MIGUELA . Flor, stop dancing and sit down. Gila, my little daughter, don't jump so much
anymore.
GILA . But mom, it's really cold and I dance so I don't feel it.
LIBRADA . Bato, my son. Stop jumping and so do you, Lupe, you look like a grasshopper.
LUPE: I just like to jump around.
BATO: Me too and with Gila, even more so.
GILA . Bato!
BATO . Gila!
LUPE AND MIGUELA : They look like couples!
MIGUELA . Hmm! That's enough of all the cuddling.
GILA . We don't seem, we are.
MIGUELA . Shut up, Gila, don't talk nonsense.
BATO . Of course we are.
LIBRADA . Son, Bato. What are you saying.
BATO . Well the truth. That Gila and I are dating.
SPYRIDION: . Leave them alone, Mrs. Miguela. If they love each other, so much the better.
MERENCIANA: But... they are still reluctant about those things....
LUPE : Better, Doña Mere, better. To be firm, affection has to start from a young age.
OLD MAN : I am the oldest shepherd in the region and I had already realized that these
little boys were up to something.
2
(Doña Jorga, Petra and Pascuala enter)

PETRA: To the good nights.

OLD . Doña Jorga, Petrita, Pascuala... What are they doing here? How do you get over your
problems?
JORGA . I'm already much improved. My head no longer hurts all day long, and my left eye
doesn't want to see well. I have my left arm from rheumatism and I get blood
hemorrhages every other day. My heart hardly beats, I'm going to be stiff, I have chills and
cough all the time... But for the rest, I'm already improved.
OLD . How pleased I am.
BATO: . And where are they going?
PETRA: Pal inn. You already know that it is a business that cannot be left alone for a
while... Thank goodness Pascuala, although she is a bit stupid, helps me.
EASTER . Possibly one does.
JORGA . Well, we came to see if any of the shepherds would like to accompany us to the
inn. This mountain is re-dark and you see how there are bad people in these parts.
OLD . There was nothing more missing. Bato Do you want to accompany them?
BATO . As you say, old shepherd.
LIBRADA . Take a serape, mi'ho. Don't go cold.
BATO . Yes mom.
3
(Bato goes to grab a serape, heavenly music begins to be heard, an Angel appears, dressed
as an Indian, with pink and blue tissue paper wings)
3
ARCHANGEL . Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to men of good will.
ALL . It's an angel... an angel.
ARCHANGEL . Hear me shepherds. God, the only all-powerful God, creator of heaven and
earth, is going to send his son into the world to redeem men from all sins and teach them
the true faith. The mother of that child will be a pure virgin named Mary who is the wife
of a carpenter named Joseph, and Bethlehem, this humble little town, has been chosen by
God for her son to be born. Mary and Joseph are already making a pilgrimage here and will
arrive soon. Receive them with joy and love because theirs is the kingdom of heaven, and
truly I tell you that everyone who goes to worship the child, who will be born in
Bethlehem, will receive the most precious gifts, since because he is the child of God, that
child will be the King of Kings. Is So be prepared. Make sure that your souls are pure to
receive and worship Him, and that the blessing of the Lord be with you.

(The Angel disappears)

ALL .- He's gone....Miracle....miracle....

LUPE . -He has said that the son of God will come to be born among us.
FLOWER . -Let's tell everyone.
ALL . - Miracle... Miracle...
(THEY COME OUT DARK)
SECOND TABLE.
4
(curtain of hell)

LUZBEL . Curse. The Son of God is going to be born there on earth..... Everyone will go to
worship him... They will all become good And I... The queen of hell, I'm furious. Furious! I
have to prevent the shepherds from going to worship him. I have to do something..... But
what? I know.. to great evils, great remedies..... I'm going to send that devil to earth llo
Mexicano....El Pingo, let him prevent the shepherds from going to worship the child God.
Yes, I will do that... Pingo.... Pingo...

(Pingo enters)

PINGO . You called me....

LUZBEL . - Yeah. Listen. God has sent his son to earth to redeem men from all sins; we
have to prevent it.... and you will be in charge of doing it.
PINGO . I? But how? And how should I do it?
LUZBEL . You will go to earth.... You will look for a small town called Belén. Sow envy.
Make all the shepherds hate each other. Make sure they become bad and above all
prevent them from going to worship the child who will be born in Bethlehem.
PINGO .- Good.
LUZBEL . - He lies... he always lies. Raise up falsehoods and the shepherds will live in
continuous war. Make everyone ambitious. But above all, he prevents the shepherds from
giving Mary and Joseph accommodation and from going to worship the child. If you
achieve it, we will have triumphed.
PINGO.- I will do it this way, and you will see, lady, that I will emerge victorious in the
test since no one will go to worship the child God.

