Molan’s guide to Ganareth

First of all the purpose of this guide is to give players a few hints about the game. This
is not a complete list and its subject for improvement.
The guide will be divided into sections and you can browse those from the context menu

Chapter 1. Starting the game:

1.1. Account & Download

1.1.1. To download the game you need to access http://www.darkandlight.com , create

your account and download preferably using the ftp server option.

1.1.2. To pay for the game you need a Click and Buy account, be aware that C&B is
very sensitive with some credit cards and it may take a while to activate your
account if you mistype anything or your CC is not by their liking.

1.1.3. Now you can chose between 2 types of subscriptions, the free one gives you
limited choices while the master pack is a full subscription. We can’t say which is
better for the moment, so if you are not sure about the game go for the free one
and save some money.

1.2. Installing the game

1.2.1. Once you downloaded the game double click the DNLinstaller.exe file and install
it wherever you like on your drives.

1.2.2. When the installation is complete you can launch the game and update it to the
final version using the launcher.

1.3. Starting the game tweaks & options

1.3.1. Before entering Ganareth you may wish to make some tweaks to your video
settings in order to improve performance. Here is a short list of tweaks you can do
to your video card settings:
1.3.1.1. turn off shaders and other forms of shader control
1.3.1.2. turn off antialiasing
1.3.1.3. turn off anisotropic filters and optimization
1.3.1.4. turn off triple buffering
1.3.1.5. turn on vertical sync
1.3.1.6. remove any application controlled option you got and make your own
choice
1.3.1.7. set your card for high performance

1.3.2. Settings you can do to the game:

1.3.2.1. Engine mode: this settings balances between the CPU load and your
Video card load, lower numbers meaning less quality in game and less load on
your video card. This setting is narrowed only by trial and error and differs
from system to system.
1.3.2.2. Shader quality low means more fps for lower image quality. This option
can be altered in game with a /engineSetQuality (Low, Medium, High)
command
1.3.2.3. To check your FPS in game you can open the game menu then chose
debug option.
1.3.2.4. Experiment with settings and see how they work for your computer.
1.3.2.5. Updating your drivers to the latest build on your motherboard and video
card will improve your fps.

3.3.8. The buffs window
3.3.8.1. This window is tricky; by default de window starts somewhere on the top
of your screen and it’s invisible because it’s totally transparent. To find it move
your mouse on the top side of the screen until is changes into a drag cursor.

3.3.8.2. Drag the window into the desired position.

3.3.8.2.1. When a buff is active on you (or a debuff) the window will display

3.3.10.7. Under the opened bag window there is a line that displays the money
(numbers are to the left of the icons) (no.1).
3.3.10.8. Also the left most sign displays how much weight you are carrying. Placing
the mouse over that sign will show the load / max load you got (no.2).
3.3.10.9. Belt is a very important asset since the potions need to be dragged into
the belt in order to use them. Later on in the game you can get belts with
higher capacity (no.3).

3.3.11. The inventory window (character screen in fact)

3.3.11.1. To open the character window press “I” key.
3.3.11.2. This window displays your name, your food status, your class, your level,
all the character armor, weapon and special items slots.
3.3.11.3. On the lower side is an indication of how many ability points you have
available to spend.
3.3.11.3.1. Each attribute costs some points, they vary with your class and
your race.
3.3.11.3.2. To spend points click the plus sign corresponding to the ability you
want to increase. Placing your mouse over an ability plus sign will show
how much it costs.
3.3.11.3.3. Each ability influences your character in various ways:

