T document has been created by the Kings, Queens and King's Hands of Hollow W his orld.

Welcome to Port Silver, the glorious capital of Altera. I am Fastidious Quinn, an advisor of sorts employed to greet newcomers to our city and send them along the right path. My gift to you is this tome, I suggest you browse it and allow the knowledge within to guide you through the first few days in your new homeland. I've scribbled some notes on it to help you but make sure you know the King's Law by heart, things can get ugly around here if you don't, just look at this bruise! Seeing you're new I'd advise you to speak to some of our local Mayors, they're a mixed bunch but mostly good at heart and will be happy to offer you residency in their towns. Choose wisely though, each town has it's own rules and some are more strict than others about what style of house you can build yourself. Oh and go for a wander around Port Silver and meet some locals, you might want to visit the mine too, you'll be surprised how nice it is, but be careful down there as it's easy to get very lost. Now it's getting late and I've got a date with a pint glass, I'll be at the tavern if you need me, just give me a kick if I'm asleep. Now you have yourself a good evening!

Chapter 1 - An introduction to Altera

1.1 The history of Altera

King's Hand Fitz is the only one who remembers this, he must be old and maybe a tad senile but don't ell him I said that.
This is a work I progress and below is simply the beginning, the story is developing and you can have your own character added to it should you wish. To read more simply visit this link. A note on the time line. PC means "Post Creation" so PC zero is the year Altera was created. In PC 45 the trouble started. PC 55 is the year the Great War started. The Armies of Naught were defeated in PC 167. It is now PC 211

PC 190
"Sit child, I would have words with you." The blind crone rasped from between broken teeth. The young boy beamed at this, "Grandma, will you tell me a story?" She was not his true grandmother, but that is what everyone in the village called her. That or "Witch" depending on if they thought she could hear them. She had been around as long as anyone could remember and had been a shrivelled old woman longer. Though few liked her, many respected her wisdom and some feared her supposed power. "Boy I will tell you The Story." "The one of when King Steel killed the creeper with nothing but his bare hands while Old King Cherbert fought off a dozen skeletons so they could seal the castle gates?!?" The boy loved the stories of violence and warfare. Simply because he knew only peace and his innocent mind thought such things glorious. "No Child, the story of how The Kings came to fight side by side." "Grandma, do you even know my name? It's Fitz. Not Child, not Boy. Fitz, I'm Gareth's son." "Do you know my name Boy? I didn't think so. So I'll call you Boy and you can call me Grandma. That way it will hurt less when you're gone." The boy didn't understand her meaning but sat down anyway. "Now long before any person can remember there was nothin'. Nothin' but Notch and His Creators and The Destroyers, or Corruptors dependin' on who's telling the tale. Good and evil some may say, but names are just wind in the end." "Well one day the Creators made their greatest creation. Us... the Crafters. And they put us on a hundred hundred worlds that they had made to see what we could do. We were like them in every way but power. We possessed the urge, nay the passion for building. Making something of nothing. Continued here..

Chapter 1 - An introduction to Altera

1.2 The peasants, nobility and the Crown
Ranks in Altera are primarily a method of controlling access to mods, admin options and finance, they are not a rudimentary scale of a persons value to the server. They can of course be used in role-play, which is one of the benefits of the titles used. Kings and Queens The Crown. These are the admins of Hollow World. They lay down the structure of the server, decide the rules and laws the server will have and test plug ins and mods. They have access to all commands including WorldEdit, Voxel Sniper and server restart commands. King's Hand Moderators of the server. They are second only to the Crown, they will take action against anyone caught or suspected of wrongdoing, they have access to fly mod and can kick and ban players. Donator ranks Knight, Lord and Patron. These ranks have additional benefits to normal villager ranks, and are granted by the Crown for donating to the running costs of Hollow World. Full benefits for donations are detailed here. Noble Regular player rank, trusted members of the community with the same permissions as Villager. Villager New player rank, you will have this rank until you have become established on the server and the admin team promote you. Builder A temporary title bestowed upon players by the Crown to aid in building Royal Commissions, grants access to flymod. Rolemaster This is the only rank in Hollow World that doesn't carry an in-game rank, a Rolemaster can be any rank from peasant to Queen and in addition to any normal duties they have they'll also be on hand to help keep the level of roleplay on Altera to a high standard. If a Rolemaster offers you advice on your roleplay style please pay attention, only Kings and Queens can over-rule the judgement of a Rolemaster when it comes to RP.

