Chapter 2 Installing MSP 2.9 on SUSE OS

This document describes how to install the Symbol Mobility Services Platform (MSP) 2.9 Server Software on
SUSE.

NOTE This document is only an example. The actual screens that you see during your installation might vary.

Before installing MSP 2.9 on Red Hat, ensure that you install the required software packages.See the MSP
Server Software Installation Guide.

To install the MSP 2.9 Server Software on SUSE OS:

1. Download the six ISO images from download.novell.com (SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 for x86,
AMD64 and EM64T Evaluation).

2. Burn and label the six ISO images. Ensure you select ISO as your burn option.

3. Insert SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 CD1 into the target computer.

4. Boot from the CD. If you do not get the SUSE installation screen, check your BIOS boot settings.

5. Choose Installation from the Boot menu.

The disclaimer statement appears.

6. Select I agree.

7. Choose the language and click Accept.

8. Review the installation settings and select Change. Select Partitioning in the change menu.

9. Select Create Custom Partition Setup and click Next.

10. Select Custom partitioning -- for experts and click Next.

11. Select Create and choose a primary partition type for the /boot mount point.

12. Select Format > Ext3.

13. Select the size 200MB. The syntax is +200M for the End cylinder.

14. Set the mount point as /boot and click OK.

15. Select Create and choose a primary partition type for the / (root) mount point.
a. Files system format—Ext3
b. End cylinder (Size)—+16GB
c. Click OK after you finish.

16. Select Create and choose a primary partition for the Swap mount point

a. File system format—Swap.


b. End cylinder (Size)—+2GB.
c. Click OK after you finish.

17. Select Create, choose Extended Partition, and click OK.

18. Select OK in the Create an Extended Partition screen, which will encompass the remaining space on the
disk by default.

19. Select Create for the /tmp mount point (it will automatically be an extended partition)

a. File system format—Ext3


b. End cylinder (Size)—+2GB
c. Click OK after you finish.

20. Select Create for the /var/lib mount point - this should encompass the remaining disk space ~60GB

a. File system format—Ext3.


b. End cylinder (Size)—a default.
c. Click OK.

The following table shows the partition directories, sizes, types, and formats.

22. Click Next to complete paritioning.

22. After partitioning has finished, select Change and Software from the menu.

23. Select Full Installation from the Software Install menu and click Accept.

24. Click Accept again at the Installation Settings screen.

25. Select Yes, install on the green warning screen.

26. When prompted, insert SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 disks.

27. The system reboots and displays the root account screen.

28. Enter the password for the root account and click Next.

29. The network information displays. Select Change -> Network Cards to set a static IP address. By default
DHCP is used.
a. Select Change then Edit to alter the network settings.
b. Ensure that you configure the Hostname, DNS and Routing sections.

30. After the IP address settings are configured, select Next at the Network configuration screen.

31. Perform the Internet test if your computer is attached to a network; if your computer is a stand-alone
system, click the radio button: No skip this test.

32. Click Next at the Service Configuration screen.

33. Select Local (/etc/passwd) method in the User Authentication method screen and click Next.

34. Set up primary user account (for example, mspuser) and select Next.
The release notes display.

35. Read the release notes and click Next.

36. The system hardware is automatically detected if it appears correct. Click Next.

37. Click Finish.


The installation is complete.

38. SUSE reboots.

39. Log into the console as the root user.

40. Click on the green Novell icon. Select System and then click Yast.

41. Within Yast select Software in the left-pane and Install and Remove Software in the right-pane.

42. You must install the tftp software before installing MSP. In the Search field type tftp and click Search.

a. Click the box next to the tftp Package (a black check appears).
b. Click Accept in the lower right-hand corner.

43. You can now close the Yast Control Panel. The SUSE Operating is now configured for use with MSP.

44. Use FTP or a CD to copy the MSP tar file to the MSP server.

Chapter 3 Installing MSP 2.9 on RedHat OS

This document describes how to install the Symbol Mobility Services Platform (MSP) 2.9 Server Software on
the Red Hat OS.

Installing MSP 2.9 Server Software on Red Hat


1. Download the 6 ISO images from www.Red Hat.com (Red Hat LINUX Enterprise Server 4 - The original
release. Updated releases exist but were not tested with MSP)

2. Burn and label the 4 ISO images (ensure you select ISO as your burn option).

3. Insert the Red Hat LINUX Enterprise Server 4 CD1 into the target computer.

4. Boot from the CD. If you do not get the Red Hat installation screen, check your BIOS boot settings.

5. Press the Enter key for a default boot.

6. Skip the media test.

7. Choose the language and click Next.

8. Choose the appropriate keyboard layout.


After selecting the keyboard, the software checks for previous installations. If it detects any prior
installations, it prompts you to upgrade or reinstall. Select reinstall and proceed to the next step.

9. Select Manually partition with Disk Druid.

10. Select Yes to erase all data.

11. Choose New to create a new partition.


The Add Partition dialog appears.

12. Select the following in the Add Partition dialog:

a. Choose mount point: /boot:


b. File System Type: ext3
c. Size (MB): 200.
d. Leave the default selections for the rest of the options and click OK.

13. Choose New to create a new partition.

The Add Partition dialog appears. Select the following in the Add Partition dialog:
a. Choose mount point: /
b. File System Type: ext3
c. Size (MB): 16000
d. Leave the default selections for the rest of the options and click OK.

14. Choose New to create a new partition.


The Add Partition dialog appears. Select the following in the Add Partition dialog:
a. Choose mount point: <Not Applicable>
b. File System Type: swap
c. Size (MB): 2000. The swap partition size should be twice the size of the physical memory (RAM).

d. Leave the default selections for the rest of the options and click OK.

15. Choose New to create a new partition.


The Add Partition dialog appears. Select the following in the Add Partition dialog:
a. Choose mount point: /tmp
b. File System Type: ext3
c. Size (MB): 2000
d. Leave the default selections for the rest of the options and click OK.

16. Choose New to create a new partition.


The Add Partition dialog appears. Select the following in the Add Partition dialog:
a. Choose mount point: /var/lib
b. File System Type: ext3
c. Size (MB): 100. Note: This partition size should encompass the rest of the disk. In the example this
document uses, the size is 100 MB.
d. Leave the default selections for the rest of the options and click OK.

NOTE Red Hat will automatically create an extended partition to accommodate more than four partitions.

17. Click Next after the partitioning completes.

18. Accept default boot loader - Click Next. The boot loader is installed in MBR.

19. Select Edit for network configuration if you are not using DHCP.
The Edit Interface dialog appears.

20. Set the hostname, default gateway and DNS server and click OK.

21. Disable the farewell and SE Linux.

22. Select Proceed at the firewall warning.

23. Choose the appropriate language.

24. Select the Timezone.

25. Enter the password for the root account and click Next.

26. Choose Customize software packages to be installed.

27. Scroll to the bottom and select Everything and click Next.

28. Click Next.

29. Click Continue at the Required Install Media dialog.

30. Click Finish after the software installation completes.


Red Hat reboots.

31. Use FTP or a CD to copy the tar file to the MSP server.
