Senators Press Obama on Iran's Central Bank WASHINGTONMore than 90 U.S. senators signed a letter to President Barack Obama pressing him to sanction Iran's central bank, with some threatening legislation to force the move, an outcome that would represent a stark escalation in tensions between the two countries. Such a measure, if effectively implemented, could potentially freeze Iran out of the global financial system and make it nearly impossible for Tehran to clear billions of dollars in oil sales every month, said current and former U.S. officials. UN Security Council resolutions that tightened sanctions on Iran and North Korea were major accomplishments, for which President Barack Obama and UN Ambassador Susan Rice deserve credit. By showing a willingness to listen to others Rice has improved U.S. relations with senior UN officials and other key delegations. But Obama and Rice have been less successful in explaining to the American people why supporting the UN is in the U.S.s interest. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-08-30/u-s-should-show-its-support-for-un-by-trying-to-fixwhat-s-wrong-view.html http://www.sacbee.com/2011/08/22/3854302/thousands-of-iranian-americans.html

Iran's Nuclear situation

http://www.businessinsider.com/iran-moving-transferingcentrifuges-to-boost-uranium-enrichment-2011-8 August 22, 2011 Iran has begun transferring centrifuges to its new underground nuclear plant site near Qum, the country's state-run television station reported Monday."The site is being made ready and a series of centrifuges have already been transferred," Fereydoun Abbasi, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization told the station. "We aren't rushing and we seek to observe technical

standards."Abbasi did not specify how many centrifuges have been transferred so far, although the government has previously said it plans to transfer 20% of its uranium-enrichment manufacturing to the new site. The transfer will boost the country's production capacity by threefold, according to the Global Security News wire. The AP reports that the new nuclear complex, located south of Tehran, is built into a rocky formation in order to withstand potential strikes on the facility. Iran's ramped up efforts to enrich uranium which makes up the core of a nuclear bomb is the focus of U.S. concerns over the country's nuclear program. Iran insists its intentions are non-military.The reports are "troubling" for the U.S. and the international community, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters today."The Iranian nuclear program offers no plausible reason for its existing enrichment of uranium up to nearly 20 percent, nor ramping up this production, nor moving centrifuges underground," Nuland said. "And its failure to comply with its obligations to suspend its enrichment activities...have given all of us in the international community reason to doubt its intentions."