Chapter 1 - An introduction to Altera

1.3 An introduction to Altera - The Altera economy

Citizens earn Radiants, the official currency of Altera by mining, building, defending the realm against monsters and trading with other players via shops or face to face bartering. Radiants can be used to found a town, for paying your rent, buying services, trading for goods or even paying fines should you be caught doing something illegal. The main marketplace is in Port Silver and the black market located at Skaggie Rock, between these two locations you're every need should be met and if not, you can always visit the various (market) towns around Altera for all your trading needs and use the trade channel to barter. Once you become Noble you can set up shops. You can do this at Skaggie Rock where everything is free, or in any of the Towns Market. Be aware of any rules the particular town has for setting up a shop, they might even tax you !

Don't cosy up to the first Mayor who offers you a bed for the night, keep your options open or you might not live to regret it..

Chapter 2 - Socialising, role-play and chat rules

2.1 Chat rules
Server chat is governed by the chat rules (see below), however role-play is meant to be as free and open as possible and the server will shortly be adding a quest mod to allow players to quest solo or in groups and will include both chain and repeatable quests. Likewise we will also be adding a dungeon mod, to allow for solo and group dungeons with re-spawning loot and rewards to be had. Planned events will generally be announced well in advance on the forums, which is why it's a good idea to check it regularly. However spontaneous events do occur either with or without the admin team helping. Players can initiate role-play whenever they want and are encouraged to RP the majority of the time, rather than doing so only during RP events. As such most of the chat channels are RP only (see below). You are most likely to bump into your fellow players at Port Silver marketplace, Skaggie Rock or one of the towns, but if you do find someone out in the wilderness, feel free to say hello they might be out for a bit of adventuring and want some company.

Chat rules

Break these rules and King Steelcryo will be all over you like this rash I have behind my knee, looks and smells like cheese!
The three most basic rules of chat are these: 1. 2. 3. Never use capital letters, this is considered shouting and is extremely rude. Never post out of character messages in any channel other than OOC. Do not swear, harass or abuse other citizens.

There are four chat channels open to all players. Players can switch between these channels with the following commands:
Channel name /switch command Help /ch [channel] /tc Purpose

Changes the default channel to the one specified. Channels available are: RP, OOC, Trade. This is the town channel where you can speak to your fellow town residents regardless of where they are on the server, this is considered to be a roleplay channel unless the town mayor says otherwise. Sends a private message to a player. i.e. /msg Steelcryo Hello good sir, may I visit your house?

Private message /msg [recipient] /t [recipient] /tell [recipient]

Chapter 2 - Socialising, role-play and chat rules

2.2 Role play advice
This section is based upon existing rules created by our Rolemasters: Fitz, Rosharas, MeganPerk, AlphaDragonman1 Please see the roleplay section of the forum for more information. Role play is actively encouraged on Hollow World, after all it is an RP server, in order to help create an environment conducive to role play please bare this advice in mind when playing. 1. Whenever possible speak in character and avoid discussing real-life situations unless with /msg or on the /ooc channel. Ideally we'd like real-life chat kept to a minimum. Use /rp for people around you and keep cross server chat on /ooc to a minimum. 2. When engaged in role play or when others are role-playing around you please don't use the teleport options (/town spawn) or fly mod. There's a lot to see on Hollow World and you'll miss it if you don't travel home by foot now and then. 3. Engage with trade. Need some wood in a hurry? Ask on the trade channel and RP the deal face to face. 4. Adapt your RP to suit the environment, changes in weather, day/night and mob spawns can add to dynamic of a conversation greatly. 5. Long non-RP discussions and requests for mods should be kept to the forums or by using the /modreq command in game. Please keep these out of traditional chat channels. 6. Keep buildings suitable to the time period of Hollow World, they must be structurally sound, no floating towers etc without express permission from a King/Queen for RP purposes. If you really want to build one apply for permission but remember you'll have to back it up with a good story! 7. Keep things cordial, RP disputes by all means but keep it polite between players. A dispute over land, over money or a mine can be great RP but don't let it get personal. 8. Spawn is a command, it is not the name of Port Silver. Do not refer to /spawn as spawn, it's called Port Silver! 9. Use the ranks given, If you are speaking to Lady, address her as befits her rank unless she requests otherwise. Don't assume familiarity with strangers your character has never met.

Ignoring a Rolemaster can be a painful experience, don't say I didn't warn ya! If one stops to advise you on something, pay attention they are trying to help!