THIRD TABLE
5
(The shepherds' field, El Viejo and Merenciana enter and sit on a stone, Petra and Pascuala
enter)

PETRA: Good morning... My sister Jorga tells me to bring you these cheeses that we made
yesterday and that are soggy.
OLD . - Well, thank Mrs. Jorge. And how does he get over his troubles?
PETRA : Improved, she says that since the angel appeared to tell us about the birth of the
God-Child, she no longer even remembers the illness.
EASTER : Does Asté really believe that the son of God is going to be born here in this sad
town?
OLD . This is what the angel said.
PETRA . Yes, but where is the son of God going to be born here where everything is
poverty and misery? Pascuala and I don't believe it.
MERENCIANA: . I believe that God has seen that this people, although they try, are good
and full of joy and happiness. Here neither envy, malice, nor gossip is known. OLD MAN :
When have you seen an arguende here? When a lawsuit? Never. That is why I believe that
God wants his son to be born among us, that we be stubborn, but that we have feelings
and heart.
PETRA: . Well, you are right. Wow, it's nice to talk to Asté. Well, we went back to the inn
because Jorga doesn't like me to delay so much.
OLD . We'll accompany you to the bridge, will you? And don't forget what I told you. Try
it, but let us know. I am sure that if that joy and happiness were to end, the child of God
would not be born here...
6
(The Old Man and Pascuala exit. Pingo enters with jorongo and hat)

PINGO . I have dressed up like the inhabitants of the region so I can easily mix with them.
And don't I really look like the devil? Furthermore, I have hidden my tail well... therefore
they cannot recognize me... But here comes Míguela with her daughter Gila.... I'm going to
hide.

(He hides, Miguela, Flor and Gila enter).

MIGUELA . Come daughters and let's rest for a while. It's so cold.
FLOWER: . So soon you got tired, mom.
MIGUELA . Hmm! Like I'm not your age (SIGH) But when I was young I worked hard and
well.
GILA . Hey, mom... while you're resting, let me go for a walk along the stream... I've seen
Bato go there.
MIGUELA . Cool.... But you take your sister and just for a little while we have to work.
GILA . We come now....

(He runs away. Enter the pingo).

5
PINGO . Good morning, Mrs. Miguela.
MIGUELA : What are you, son? I don't know you.
PINGO . He doesn't know me like that because I'm always down there...
MIGUELA . Below.....?
PINGO . In the ravine, but I do know Asté and her daughters, her daughter Gila, so cool.
MIGUELA . Isn't it true that it's cool? And in my time, I also played re-piocha.
PINGO . But like in your time, Doña Míguela, she's still cool like this.
MIGUELA . But how nice this shepherd is.
PINGO . What they have told me and I have not wanted to believe, is that Asté's
daughter... Gila is so cool, she says she's going to marry Bato, that stupid son of Doña
Librada. Asté's daughter deserves better.
MIGUELA . You think?
PINGO .- Of course, she is cool and she could marry a rich man who will take her away
from work and take her away from working... wouldn't you like that?
MIGUELA . Of course I would like it.
PINGO . Pay attention to what I tell you. I know that there are many rich people who
would gladly marry her and take her out of probation. No, Mrs. Miguela, and if you listen
to my advice, be disinterested. sados, he would forbid his daughter to speak with that
Bato and would ensure that she marry a rich man.
MIGUELA . I think you're right.
PINGO . Of course I have it. If Gila marries that guy, what will happen to her and Asté?
Continue working all your life? Because this way you no longer cook at the first boil or in
the express pot.
MIGUELA . Well you are very right. I am not going to allow my daughter to grind her life.
She must marry a rich man who will get us out of trouble. I'm going to look for her and tell
her that she shouldn't marry that fool Bato.
PINGO . Yes, go ahead...
MIGUELA . Right now I'm going to the stream. See you later, and thank you very much for
your advice. Right away it becomes clear that you are a real man.

7
(Miguela exits).

PINGO . My work has already begun. As soon as those lovers see each other, hatred and
disagreement will begin here apart. But someone is coming, I'll hide.