File Version 1.0

2006-06-07
9
3.3.11.3.3.1. Strength: how much damage you do in melee/ranged with
default attacks (varies for some classes). How much you can carry.
3.3.11.3.3.2. Dexterity: your chance to hit your target with the default
attack (melee and ranged)
3.3.11.3.3.3. Intelligence: your mana pool (MP)
3.3.11.3.3.4. Charisma: your luck, it may increase some other things like
chance to loot/extract.
3.3.11.3.3.5. Constitution: increases your health pool (HP) and your
stamina pool (SP).
3.3.11.3.3.6. Quickness: affects the speed of your movement and your
change to dodge the default attacks in melee/ranged.
3.3.11.3.3.7. Wisdom: increases your regeneration rate on all pools
3.3.11.3.4. AC is your Armor Class and it will absorb some damage from
melee/ranged default attacks.
3.3.11.4. Above the attributes you have the resists to different spell types for your
character
3.3.11.5. Lower left corner displays the stats of your melee default attack. They
change with the weapon you are using.
3.3.11.6. Middle low slots are for melee weapon, shield and ranged weapon.

3.3.12. The skills window

3.3.12.1. This window is probably the most important window in the game. It’s
complicated and there are a lot of tool tip features so hover your mouse over
all the objects to discover hidden info that is stashed there.

File Version 1.0

2006-06-07
10
3.3.12.2. The top of the window displays the points you can distribute and the points
you can withdraw from the different trees.
3.3.12.3. FXP = Fighting XP
3.3.12.4. SXP = Social XP
3.3.12.5. CXP = Crafting XP
3.3.12.6. Your actual level is given by the FXP level. The social XP is used in the
social/political side of the game and it constitutes minimal requirement for
placing forts and holdings.
3.3.12.7. Your CXP level is the crafting level of you character. You can distribute
CXP points into your desired crafting ability and you have to spend them
according with you the recipes you want to specialize in.
3.3.12.8. A very important aspect is the fact that you can redistribute (respect) over
time by taking some points from a skill you consider you do not want and can
invest those back into other trees. About every 15-20 minutes one point is
added to your redistribute list, both for FXP and CXP. They add up to a total of
5 points. You can take those out at any time and redistribute them, more will
be added over time until they again hit the 5 cap limit
3.3.12.9. To spend points into a tree you click the “+” sign corresponding to that
tree. The points are added to the whole tree and with each point you spend
the abilities that are locked out will/may become available skills. Also the
abilities that are already unlocked will increase in power and level.
3.3.12.9.1. Unlike other games DNL has a nice feature where most of the skills
have multiple effects making the game very complex and also offering a
more powerful use to the skills that are in game.
3.3.12.9.2. Skill effects can have negative and positive values also they will
show in green and red. Green is for positive spells usable on yourself or
your friends (allies). Red spells are attack spells and impairments usable
on your enemies.
3.3.12.9.3. Also unlike other games the area spells are not bound to your
group they simply affect the area for all friends or enemies according to
their type. Therefore you may buff everyone around when you use an
area buff on yourself.
3.3.12.9.4. Some skills can or need to be cast on the ground. Those are area
spells (skills like traps for example) that can be persistent or on a timer.
3.3.12.10. positioning your mouse over the title of a tree you will get info about how
many points you need for the next level to become available in that tree. With
each increase the cost of a skill tree increases as well.
3.3.12.11. Positioning your mouse over a skill will display info about the skill. The
current level of the skill as well as a preview of the next level of that skill in
order for you to get an idea about how it will be affected when you will
increase it. You can see what the locked skills do in the same way.
3.3.12.12. Using a skill costs something either HP or MP or SP or combinations of
those. If a skill cost is too high you need to consider spending points into an
attribute in order to be able to use that skill.
3.3.12.13. The crafting skills behave in the same manner as the fighting skills and
they can also be redistributed. Same works for extraction skills. Those are
supposed to be used by crafters to improve their ability to extract resources.

Chapter 4. Leveling and fighting

4.1. Your character starts with FXP level 1 this gives you from start 1 FXP point to spend.
As a Citizen you have the option to spend in any of the trees: Healer, Hunter, Fighter,
and Spellcaster.