Chapter 3 - The King's Law

3.1 The edict of the Crown

The Great King Tinblue has spoken! Heed his words or pay the consequence. He isn't known for giving many chances to those who cross him. Remember Ignorance is not an excuse!
This edict by the Crown is aim at protecting players from abuse, ensure an in-game atmosphere conducive to role-play and also makes it clear what is and what is not acceptable in game as well as the punishments for disobeying the King's Law. All citizens are required to regularly check this law, to ensure no rules are broken. Ignorance is not an excuse and breaking the King's Law can lead to a permanent ban from the server. 1. No caps, No Spam, No Cursing, No Txt spk. Please do not use all caps to express any emotion on the Server. At the very least, continued use of caps will get you Muted. Continued abuse of the chat function may result in a ban. If an Admin has to keep reminding people of the No Caps, No Spam, and No Cursing rules, Mutes and Kicks will be administered as the team sees fit. Remember, we are a Mature Server. 2. There is to be no sharing of other server IP's in the Chat. If you wish to Private Message others, that's fine. Abuse of the /msg function to spam other server IP's will result in a Ban. If you feel someone is spamming, please inform a member of the Admin team. 3. Requests for Time and Weather Changes, Mob Status, and Items from the Admin team will be ignored. There will be times that these things are adjusted, but please, do not constantly ask. It is annoying to the team to have to answer these questions every five minutes. 4. Teleport Requests will be ignored. Teleport at the time of Posting has been disabled. This said, keep in mind your location in relation to others. Exceptions may be made in emergencies. 5. Do remember that we are a Medieval/Fantasy server. This means there is to be no Pixel Art (aside from the scarce few Tapestries in Castles) on the server. Modern structures may be demolished by that Admin team without warning. Any Pixel art will be burned on sight (again, unless it's within a castle as a tapestry or carpet) 6. There is to be no constant requests made in the public chat of "Would you like to see (insert place of interest here)". If you would like to show off your work, you can post screen caps in the Showcase Forum. That is, what it's there for after all. 7. Constant requests to the Admin Team (Kings, Queens, and Hands) should be kept to a minimum. Their attention is often focused on the Smooth Running of the server, so unless it is very urgent (i.e. Griefing Issue in progress) All issues should be made in the Support Section of the Forums or by using the /modreq command in game if it's urgent. 8. All new builds must be at least 200 blocks from any other build, unless given permission to build closer by the existing builds owner. Whilst this Towny enforces its own restrictions there are instances where player logic is required. If in doubt, ask the owner of the town! 9. When you chop down a tree, please do not leave behind the tops. We understand that some of the larger trees are hard to eliminate, but there's always a way. Leaving behind the tops makes the area ugly, and we don't like Ugly.

10. Single Block dirt/cobble/sand/wood towers are a big no-no. These can be used temporarily to access the tops of those large trees, or while you are building, but we ask that you remove them as soon as you are finished. Any member of the Crown locating a left behind single stack of Cobble, Wood, Sand, or Dirt will find themselves in trouble. Clean up after yourselves, please! 11. All settlements need to be done via Towny in order to be considered official. You must first obtain Noble Rank before you can implement Towny on your settlement. All 'Wilderness Builds' require planning permission and approval by the King. Failure to comply with this law will result in your settlement lacking Towny Protection. More information on Towny can be found here. 12. Clientside Fly Mods are allowed for building purposes only by Donators or Above. No zooming across the world at high speed or flying from place to place. Anyone caught abusing this privilege will be banned. Whilst this may seem harsh it is a rule that we will enforce and repeat abuse of flymod may result in a permanent ban or loss of your ability to use it. 13. No recruiting on the in-game chat for players to join your clan, guild, village, town, city or any other organization. We have forums for such recruitment each with their own rules and regulations. You may only mention your town if a player specifically asks for a town to join in game! 14. No subway / cart rails to be constructed outside your town/city perimeter. All rail networks in the wilderness are controlled by the Kings. 15. Mob Grinders are not allowed. 16. Cobblestone generators whether they be natural or powered by Redstone or Pistons are not allowed. Neither are automated Redstone or Piston constructions that are likely to put strain on our server. All complex redstone circuits should be shown to an admin before being fully constructed. 17. Above ground buildings made primarily from cobblestone are discouraged. There are exceptions for castles or deliberately old looking buildings. Dirt buildings are not allowed and will be removed without notice unless approved by an admin under specific circumstances! 18. Building Construction using Wool as supports or Roofing are frowned upon. Wool should only be used for 'carpets' or 'tapestries'. You may use brown and black wool in your builds as walls as long as they look medieval and fit the theme of the server and town. Solid wool builds are still not allowed! 19. Gravel paths are not allowed, they look and sound ugly. We don't care how they look on your texture pack or how logical it seems, just don't do it. They will be removed without notice! 20. X-Ray texture packs or any modification of Minecraft is not permitted if it gives you an advantage over another player, mini-map mods are permitted as long as they only show above ground detail. Breaking this rule will lead to a permanent ban from the server.