(El Pingo hides. Merenciana and Espiridión enter.

SPYRIDION: . You don't know how I thank you... But I'm re-poor.
MERENCIANA: Don't worry. I'm going to my house and I'll bring you a bag of corn, which
I'll gladly lend you.
SPYRIDION: . But I don't want my mother to find out, she's not going to tell anyone that
she's going to lend me the sack of corn.
MERENCIANA: Don't be careful. Buddy. I will not tell anybody. Now I gulvo.

(Comes out)
6
SPIRIDION. Wow. What a nice people my comadre is..

(Pingo enters).

PINGO . Good morning, sir.

SPIRIDION . Good morning.
PINGO . Excuse me....but this is the compadre who is waiting for the old shepherdess who
bought a sack of corn that she is going to lend him.
SPIRIDION . Epale.... And how did you know it?
PINGO . Because she just told me herself. Since Asté is dying of hunger along with his lazy
son Bato who doesn't know how to work, he's going to have to lend him a sack of corn so
he can eat... and he also knows that Asté isn't even going to pay him for it. that Asté is a
shameless Indian and a cheater.
SPIRIDIÓN: Did he tell you that? And I told him not to tell it! The truth is, I do need that
corn, but if it's for him to talk about me, I don't want anything. I'm leaving, but he's going
to pay me.
PINGO . She will do well to give her what she deserves when they find her. Tre hit him in
the very head with a pointed stone....
SPIRIDION . You'll see... you'll see......

(Compadre 1 comes out).

PINGO . Another one that I get into trouble...but someone is coming.

(Pingo hides, the Old Shepherd and Compadre 2nd enter with a sack of corn).

MERENCIANA . Buddy... Buddy...

PINGO . - Who are you looking for?
MERENCIANA To my friend.
PINGO . Isn't your compadre a half-young, half-old, half-black, half-guero man, who has
green eyes, as well as completely black blue ones?
MERENCIANA That same one.
PINGO . Well it's already game. He told me that he didn't need his filthy corn full of
weevils at all, and that he had only asked for it because what he didn't want was to hang
out with this guy who is nothing more than an Indian who only likes to walk around in a
mess all day and another portion. of things that I better not even tell them. Listen, what
language does your friend have?
MERENCIANA In case he doesn't want my corn, that's better, but he's ungrateful and
you're going to pay me when I find him.

(He leaves very angry).

8
PINGO . But how stupid men are. But here comes Bato.

(Bato and Lupe enter).

LUPE. Why pass it on to Doña Miguela who arrived so angry?

7
BATO . He just pulled Gila by the hair without giving her any explanations.
PINGO . So I know why...
BATO . You know why?
PINGO . - Because the Old Shepherd told Doña Miguela that she should not allow you to
marry Gila because your Dad had been a madman from the asylum.
BATO . My dad crazy? Ujule it's not even true.
LUPE . My dad wasn't crazy, he was from Michoacán.
PINGO . Therefore, the Old Shepherd told Doña Miguela and that is why Doña Miguela no
longer wants you to marry Gila.
BATO . And because of your gossip, Doña Miguela doesn't want me to marry Gila?....
LUPE : I'm going to look for my mom and tell her everything (Exits)
BATO : That old pastor will see how he's going to get on with arguing and telling lies and
saying that my dad is crazy.

(Bato leaves furious)

9
(Screams are heard from Doña Librada who enters followed by Bato and Lupe).

LIBRADA . These are lies from the old shepherd and I don't know what's wrong with me!
To say that my probe Spyridion went crazy.
BATO . And because of that argument, Doña Miguela no longer even wants me to speak to
Gila.

(Doña Miguela, Flor and Gila enter).

FLOWER : Look.... there's that one.

