Serial Killer: John Wayne Gacy I.

INTRODUCTION/BRIEF BACKGROUND

John Wayne Gacy was convicted of 33 murders of mostly teenage boys. He was sentenced to death for 12 of those murders (12 proved to have been committed after Illinois had passed post-Furman death penalty), and to natural life in prison for the others. The bodies of most of the victims were unearthed in the crawl space under Gacy's middle class home in the Chicago suburbs. Evidence showed that the defendant led a double life, engaging in charitable and political activities at the same time he was committing a series of sadistic torture murders. He enticed many young men to his home for homosexual liaisons, tying or handcuffing his partners then strangling or choking them. Gacy was a successful contractor, was active in the community, and often dressed up as a clown for parties. He has the distinction of having been convicted of more murders than anyone else in American history. He is also known as the known as the Killer Clown who raped and murdered 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978. Gacy buried 26 of his victims in the crawlspace of his home and three others elsewhere on his property, discarding the remaining four victims in a nearby river. Gacy became known as the "Killer Clown" due to his charitable services at fundraising events, parades and children's parties where he would dress as "Pogo the Clown," a character he devised himself. Yes, I will consider it that he has a psychological disorder because at that time, he have suffered from multiple personality disorder or had antisocial behaviour. They further stated that Gacys mental disorder impaired his ability to understand the magnitude of his criminal acts. In conclusion, they all found him to have been insane during the times he committed murder. For me, the behaviour result to a dysfunctional individual because when he was a child at the age of 11, he was playing on a swing set and was hit in the head with one of the swings. The accident caused a blood clot in his brain that was not discovered until he was 16. Between the time of the accident and the diagnosis, Gacy suffered from blackouts that were caused by the clot. They were finally treated with medication. At the age of 17, he was also diagnosed with a heart ailment that he was hospitalized for several times during his life. He complained frequently about it over the years but no one could ever find a cause for the pain that he claimed to be suffering. Thats why he has a mental disorder that results to a dysfunctional individual.

INTERVENTION/RECOMMENDATION The theory I have chose is the Behaviorism by John Watsons because it relates the case about the serial killer, John Wayne Gacy, based on the proposition that all things that organisms do, including acting, thinking, feeling and should be regarded as behaviors, and that psychological disorders are best treated by altering behavior patterns, it means that The basis of behavioral psychology suggests that all behaviors are learned. There are also two types of behaviourism, the classical conditioning by Ivan Pavlov, the typical procedure for inducing classical conditioning involves presentations of a neutral stimulus along with a stimulus of some significance, the "unconditional stimulus. The other one is Operant conditioning where an individual modifies the occurrence and form of its own behavior due to the association of the behavior with a stimulus, it also "operates" on the environment and is maintained by its consequences. When John Wayne Gacy was a child, his father abused his wife and berated his children; thats why he learned that behaviour from his father. At that time, the unconditioned stimulus which means the neutral stimulus could be any event that does not result in an overt behavioral response from the organism under investigation. When his father beated his children, the unconditioned stimulus respond, so I think he is depressed and feeling sad in that time. The conditioned stimulus is when he saw a women and a girls, the conditioned response when he molester and raped and sometimes, kill them, just like his father when he got drunk and abuses his wife but his father didnt kill anyone, he just berated his children, he got that behaviour from his father. I just recommend that he must abandon his illegal activities to make a new life for his children and sons. Gacy and his family must go somewhere in the peaceful place so that he can overcome his behaviour and forget about the past, because when he remember his father, the stimulus response and it will result to be his multiple personality disorder or had antisocial behaviour. The first known account of John Gacy's sadistic behavior began after his marriage to Marilynn Myers in 1964 in Iowa. He was working in management at his father-in-law's restaurant and somehow lured a young boy to the back and tried to sodomize him when he refused to perform oral sex. The boy reported Gacy to the police and he ended up doing 18 months of a 10 year prison sentence on a sexual molestation conviction. After prison, divorced and disgraced, he decided to return to his hometown Chicago and start a new life. He remarried but the marriage ended quickly, leaving Gacy alone to feed his sadistic fantasies.

Summary

The feelings that evoked in the situation are hatred to his father and lust for the womens and the teenager boys that he molester. The behaviour presented to the case was wrong because he hated his father, so he bring the grudge until he grew up and have a family. He have a mental disorder that makes him insane and sometimes, he kill people when he is in that state. I think it will not suffice because he needs a psychiatrist to check for him because his behaviour became worst than before. It makes effective because he learned that behaviour from his father when he was a child. It is a big problem because by that behaviour that he learned, he killed many people and they suffered from what Gacy has been done to them. The possible victims are the teenagers and womens because he is active in drugs, pornography and other illegal activities. We must prevent it from those who have the same experience to John Wayne Gacy, we will give them the attention and good values so that, he will learn it as he grew up and they will be a good person. Yes, I have negative feelings about the disorder of the case because, some people will imitate what have he have done before, so they need them to prevent from doing that by the guidance of their parents and taking care of them well. They must acquire the behaviour to be a good person and believe that they can do it, so that they can avoid any traumatic incidents that they will encounter in their lives. Therefore, It is thus tolerance that is the source of peace, and intolerance that is the source of disorder and squabbling.