Chapter 3 - The King's Law

3.2 Crime and Punishment
So, you think banning is the only thing we do to those who break the rules? Afraid not! Be sure to read up on this section, as with the other rules, it will be added to on a frequent basis. Hollow World runs a three strike programme, upon the third ban it will be permanent. If you cannot adhere to the King's Law, Hollow World is not the place for you.

Theft
Punishment: Sent to jail, minimum of 4 hours. Earns Thief title and is stripped of citizenship for at least 24 hours, during this period crimes cannot be committed against them, so they can be freely killed by other players. Detail: First of all, you will be jailed. The length of Jail time will not be less than four hours. Upon their release, the thief will gain the title of Thief, which will remain for a minimum of twenty four hours. Once PvP has been engaged, other Players are allowed to kill the Thief while they hold the Thief rank, without punishment. A thief can bail themselves out for 1000 Radiants plus the value of what they stole. Any other player may bail the thief for 3000 Radiants plus the value of what the Thief stole. A second offence will result in a Ban. This includes stealing from players in your town and also applies to town Mayors.

Griefing
Punishment: Instant ban. Detail: Instant Ban. It may be appealed in the Ban Appeal Section on the Forums.

Murder and unauthorised PvP

Punishment: Ban. Detail: PVP is now controlled by Towny. It is up to each town Mayor to choose whether pvp is turned on or not. Turning pvp on in your town is not an excuse to murder players who enter. If you wish to engage in pvp other players must be warned first.

This is just a sample of the punishments the Kings and Queens will hand out, but watch out of the King's Hands too, they're a tough bunch and won't think twice about clipping you 'round the ear if they suspect you're up to something dodgy.

Chapter 4 - The Artisan's code of conduct

king Lars is wise, brave, clever and handsome. He paid me to write this, or rather he told me he's dress me up as a pig and march me down King's Road if I didn't. Anyway this is his code of conduct, don't bloody ignore it!
Hollow World is a Medieval/Fantasy RP server. We encourage people to show off their creativity and building skills, but we also encourage people to build for a reason. We want people to think of why they making their builds, think of a back story. When a new player comes to visit your town we don't want them to just walk into a square cobblestone castle without a story. We want them to be in awe of your building style (whatever that may be) and to be fascinated by the stories surrounding your castle. Buildings on our server are meant to be in medieval/fantasy style. Roughly speaking, the middle ages are a rather long period from 500 to 1500. Think of what, how and why people would build in these times. This means you don't make a 5 story apartment flat out of wood and cobble and call it 'medieval'. Look through some pictures to get some inspiration, type on google what you want to build and look for examples. Builds can crossover into what is considered the 'early modern' period, there were for examples a lot of palaces built in this period. These would be perfectly fine on our server. We do however run the fantasy twist on this server. This means you can bring in fantasy elements into your builds, just as long as they stick to a medieval 'feel'. Think of Lords of the Rings, Games of Thrones, The Elder Scrolls etc. . Don't think of World of Warcraft. On our server things have to be more realistic. This means no floating island powered by a single magic obsidian block. This means you can make an elven forest, dwarven mine or hobbit village. But not an obsidian floating evil wizards tower of doom. I think you get the point. If you are in doubt feel free to ask any of the staff to verify your building plans. In order maintain a real RP feeling to our server and to keep the areas between builds clean and avoid deserted buildings everywhere, we have disabled to ability to build in the wilderness. But don't fret ! All your building needs will be met, you just need to take a second to learn how this works. First of all not building in the wild does not mean you can no longer mine ores or chop trees. You still can ! We are only disabling the placement of most blocks. Dirt, sand and gravel can still be placed if you need to plug a leak or cover up your mine. Dirt is there to fill up holes you created and not for houses. Clean up after yourself. You can still go out and gather up your resources and you can still place torches, chests etc. Mining operations are not hampered by this. The first thing you need to do when you come on our server is find a place to live. Living in the slums of Port Silver is fun and all, but we all need a place of our own. For most people, especially when they start, it is best to look for an established town to join. Look at the list of towns in Altera Census and see if you can find one that fits your taste, and your RP character. For more information on Towny please refer to sections 5.3 and 5.4 of this tome.