MIGUELA : Not even a glance, don't miss him because he hit you. You already know that I
don't even want you to look at that starving man.
GLLA . But, mom.
MIGUELA . Not a glance... Do you hear me?
BATO . Look at her like this, ma, not a single thing has been done to me, and I am very
sad.
LIBRADA . Calm down, mijo. I'm going to decently ask Doña Miguela for explanations (HE
GOES TO HER AND TELLS HER IN A CONCILIATING TONE) Listen, Miguela.
MIGUELA . (IN LAWSUIT) Say like this Librada,
LIBRADA . Well, I want to know what he brought so he doesn't want my son to talk to his
daughter, if my son is very good.
MIGUELA . Well yes... it will be very cool. But he is a starving man, a poor Guarachudo
Indian.
LIBRADA . As probe, as Indian and as guarachudo as his daughter.... Why was it believed?
The thing is that Aste is an old fool.
GILA . - Stop the car, Mrs. Librada, so you're not going to call my mom stupid.
BATO . You don't get involved, Gila.
GILA . Of course I get involved. I'm not going to let your mom insult mine.
LIBRADA . But I do it to defend you.
GILA . Please don't defend me, friend.
LIBRADA . Do you realize, my son, what kind of girl you have for a girlfriend?
8
MIGUELA . Is my daughter bald? The peeled one will be Asté and Asté's grandmother.

10
(General lawsuit. Enter the Old Shepherd)

OLD . What's going on? What scandal is this?

MIGUELA . It's Mrs. Librada and that bald son of hers.
OLD . I don't think so, Mrs. Librada. Asté has a very good character. Still Mrs. Miguela.
MIGUELA . (PULLING HIM) What does this have to say about my character?
LIBRADA . And so what you should do is keep your mouth shut and not go around
inventing things, old arguer.
MIGUELA . And so what you should do is not get involved in what doesn't matter to you.

(Compadres enter)

SPIRIDION . That's who I wanted to find.

MERENCIANA. . And I tried to break his snout.

(General dispute, everyone comes out arguing. The pingo appears).

PINGO . Evil has triumphed, long live evil.....

CURTAIN

SECOND ACT
FOURTH TABLE
11
(Entrance of Doña Jorga's inn, Doña Jorga and Pascuala appear).

EASTER . Well, as I say, Mrs. Jorga. The shepherds became terribly relaxed. Everyone is
angry with everyone. Even the Old Shepherd who was so good, has become to re-bad. Bato
and Gila have put on their Moorish eyes and Doña Miguela and Doña Librada have pulled
their braids about twenty-four times.
JORGA . It must be something from the devil.
EASTER . Well, I don't know who the thing is. But what I do tell you, Mrs. Jorgá, is that the
angel thing was a vile joke. Where is God going to come to be born here?
JORGA . Don't even discuss that, Pascuala. The angel said that the child would be born
here and he will be born here.
EASTER . But the angel said that when everything in Bethlehem was peace and goodness.
JORGA . Good. Enough arguing nonsense and let's go inside as the cold gets worse and
worse.

(Doña Jorga enters the inn).

12
EASTER . Oh how Doña Jorga makes me laugh. She is re-excited about the birth of the
Child-God.
9
PINGO . (ASIDE) This is the inn and that is Pascuala. I have to convince them not to let the
Virgin Mary and Joseph enter. Thus, not having lodging at the inn for tonight, they will
continue on their way and the child will be born in the mountains, in an unpopulated area,
no one will find out about it and we will have triumphed. (GOES TO EASTER) Hello.....
EASTER . What is this?
PINGO . I come from the Old Shepherd to give a message to Doña Jorga.
EASTER . Afterwards he will say what is offered to him. Doña Jorga is in there... and since I
don't even like to find out everything...
PINGO . (Aside) She's a gossip. I don't know why... but I feel like this Pascuala is going to
hell...
EASTER . After that he will say. Or are you not thinking of telling me?
PINGO . Well yes, it's telling your mistress not to even think that the child God is going to
be born here.
EASTER . (LAUGHING) I already said it. The muina that Doña Jorga is going to make.
PINGO . (Aside) And he laughs. It's perverse. I don't know why, but I feel like this Pascuala
is going to hell.
EASTER . She so believed that the child was going to be born here. Hey, and why?
PINGO . Why, what?
EASTER . Why not be born here? Where will you be born? (DOÑA JORGA ENTERS UNSEEN
BY EASTER.) Tell me this so I can laugh at Doña Jorga in her pure beard.
JORGA . And why don't you go laugh in your grandmother's beard? lith?
EASTER . Mrs. Jorga!
JORGA . What are you going to laugh at? And why? what are you bringing? And what is this
man and what does he want?
EASTER . Well, I brought him a message from the old shepherd.
JORGA . What message do you bring?
PINGO . Well, the old shepherd says to tell him not to even think that the Child-God is
going to be born here in Bethlehem.
JORGA . But why? If the angel said...
PINGO . Well yes. The angel said what he said, when everything in Bethlehem was full of
joy.... but now.... Afterwards, a series of intrigues, gossip and, above all, lawsuits arose,
which, oh boy.
JORGA . So the child will not be born here.
PINGO . That's what the old shepherd says. That the angel appeared to him and told him
not always. And he also informed him that there are a couple of shepherds walking around
these places who pretend to be Mary: and Joseph, and singing the Holy Pilgrims, they go
to the inns, ask for free lodging, they eat everything and at night, when everyone is They
have slept, they get up and steal everything they can, they leave and if I have seen you I
don't remember. That's why the old shepherd told me, "Go see Mrs. Jorga, she's so stupid,
and tell her that they're not going to allow those scoundrels into her inn."
JORGA . Well, of course I'm not going to allow it. It was the only thing we were missing,
for them to come and steal the little we have, and what we are going to do is lock
ourselves up and not open it to anyone we don't know, even if they say they are the Holy
Pilgrims.
EASTER . I'm going to lock myself in the manger and I won't come out from there.
PINGO . That. Pascuala. You lock yourself in there with the donkeys and your mother and
don't come out at all.
10
JORGA . Cool, boy. We thank you for coming to warn us of the danger we were in. Come
on, Pascuala, let's lock ourselves in and not open it to anyone, especially if they tell us
they are the Holy Pilgrims.