4.1.1. Consider spending your points into the fighter class at first. This will help you
increase your melee attacks.

4.1.2. Use specials (skills) the default attack may be too low and will not cause enough
damage on the mobs. It can also miss while the special skills don’t.

4.1.3. Take a look on all skill trees make an idea of how they are in order to consider
your path for later on.

4.1.4. Drink and / or eat to keep your food level high. This will give u a high
regeneration rate. If your character will starve it will stop regenerating over time.

4.1.5. Sitting increases your regeneration rate. If you are attacked when sitting you take
double damage.

4.1.6. Don’t turn your back to a mob that is attacking you it will be considered Backstab
and will cause double damage.

4.2. At lower levels (up to level 5) it will be wise to invest in Constitution and increase your
HP and SP as well and in wisdom to keep up your regeneration rate.

4.3. Keep in mind that at level 10 (yes the official site is wrong you chose your next path at
level 10 not 5) the attributes costs will lower and scale up to adapt to the path you will
chose. So saving some attributes points for later use it may be a smart move)

4.3.1. At level 10 when you need to make your first class choice consider it well; it can’t
be undone. Once you made your choice the skill lines from the citizen tree will
disappear and only the one that you chosen will remain. The points spent in other
trees will be refunded and you can start invest in the new lines that are now
available for you.

4.3.2. At level 10 the same thing happens, you will be presented with your final choice
for your subclass. The cost of the attributes will change again and of course will
lower for the attributes that are considered relevant for your subclass. Again saving
attributes points until you make this choice will be wise. The class skill lines will
again be reduced only to the one that corresponds with your final subclass and
points will be refunded.

4.3.3. The subclass has also 3 skill lines. In most cases first one is the fighting line,
second would be more inclined towards buffs and other support spells and last one
will be expertise which is just a tree with passive abilities like more regeneration
rate, lower cast time, higher defenses and such.

4.3.4. Spend wise, take a look at each tree and try to picture all variables like reload
timers for your spells, cast times, interruptible or not and chose to invest into the
best line for your class. Going deep down into the tree and becoming specialized

File Version 1.0

2006-06-07
12
pays off since the unlocked skills grow also with every level you have purchased.
The deeper you go into the tree the more expensive it becomes. Do not worry
though you can still redistribute them if you made a mistake.

4.4. When fighting consider well the distance towards your target, move your mouse over
the target’s health pool and see how much it has.

4.4.1. In DNL mobs can have the same FXP level but be totally different in strength,
type of attacks and can have even 2x more hit points. Learning what you can kill
pays off.

4.4.2. A very good way to know what the mobs difficulty is will be to enable Enemy and
LVL XP options on your minimap the actual color of the mobs is related to their
aggression and not with their level, the background and border indicates the
difficulty.

4.5. In DNL the NPC monsters will migrate and the spawn places will change over time. So
finding the right mobs for you will require a bit of exploration.

4.5.1. Hint: the easiest way to wonder around will be to buy a Hand Glider and a
parachute and fly around the area. The higher you go in FXP level the further you
may need to go to find the right monsters. DNL has a vast transportation network of
boats, balloons, dragons and teleport towers that can help you in your travels.

4.5.2. Do not worry you can return to your starting town anytime you like by using the
/gateToBirthplace command.

4.5.3. You can use the command /bind anywhere in the world to make yourself a bind
point; this will be useful once you found a place to hunt and you want to return fast
in that area in case you need to leave or you die. To return to your bind point from
anywhere in the world use the /gate command.

Chapter 5. Exploration and traveling

5.1. Ganareth is huge, exploration can take long hours and the world is beautiful and full of
mobs, quests, places to go and resources to mine.

5.2. The map starts unlocked the more you travel and the more places you visit the more
transportation routes, crafting places, NPC vendors and other things will light on your
map and minimap.