If however you feel up to the task and wish to find a place out there in the wild and start up your town you can do that. You will need to gather up your friends and pool together 50,000 Radiants to start up your town. Also you will need be of Noble rank or higher. You can become a Noble by donating 5 pounds, or by purchasing it off a King for 50,000 Radiants. Most important of all, think of what you are building. Try to find a spot that would really fit well into what you have in mind. Try to think of a back story to your town and think of an artstyle your town is going to be built in. Make sure the residents in your town follow your style and plan out what your town is going to look like. Just because Towny follows a grid pattern doesn't mean your town needs to be square. Be creative about your builds and soon enough more people will flock to your town ! Be sure to read up on the Towny guide in section 5.3 and 5.4 first. For respected builders we can allow special permission to build projects outside their towns. These would either be work commissioned by a member of the crown, or a project started up by one or several individuals themselves. Players that feel like they can contribute to the server by building something beautiful, something that adds RP potential or something that would just generally be a good addition to our world and server, can apply for special permission for this. Please check the relevant subforum for this.

Chapter 5 - Otherworldly advice

5.1 Hollow World Forum Rules

The people love Queen Squee but for the sake of your well-being don't argue with her, you won't gain anything from it. You ignore her at your peril.
The forum is an essential part of the Hollow World community, allowing everyone to discuss anything happening on and off the server. You are encouraged to take part in the forum, but there are a few sensible rules that apply. As with the King's Law, ignorance is not an excuse. 1. Though we are a Mature Server, we ask that all content of the pages is kept to a PG-13 level. This means no profanity, and a distinct lack of Chat/txt Speak. 2. Place your threads in the appropriate forums. Threads placed in the wrong forum, will be periodically Locked and/or Deleted. The forums are pretty self explanatory. If you have questions, feel free to ask them in the FAQ located here. 3. If you have a private server, and wish to invite others, who are we to stop you? However, please keep it in private so you do not disrupt the flow of play on our Server. You can use the /msg command in game, or the Private Conversations on the forums. Do not spam this option, or else you may earn yourself a ban. 4. All links on the forum should adhere to the Basic Minecraft Forum rules. This means that there is to be no posting of Torrent Links, and no links to JAR files for Minecraft. These are illegal. 5. Do not spam in the forums, and please do not post all in caps. Whenever possible, use proper grammar and punctuation. 6. Do not contact an admin in an attempt to have your application for whitelist rushed through, any attempt to do so will result in the application being refused. Applications are processed regularly, if it's taking longer than normal we'll inform you of this delay. 7. Do you see a Thread that's out of place on the Forums? Feel free to "Report" it, and bring it to the attention of the Admin team. However, users who abuse this function, Reporting every thread they find, may earn themselves a temporary ban. 8. The Whitelist Application Forum is for Whitelist Applications only. Idle chatter on any application will not be tolerated. If you wish to chat with a user, feel free to use the Private Conversation function on the forums, or start a thread in the General Discussion area. Posts from non Admin Team members in a Whitelist Application will be deleted. The only conversation on a Whitelist Application should be between the Applicant and the Admin Team. 9. When submitting a Whitelist Application, we understand your eagerness to join the server, however, please do not Message any member of the Admin Team about your application. 10. Trolling on the Forums will not be tolerated. Anyone found guilty of trolling will first receive a warning. Further Trolling will result in an IP Ban on the server. We do not tolerate it on the server, nor will we tolerate it on our forums. This includes sending abuse or spam to admins if a whitelist application is declined. You will ruin any chances of reapplying and will be permanently banned.

Chapter 5 - Otherworldly advice

5.2 Chest shops
Only Nobles, Knights and Patrons can setup chests shops. How to create a ChestShop? - Place a chest, if you haven't already. - Place a sign 1 block near the chest (for example, above the chest) - On the sign, write:

