DATA PROCESSING METHOD

In the data processing, the factors affecting the Letran second year students’ failed
subjects are categorized into five: student factor; teacher factor; emotional factor;
financial factors; and subject factors.

STASTISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The statistical tool used to answer the research questions of the study stated in the
“statement of the problem” in chapter 1 is the mean for grouped data because the number
of the sample size, which is 74, is greater than 30.

The formula in finding for the mean is:

The is the assumed mean which is the class mark with the highest frequency or
the modal class.

The frequency is denoted by f which is determined by the number of respondents

who answered the particular choice of answer.

The d, which is the coded value, are the integers with 0 at the modal class.

The n is the number of sample size and the w is the class width which is
computed by means of dividing the range by the class interval.
The level of significance used is 0.05. The degree of significance of the findings
is moderately serious.

CHAPTER 4
Results, Analysis & Interpretation of data

To determine the mean () of every table, this formula is used:

where: = mean
= assumed mean
f = frequency
d = coded value
n = sample size
w = class width

Category A: Factors affecting the failed subjects with regards to “student factor”

Table 4.1: Survey results regarding “laziness”

x f d df
1 1 -4 -4
2 2 -3 -6
3 6 -2 -12
4 26 -1 -26
5 39 0 0
∑ = - 48

Interpretation: Based on the survey, laziness significantly affects the failed subjects of
the Letran second year students.

Table 4.2 : Survey results with regards to “vices”

x f d fd
1 9 -2 -18
2 4 -1 -4
3 21 0 0
4 20 +1 20
5 20 +2 40
∑ = 38

Interpretation: The computed value for mean is approximately 4 which corresponds to

significant. This means that vices are significant factors which affect the
failed subjects of Letran students.
Table 4.3: Survey results with regards to “extra – curricular activities”

x f d fd
1 7 -3 -21
2 6 -2 -12
3 25 -1 -25
4 28 0 0
5 8 +1 +8
∑ = -50

Interpretation: According to the survey, the mean for table 3 is 3. This means that Extra-
curricular activities are uncertain factors with regards to the failed subjects of the
students.

Category B: Factors affecting the failed subject with regards to “teacher factor”

Table 4.4: Survey results regarding “academic qualifications”

x f d fd
1 4 -3 -12
2 3 -2 -6
3 12 -1 -12
4 33 0 0
5 22 +1 +22
∑ = -8
Interpretation: the computed value for mean which is approximately 4 means that
academic qualifications of the teacher significantly affect the failing
grades of Letran students.

Table 4.5: Survey results regarding “professor’s specialization’

x f d fd
1 3 -3 -9
2 3 -2 -6
3 11 -1 -11
4 33 0 0
5 24 +1 +24
∑ = -2

Interpretation: Specialization of the professors significantly affects the Letran students’

failure. We came up with this conclusion by means of the computed value for mean
which is approximately 4.
Table 4.6: Survey results regarding “professors’ class management”

x f d fd
1 3 -3 -9
2 1 -2 -2
3 16 -1 -16
4 30 0 0
5 24 +1 +24
∑ = -3

Interpretation: Survey shows that professors’ class management significantly affects the
failing marks of Letran second year students.
Category C: Factors affecting students’ failed subjects with regards to “emotional
factor”

Table 4.7: Survey results regarding “relationship problems”

x f d fd
1 5 -3 -15
2 3 -2 -6
3 15 -1 -15
4 26 0 0
5 25 +1 +25
∑ = -11

Interpretation: Some of the significant factors that affect Letran second year students’
academic failures are the relationship problems.

Table 4.8: Survey results regarding “family problems”

x f d fd
1 4 -4 -16
2 6 -3 -18
3 17 -2 -34
4 21 -1 -21
5 26 0 0
∑ = -89
Interpretation: The computed value for mean is approximately 4 which means that
family problems significantly affects the students’ failed subjects.
Table 4.9: Survey Results regarding “Interaction with Classmates and Friends”

x f d fd
1 3 -3 -9
2 10 -2 -20
3 18 -1 -18
4 23 0 0
5 20 +1 +20
∑ = −27

Interpretation: Interaction with classmates and friends significantly affects the students’
failed subjects.
Category D: Factors affecting students’ failed subjects with regards to “Financial Factors”

Table 4.10: Survey Results regarding “Costly Subject Requirements”

x f d fd
1 0 -3 0
2 4 -2 -8
3 21 -1 -21
4 27 0 0
5 22 +1 +22
∑ = −7

Interpretation: Statistics shows that the mean is approximately 4 which corresponds to

significant. Costly subject requirements significantly affect the academic performances of
the students.
Table 4.11: Survey Results regarding “Allowance”

x f d fd
1 2 -2 -4
2 5 -1 -5
3 25 0 0
4 24 +1 +24
5 18 +2 +36
∑ = 51