(Doña Jorga enters the inn)

EASTER . (HE VERY FLIRTATELY SAYES TO PINGO) Goodbye, you and we'll see what day we
see each other.
PINGO . Well, whenever you want, Pascuala, I want to have a little talk with you and take
you to a place that I know where it's not cold at all.
EASTER . - Well, it has to be cool. Well, I'll get involved, otherwise Mrs. Jorga will scold
me.

(As he leaves, he blows a kiss to Pingo and closes the door)

PINGO . All my affairs on earth are going perfectly, and suddenly the damned Pascuala
falls in love with me. I don't know why...but it feels like that Pascuala to me. I fuck it to
hell, what do I see? Mary and Joseph approach; I hide to see how he runs them

(Pingo leaves, María and Jose enter)

13
MARY . Let's stop, José, I'm exhausted.
JOSEPH . Yes, María, there I see a house.
MARY . It's an inn. Knock on the door, José, and ask for a lodging for tonight.

(José goes to the door and knocks)

JORGA . (INSIDE) What?

JOSEPH . Some pilgrims.
JORGA . What do they want?
JOSEPH . Open you.
JORGA . I won't open. Say what you want from there.
JOSEPH . (SINGING)
in the name of heaven
I ask you for a posada
because he can't walk
and my beloved wife.
JORGA . (INSIDE)
This is not an inn
keep going
I can't open
Don't be some scoundrel.
MARIA .- (without singing)
Don't be inhuman
have charity
that the God of heaven
11
I will reward you.
JORGA . (INSIDE, without singing))
You can go now
and do not disturb
because if I get angry
I'm going to beat them up.
JOSEPH . (without singing)
We come exhausted
from Nazareth
I'm a carpenter
Named José...
JORGA . (INSIDE)
I don't care about the name
let me sleep
well I already tell you
that we should not open
MARY .
Posada asks you
beloved homemade
for just one night
the queen of heaven
JORGA . (INSIDE)
Well if she is a queen
who requests it
How come at night
Are you so alone?
JOSEPH .
My wife is Maria.
she is queen of heaven
and mother is going to be
of the Divine Word.
JORGA . (INSIDE)
Are you José?
Your wife is Maria?
(OPEN THE DOOR).
Enter pilgrims
I didn't know them.
MARIA AND JOSE.
God pay you gentlemen
your charity
and so the sky fills you
of happiness
JORGA .
Enter Holy Pilgrims
receive this corner
not from my poor abode
but from my heart.
12

(Everyone enters except Pascuala. The pingo comes out).

14
EASTER . Doña Jorga is a complete fool, bringing two thieves into the house like that. But I
do not believe that those are the Holy Pilgrims, nor that the Child will come to be born
here.
PINGO . Shock her, Pascuala, you are one of mine. (ASIDE) I don't know why, but I think
this Pascuala is going to hell.
JORGA . (COMING OUT)
Go Pascuala
don't delay
with the basket
of peanuts
Go Pascuala
Do not entertain
I brought snacks
and bring whatever you have
PINGO . But is he still going to entertain those pair of scoundrels who pretend to be Maria
and José?
JORGA . No. They are not crooks and they do not pretend to be them. I'm sure they are
Mary and Joseph, just seeing them was enough. Pascuala go and tell the old shepherd and
everyone that the angel told the truth that Mary and Joseph are in my house and that the
Child will be born in Bethlehem. Tell them.