(Item name can actually be item ID or alias) First line will be filled in by the plugin automatically. Price is a combination of buy and sell price. You have to have B near buy price (people buy from you), and S near sell price (people sell to you). If you have both B and S, separate them with a An example of a correct sign colon. The sign above indicates that AcrobotPL wants to sell 64 diamonds for 10 Radiants, and buy them back from you for 5 currency. Remember when setting prices that it's flipped, you mark the selling price with B and the buying price with S. People BUY from you and you SELL to them. To buy from a chest shop you right click on the sign, to sell to a shop you left click on a sign. Be careful not to repeatedly click, it could cost you a lot of money! The amount you put in is the amount of the selected item you sell per click, for the specified price. You can see item names and item ids here: http://minecraft-ids.grahamedgecombe.com/ Remember that if there are multiple items with the same item number you have to use the damage counter to differentiate between them. i.e. [Roopot] Player name 12 Item quantity 10 Item price per quantity 18:2 Item ID and damage counter (after the colon). Would mean that Roopot wanted to sell a stack of 12 Birchwood leaves for 10 Radiants each If in doubt please see the Youtube link below created by our very own Fr3aKeD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZL4BESjORA

Chapter 5 - Otherworldly advice

5.3 Building and Towny

Towny is great and all, but I can't help thinking there's too many castles and not enough breweries. I mean you can't have enough breweries eh?
The Altera Census can be found here

Hollow World is a medieval and fantasy role-play Minecraft server where players are encouraged to build with purpose, whilst interacting with others in a suitably medieval setting. All builds should fit with the medieval theme of Hollow World, although this doesn't mean that fantasy builds are forbidden they simply have to fit with the age and style of Altera. Hollow World uses the Towny Mod, this mod allows for the founding of settlements around Altera and gives the Mayor of these towns and it's residents additional options as the plots become their property and only they can alter them (anti-griefing). Towny also adds to the Altera economy by means of taxation, with each Major collecting taxes for residents should they wish, and in turn capital cities taxing each member town of their respective nation. Towns can expand, purchase outposts in other towns and cities and even declare war on each other. Towny doesn't restrict building, it simply controls it and allows for a more secure, grief-free life on Altera. Citizens are not forced to join a town, just as towns are not forced to join nations, however there are benefits to both on Hollow World, chief amongst these being added interaction and greater role-play possibilities. Any citizen with enough wealth and of suitable rank can found a town or a nation, however doing so is a serious undertaking and shouldn't be done on impulse alone. Look a the existing towns, speak to the Mayors and see if you can join one of them before starting a new settlement. On Altera living with friends is always more fun than living alone. In the Wilderness (non-town areas) it's impossible to build without using basic materials such as dirt, gravel, sand and logs. These are to build temporary shelters and should be pulled down in the morning, they can also be used to plug holes etc. This way Towny doesn't restrict mining, but does keep the wilderness exactly that wild. The Altera Census is the best starting place to look for a new home, details of all the major settlements on Altera are here as well as information on the Major, the settlement size, it's theme and how to apply for residency. Towny isn't the only way to build in the Altera landscape, non-town related build application can be sought from the Crown by submitting a planning application detailing your build and explaining how the addition would enhance the myriad of role-play options already on Altera. Lastly the Crown will on occasion commission the best, most talented builders to construct a building or monument of their choosing or hold quests to find the best design for a specific building the winner receiving a splendid prize. In short Towny grants control of the landscape, minimising griefing and giving players proper ownership and control of the land they've purchased. See it as a friend, not a foe and it'll work wonders for you and your community.

When a mayor goes out into the world to start a town, he can claim one of the plots as his own. The 16*16 plot the mayor is currently standing in then becomes the central town block. The start of a new town. When the mayor decides to extend his town, he can claim town plots adjacent to this central plot. The plots claimed can be sold out to residents of the town. Towns currently do not pay an upkeep please note this may change in the near future. 5.5 Towny Mayor's guide I'll tell ye a guide take all my money and give me nothing but stick in return
Becoming a Mayor is a big decision, you will be responsible for a group of people and they will look to you for leadership. It is your responsibility to become familiar with the Towny mod and to detail a plan for expansion for your town. You can have people helping you, but in the end it is all up to you. Towns cost a lot of money. If you don't have enough money in your town's bank to pay the daily upkeep, you lose your town and through this a lot of money. Think about what you are doing when creating a town, be smart about it. Plots As a mayor you need to understand how the Towny pattern works. Towny divides the world in 16*16 plots, going all the way from bedrock to sky. These plots were set when Towny was first installed, overlapping directly with world chunks. You have to follow this pattern when creating your town, because you expand your town plot by plot.

This is what one plot looks like. The stone depicts the edge of the plot, not the border. This means the stone is inside the plot, on the edge. The stone is still a part of the plot. As you can see connecting plots have a double border of stone. As I mentioned before, the stone depicts the edge of the plot, not the border. Plots don't have a single block border running between them, they are directly adjacent to each other. This is important to keep in mind, so you don't lose track of the grid within your town.