5.3. You can find boats, balloons, dragons and telepherics in Ganareth.

5.4. To use transportation device get in range and right click it and chose use, each
transport has a cost in Goths but it’s pretty cheap. Mana towers need to be activated by
the players using resources like crystals and wood. Also the mana towers will have a
range in which they will increase the player’s regeneration rate. More info about this will
be added later on once players will start activating and keeping the towers full with
resources.

Chapter 6. Items and crafting

File Version 1.0

2006-06-07
13
6.1. DNL has no magic items loot drops. All the items like weapons armor jewelry and the
like are player made. This ensures the usefulness of the crafting professions. Crafters
are able to make those items using recipes that can be bought from the merchants.

6.2. Advancing in crafting levels and ranks is a game of patience and takes a lot of time and
money.

6.3. To start your crafting career you need to visit the local merchant and buy recipes. Buy
the recipes you desire and make sure they belong to the same line you want to
specialize in. To advance to the next level of crafting you need to bring 3 recipes of the
same type (not same item) to level 80 TN (Training Number) (no.3).

6.4. Each recipe has 3 types of items that need to be added to make an item as well as
process.

6.5. After you purchase your recipe look into your bags and find the scrolls you bought.
Right click and chose “Use”; that will add the recipe to your known recipes list.

6.6. Open your receipt window

6.6.1. On the top side is the main filter that will show the current professions in the
game.

6.6.2. For each profession and level you will have a requirement to meet in order to get
to the next level as already stated above. To find the requirement hover your
mouse over the test where it says “recipes left”; it will bring a tool tip that will
explain what you need to do (no.2).

6.6.3. The list of recipes can be arranged by name, TN, etc by clicking the small arrows
near each column name.

6.6.4. On the lower side of the window there are more filters for professions and
crafting ranks.

6.6.5. Each recipe needs ingredients, to see what your recipe needs hover your mouse
over it.

6.6.6. To open the crafting pane double click on the desired recipe.

6.6.7. To start crafting you need to be near the crafting station that the recipe needs.
It’s listed at the bottom of each recipe (no.4).

6.7. Crafting is influenced by the gods also. For best results you will want to find a crafting
station that is situated in a region that is controlled by one of the gods that is currently
on the sky (see the gods section on the minimap) (no.5).

6.8. Before you proceed to your crafting station you will want to supply yourself with
ingredients. Buy from the merchant a good amount of ingredients that will fit your
recipe. Keep in mind that some recipe will accept more ingredients and each has an
effect on the items you create, but you can only add one type to the recipe. For
example a recipe may use bone and wings, so just thing what u want more AC or more
Qui and buy only the one you will use.

File Version 1.0

2006-06-07
14
6.9. The merchants will list the “Resources” under the “Refined” filter and the Magic
Ingredient” under “Ingredient” filter.

6.10. Once you are in the range of your crafting station you can start add the resources
and ingredients to your crafting pane. Once you added all 4 the “Train” (no.7) button
will become available.

6.10.1. Each recipe has a number of train items needed before you can make the
final product. It is listed on the recipe and on the crafting panel. This is affected by
your skills and will decrease if you invest CXP into the training corresponding with
the profession the recipe belongs to.

6.10.2. On the right lower window the chance of increase in TN will be displayed
as well as the base quality number.

6.10.3. Once you made the needed training items for a product you can add those
to the last slot (no.6). The training items are in your bag if you didn’t figure it yet.

6.10.4. At this point if you added all the resources, ingredients and the training
items needed the Combine Button will light (no.8). It will display a combine chance
(you can fail). Pressing the combine button will produce the final item.

6.10.5. For each training item you make you will receive 25 CXP. For each final
product you make you will receive 50CXP. Invest your CXP in one line until u hit
level 20 CXP.
6.10.5.1. The higher the TN of a recipe the lower the chance to increase TN will be.
At level 20 providing you invested all your CXP into just one line you may get a
chance boost that will help a lot.

File Version 1.0

6.11. When you are near the right crafting station the station on your crafting pane will
change its color to green (no.4)
