Many schools around the
country are starting to deal more
intensively with the issue of bul-
lying. At Seneca High School, a
program has been put together to
deal with this issue and to help
get younger students in the dis-
trict involved. L.I.V.E., Leaders in
Violence Education, was part of
the districts initiative for the
statewide Week of Respect.
I started this program five
years ago at Seneca because my
brother was being bullied at
school, Jaclyn Cerutti, history
teacher at Seneca High School,
said. I felt powerless, and it
made me nauseous to know when
he was going to school that he
was being bullied.
Cerutti created a mentor pro-
gram with the high school stu-
dents and the middle school stu-
dents for teens being bullied or
witnessing other students being
bullied.
This grew beyond my expec-
tations, Cerutti said. The kids
have been very passionate about
this.
Over the past year-and-a-half
the program has grown in its suc-
cess, and more schools and facul-
ty members have become in-
volved.
In the past year-and-a-half
this has become very successful,
Cerutti said. We have been get-
ting the middle schools to come
over to the high school to organ-
ize the workshops. There have
been some growing pains along
the way with logistics and find-
ing the right person, but now
things are starting to work out.
Among some of the activities
the program is organizing and
taking part in are wall murals in
the school and national pledges.
The program has also participat-
ed in the Redefining Beautiful
project, where teachers and stu-
dents dont wear makeup for a
week.

Two local eighth-grade stu-
dents from Southampton organ-
ized a fund raiser to raise money
for breast-cancer awareness.
This year, Kate Taylor and Ash-
ley Moore organized their sec-
ond annual Play 4 the Cure
Breast Cancer Fund raiser. The
girls hosted several games of
field hockey with teams from
Tabernacle, Shamong,
Southampton, Pemberton, Marl-
ton and Florence.
Both of the girls play field
hockey and are a part of the
U.S.A. Field Hockey Associa-
tion, Debbie Taylor, Kate Tay-
lors mother said. Through
their membership they get Field
Hockey Life magazine and they
saw in the magazine the Play 4
the Cure fund raisers.
Last year, the girls decided
that they wanted to host their
own Play 4 the Cure and organ-
ized it all in a month.
They made and passed out
fliers, Taylor said. They asked
teachers, friends and family for
donations and let the other
teams know, so that they could
get people to participate.
At the event the girls sold cup-
cakes, sweaters, T-shirts, bags
and several other items to raise
money for their cause. They also
went to the soccer field next to
the field and collected money
there.
The games were broken up
over two days: eight games were
played each day.
They had a junior division
that had the third-, fourth- and
fifth-graders and they played on
Saturday, Taylor said. The sen-
ior division made up of sixth,
seventh and eighth graders
played on Sunday. They turned a
home weekend game into a
fundraiser.

school that have four different
P.S.A. topics on them, Cerutti
said. We deal with things such
as dating violence, violence
against yourself, self-esteem is-
sues and use popular television
shows as examples. We also put
up pictures of teachers and their
kids and have things like would
you bully me or when Im bully-
ing someone, Im bullying some-
one elses child. We are also
doing Megans Pledge, which is a
national pledge for Megan Meier
and more than 600 students have
done the Anderson Cooper
pledge.
One of the main parts of the
initiative is the mentoring pro-
gram. The high school students
take part in mentoring middle
school students, to start instilling
anti-bullying and other issues in
them earlier than high school.
This has been a blessing in a
way and very exciting, Cerutti
said. It has been frustrating be-
cause, for five years, Ive been
saying this. But I appreciate it,
and Im excited for the kids. Some
of them have graduated without
seeing the mentor program take
off. They will get to see their hard
work come to fruition.

Seneca aims to end bullying
The goal the girls wanted to
reach last year was $500 and they
ended up raising $2,500.
It blew their minds when
they ended up raising that
much, Taylor said. They were
counting the money and they
couldnt believe it.
Taylor and Moore will move
on to high school next year and
this is something that they
would like to continue.
They told the rec coaches that
they would come back every year
and help organize this, Taylor
said. Seneca High School does
participate in a Play 4 the Cure
event, but the girls want to keep
organizing this for rec.
This year the girls raised just
under $1,900 and still have
money coming in slowly. They
will continue to collect donations
until the end of the month.
If you would like to donate you
can contact Debbie Taylor at 304-

Concerned that a disaster-as-
sistance program should get to
the families and individuals who
need it most and are entitled,
Burlington County Freeholders
have adopted a resolution calling
on the president and his adminis-
tration to provide county officials
with the tools they need to root
out fraudulent claims.
Known as D-SNAP, an acronym
for Disaster Supplemental Nutri-
tion Assistance, the program is
intended to provide groceries to
those who suffered property dam-
age from Hurricane Irene. The
program drew 3,193 applications
through the Burlington County
Board of Social Services, which
discerned that roughly half of
them were suspect, if not fraudu-
lent.
However, social services does
not have the authority under D-
SNAP to investigate and validate
the applications.
I was astounded to learn we
were not even allowed to investi-
gate these seemingly fraudulent
claims, Freeholder Chris Brown
said. This is the folks in Wash-
ington, the Obama Administra-
tion, failing to provide oversight
for federal tax dollars.
The freeholder resolution,
sponsored by Brown, calls on the
president to institute regulatory
safeguards to protect against
fraudulent claims, including re-
quiring application to provide ev-
idence of actual damage and loss
attributable to Hurricane Irene.
The most recent calculations
by Social Services indicate more
than $1.3 million in D-SNAP
funds have been expended in
Burlington County alone.
Brown noted that other coun-
ties have incurred similar issues
with the program.
While most of the applications
have already been processed pur-
suant to federal mandate, Brown
said the federal government still
needs to investigate the program
for fraud.
Copies of his resolution, which
was adopted unanimously, will be
forwarded to the president and
members of the Congressional
delegation representing Burling-
ton County.
There have been families that
have been genuinely crippled by
the storm, and the integrity of
the program has to be somehow
addressed to ensure that these are
the people getting the assistance,
Brown said.