This is what a grid looks like. Click to enlarge. As you can see connecting plots have a double border of stone. As I mentioned before, the stone depicts the edge of the plot, not the border. Plots don't have a single block border running between them, they are directly adjacent to each other. This is important to keep in mind, so you don't lose track of the grid within your town.

Let's make our town, assuming you've have at least 50,000 Radiants to spare! Stand anywhere you want to start your town and type: Page 16 of 29

/town new [name] i.e. /town new Fastidious_Quinn The plot you are currently standing in becomes the home plot of your town. This doesn't mean that a 16*16 area around you becomes yours, this means the 16*16 plot you are standing in becomes yours, no matter where you stand, even if it is right at the edge. The grid pattern has already been laid out by Towny over the entire map, you just claim one plot from this existing grid.

Now that we claimed our home plot, it is time to plan out the edges. This is done quite easily by walking out of your plot. Keep walking until you hit the edge, where it will say ~wilderness. This means you have entered the wilderness and you are now outside of your town. Walk back slowly until it says you are back in your town. Try to walk in and out of your town to find the exact edge of our town plot. Put down a block at the edge of your town, not in the wilderness. Do this on all sides and then connect the blocks together to make a square 16*16 plot. Now that we have our home plot planned out we should check out our town status. You can do this by typing: /town This will show you information about the town. Notice how it says Town Size 1/4. You are allowed 4 town plots per resident. A smart mayor sells 1-2 town plots to a player, and uses the rest for public buildings. We currently have only 1 town plot, our home plot. Let's start expanding! First we need to put money into the town bank before we can start claiming plots. Claiming a plot will cost you 10,000 Radiants once you've used up your free allocation of 2 per resident. To claim a plot, simply walk into a plot adjacent to one of your existing plots (in this case the home plot) and type: /town claim Please note this will cost 10,000 Radiants and is taken from the town bank account, not yours!

ten thoosan!!! bloody rip off that is. I'm telling ya I could invest that for you instead, I know this guy in Dustwood called Horace who does a good deal on sandstone.

You can place down the grid the same way as before. If you do it right you should end up with a double border as shown in the picture. Notice how the new plot is aligned with your home plot. The entire world is planned out like this. All of your future expansions will take place in this manner, plot by plot. This doesn't mean you have to fill every plot with a square building, you are free to do what you want, as long as it's within the medieval theme of Altera.

Now that you have claimed a plot, you can look at the Towny map by typing /Towny map. It will show you where you home plot is, what plot you are currently standing in, your claimed plots and even the direction you are currently facing. You can leave the map on by typing /resident set mode map. However be aware that this will spam your chat every time you walk to a new plot. You can turn it off with: /resident set mode reset. Now let's talk about adding residents to your town. You can simply add a resident by typing: /resident add [name] i.e. /resident add Lars For every resident in your town, you will have to pay 100 Radiants upkeep to the server. Every resident will give your town the ability to expand 8 plots. To manage your town there are 2 options you can choose from. You could distribute your plots amongst residents. These plots then become their private plots. This way only that particular resident can build on it, and the owner of that plot can personally change the setting for his plot. This does mean you use the Towny grid pattern to lay out your town and residents are restricted to their own private plots to build on. You could also choose to not sell private plots. You do this simply by claiming town plots as a mayor, and then leaving them public. Outsiders still cannot build or destroy inside, but all of your residents can build anywhere they want. You then assign areas that your residents can build on. This allows for more freedom and creativity in your town and of course cooperation.

To distribute private plots in your town you can set individual plots up for sale. Residents can then claim a plot in your town where only they can build. You can set a plot up for sale by typing: /plot forsale You can set the price of a plot (the price residents pay when they claim the plot) by typing: /town set plotprice [amount] A resident can claim a plot by typing: /plot claim You can also add an assistant (co-mayor). This person will has access to all the commands a mayor has. /town assistant add [name] Taxes In order to pay for town upkeep and town expansion, a mayor can set up taxes. There are two different types of taxes: town tax and plottax. Town tax is a general tax that is taken from all residents. Plottax is a tax per plot. Both can be set to 0. Town taxes also has the option to be set to a % based system. To set up a tax: /town set taxes [amount] /town set plottax [amount] To toggle between flat and percentage tax (this is only for general tax): /town toggle taxpercent King Lars is our resident expert on Towny, if you have a question please contact him via the forum.

5.6 Towny FAQ

Question How do I get a house to live in ? Answer - You look through the Altera Census to find a town appropriate for your character and you apply to join. Question How do I start a town ? Answer - You start a town with Towny. This costs 50,000 Radiants. The price is steep to make sure people put time and effort into their builds and encourage players to work together to accomplish things. After the initial price of starting the town, the upkeep is charged every 24 hours, currently this upkeep is zero. Question - A town that doesn't use the Towny plots ? Answer - Contrary to popular belief, this is possible. As a mayor you claim the area you want to build in, but you don't have to sell out the plots for resident to private. You can keep everything public. This way the entire area you claim is protected from outsiders, but all residents are free to build within these perimeters. This way you can still be creative about your town. Make sure you organize your town accordingly, lest it not turn into chaos ! Question - A castle ? Answer - You build it within the perimeter of your town. If it won't fit within your town and it would add something to our server, you can apply for building permission outside your town. Question - An automatic cobblestone/obsidian/farm ? Answer - You find another server. Generators lag the server. It's ok to have a farm with a switch to pour water, but don't overdo it. Anything that is turned on 24/7 is not allowed. Question - An elven village, underground dwarven city, treehouse village etc.? Answer - Start your own themed town. Put a thread explaining the style you want your residents to build in. Be picky of the people you let into your town and tell them to keep to the style you are building in. If you really want to make it grand and it would add to the server, and you already belong to a town, you can apply for special permission. I can guarantee many people will want to live in a properly set up themed town. Question - The Titanic ? Answer - You find a freebuild server.

Haha! What's a Titanic?

Question - An ancient sunken city, with a hidden treasure for one who finds it ? Answer - You apply for special permission to build and we will set you up with a plot to build in. Question - A statue devoted to cat_rapist69 ? Answer - You find cherberts backyard and build it there. Prepare to be smitten after. Question - A house in this beautiful area you just found, with great view, on top of a mountain or near a lake, just for you to live in ? Answer - You will have to start a town. It's a steep price for just one person, but it's the only way to make sure people put time and effort in their builds. You can start a town and not invite anyone. As the single resident you are entitled to 8 plots, which should be plenty to build things in for 1 person. Also you pay only 100 Radiants upkeep per day.

Which god is this?

Question - A mansion for a king ? Answer - The kings live in the Radiants Palace or in a town of their own choosing. Special builds for the royal family can be commissioned, but this is a Kings discretion. Do not ask about it. Question - A floating castle of pure evil ? Answer - No floating buildings. Question - A Japanese (oriental) medieval styled town/build ? Answer - This is possible, but make sure it's well away from other towns and builds and make it look realistic and good. It looks strange to have a random oriental styled town in the middle of other more European-styled towns. Question - An embassy to another town ? Answer - Claim a plot as an 'outpost' adjacent to their town. Or ask permission to build on their property. Question - A remote mining operation, or a safe house, a guard tower, border defence etc. Answer - Claim an outpost for your town. These cost more than regular plots, but it area claimed is the same as any other plot and becomes part of your town.

7.4 Some advice from Hollow World players

Roopot Argue with the admins at your peril.

I'm sure I already mentioned the perils for sale at Skaggie rock didn't I?They are knocked off probably but who cares eh? aha!
SqueeGurl - Don't be stupid. Read the rules, and follow them. If you're unsure about something, feel free to ask an admin, but don't argue with us when we tell you how something is. If you don't like a ruling, come to us in private, and politely plead your case. We are actually pretty nice unless you act a fool. Kaies - Don't break rules. Serve Kaies tea. Tantara - Look at all towns before settling one! Make sure that you like that town's player base and architecture, if you're looking for something in particular. Also, get mining as soon as you get on! You will have to buy a plot/pay taxes in towns, so you need cash as soon as possible. Itzzaboy - Don't be too serious if something goes wrong, as that usually just makes things worse. E.g. your killed by a mob, don't rage as it makes everyones life unpleasant and the moderators will have to take time out of their busy lives to straighten you out, time that could be used for making the server, and your hollow world experience, better! Gabythedragongirl - read the character profiles and history of altera if you're stuck on a char! lots of the stories have room for another character, and the history of altera is epic and can inspire you. to clarify on the whole "stories having room for another char," say someone is looking for their lost sibling. you could be the lost sibling. but as with most things of this sort, please ask the person who made the story you wish to insert yourself in if it's OK, OK? Anon Kaies is a grumpy sod.

Anon?! Has a point though