County cracking down on
fraudulent disaster-aid claims
The countys plan to generate
cost savings by running two
county schools under one ad-
ministration has moved another
step forward, with freeholders
appointing yet another individ-
ual to serve on school boards for
both the Burlington County Spe-
cial Services School and the
Burlington County Institute of
Technology.
At the same time, freeholders
noted that the schools gover-
nance, which have had been con-
solidated under one superin-
tendent, Dr. Donald P. Lucas, are
already initiating shared servic-
es initiatives involving technolo-
gy, transportation and food serv-
ices.
The end game is to imple-
ment administrative efficiencies
that can save tax dollars, Free-
holder Chris Brown said. Dr.
Lucas and other administrative
staff, not to mention the board
members of both schools, de-
serve a lot of credit for embrac-
ing this concept. Both schools do
an outstanding job and their in-
dividual missions remain total-
ly intact. Time will show that we
can continue to deliver a quality
education and achieve a lower
per pupil cost.

6 THE TABERNACLE SUN OCTOBER 26-NOVEMBER 1, 2011
T
he Nov. 8 elections are almost
upon us. That means its time
to take a final look at the candi-
dates and issues on the ballot.
Its a busy year for elections with all
of the seats in the Legislature up for
grabs and a number of hotly contested
local races.
Its also a time when the national po-
litical scene is beginning to stir. Re-
publican presidential hopefuls have
been holding a series of debates as a
clear front-runner has yet to emerge.
Believe it or not, the first primaries
and caucuses are only a few months
away.
But, when it comes down to impact-
ing your daily life, your local officials
have a lot more influence than those in
Washington, D.C., which is why it is
important to get informed and then
show up on Election Day to cast your
vote.
At The Sun, we want to remind you
that this is the last week that election-
related letters will appear in print.
From this point forward, they will be
published online, so please visit your
local Sun website to read them.
We are doing this to allow the candi-
dates and their supporters an opportu-
nity to respond to any last-minute is-
sues that might arise. Next weeks edi-
tion is the last before the election,
which would not allow anyone a
chance to respond in the same format
to anything that appeared in print. We
will continue to publish reminders
that individuals interested in submit-
ting and reading letters to the editor
regarding the election should visit
their local website.
In the meantime, dont let Election
Day sneak up on you and find you un-
prepared. There are ample ways to
find out all you need to know about the
issues at hand. Get informed and then
vote.

Over 25 years of automotive service and repair experience

filling a seat left open with the
resignation of Anne Marie Em-
mons, of Pemberton, who is re-
locating out of state.
Freeholders previously ap-
pointed Robert C. Silcox of
Mount Holly, a member of the
special services board, to also sit
on the five-member BCIT Board.
Silcox filled a seat vacated by
Harry Adams of Westampton.
By cross-pollinating the
membership of the school
boards we are ensuring that
everyone is familiar with each
districts operation, mission and
programs, Brown said. Both
boards are better able to identify
shared services possibilities.
According to Lucas, the com-
bined administration already
has resulted in the preliminary
sharing of transportation, creat-
ing time and dollar savings by
putting school bussing under
one operation and by consolidat-
ing routes.
Both schools now also share
the same outside vendor for food
services and BCIT has been able
to expand its use of the Educa-
tional Services Unit at Special
Services to hire special educa-
tion teacher assistants, when ap-
plicable.
The BCIT Technology Depart-
ment has been restructured and
a shared-services agreement has
been approved by both boards of
education.
It is too early in the process
to quantify actual dollar sav-
ings, Lucas said. Were still in
the early stages, but we have
good cooperation between the
schools and were making
progress.
He said shared services op-
portunities also will be investi-
gated and sought in other areas,
including custodial and mainte-
nance, purchasing and service
contracts.

I am pleased to offer couples
an opportunity to exchange vows
on a once in a life time date of
11/11/11 at a beautiful location in
a community full of history,
Tyler said. I am grateful for the
cooperation of the governing
body of Burlington City and the

Lyceum Hall for the Arts, to make
this possible.
Built in 1839 as a public hall for
lectures, theatre productions and
cultural programs, the Lyceum
was the home of the municipal
government for 140 years.
It was restored to its original
splendor and offers a unique
backdrop to share a remarkable
day.
Couples interested in schedul-
ing their ceremony will need to
obtain a marriage license from
the town in which either of the
parties resides.
It takes 72 hours to obtain the
license, so please plan according-
ly. Interested couples should con-
tact the office to reserve a time
slot at 265-5122 as a limited num-