(Pascuala leaves for the field. Doña Jorga enters the inn and Pingo bites himself. The tail
of rage).
FIFTH TABLE
15
(Hell. Enter Pingo).

PINGO . When the lady of darkness knows what's happening up there, she's going to kick
me, right there, where my tail starts.

(The Devil enters)

LUZBEL . Pingo... they told me you were back.

PINGO . Yes, Lady, I arrived a moment ago, I have come to tell you what is happening
there on earth.
LUZBEL . Something wrong?
PINGO . A little of everything
LUZBEL . explain yourself
PINGO . I went to the land, and there I sowed gossip, slander and intrigue that a great
uproar arose and all the shepherds hated each other and turned their Moorish eyes on
each other.
LUZBEL . Phenomenal!
13
PINGO . I went to the inn and told the innkeeper that the Holy Pilgrims were impostors
and thieves and she offered me that she would not let them enter.
LUZBEL . Great tonight is the day marked for the birth of the Child-God...
PINGO . Don't go so quickly, lady. That the pilgrims are staying at the Belén inn.
DEVIL . But you didn't just tell me that you convinced the innkeeper not to give them
lodging.
PINGO .- Well yes, but then they came and convinced her.
DEVIL . Oh! The thing is serious, but all is not lost. Return to earth and try to prevent
Pascuala from reaching where the shepherds are.
PlNGO . I'll try. But... if despite everything they find out, what do I do?
DEVIL . -Convince the shepherds not to go to worship the Child. Offer them gold. There is
no one against gold. Tell them that if they follow you you will make them rich and take
them away from Bethlehem. If they follow you we will have triumphed.
PINGO . I will do so. And don't worry, I will make the shepherds go far away from
Bethlehem so that they cannot go to worship the Child-God.

TABLE SIX
16
(The shepherds' field. There is the Old Man, Bato, Gila, Miguela and Librada. Nobody talks
to each other).

OLD . How sad it is to see the shepherds' field silent. Nobody talks, nobody plays.

(Bato sighs)

LUPE . And you... why are you sighing?

BATO . I don't sigh mom
LIBRADA . You sigh for that fool whom everyone via you want. Bad son. Insult your mom
and you still pine for her.
BATO . But I don't even talk anymore. I don't even look at her.
MIGUELA . Gila, let's see if you stop peeling those big eyes to see those starving.
GILA . To whom, mom?
FLOWER . To whom... . to whom? Well, that one.
GILA . What do I look at? If I didn't even make a link to him.
MIGUELA . Not a bond, no. But a few anxious glances so what can I tell you? I hate that
they insult your mom and you're still acting like a offerer and a beggar.
OLD . One moment. I want to talk to you, I know I'm exposing myself to what happened to
Aunt Cleta's dog, whose face was broken the day he came out to bark. We are offending
God with our behavior. Remember that the angel asked us to have peace in our hearts and
joy in our souls.
LIBRADA . Well, yes, but the Angel didn't know that there were heartless people here who
were going to sacrifice the heart of their son out of foolishness.
MIGUELA . Is that what you say for me?
LIBRADA . No, I say this because of an aunt from Asté.
MIGUELA . Look, Librada, shut up, if you don't want me to pull your braids.
LIBRADA . So be encouraged, let's see which braids make more wigs.
14
MIGUELA . Well, of course I'm encouraged,

(They are going to stick together, the Archangel appears)

17
ARCHANGEL . Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to men of good will.
ALL . The angel… the angel.
ARCHANGEL . Hear me shepherds. Baby Jesus will soon be born. When a blue star shines in
the sky it will be a sign that the Son of God has already been born. Remember that
everyone, poor and rich, young and old, humble and powerful, must go prostrate to its
plants and offer it their love. And remember that throughout the world there must be joy,
peace and tranquility tonight, since this will be the happiest night there will be in the
world. Prepare your souls to adore the Child who will be born here and think, shepherds,
that by the work and grace of God, tonight is Christmas Eve and tomorrow is Christmas.

(The Archangel disappears)

18
OLD . Did you hear it right? It is God's will that there be peace in our hearts and joy in our
souls. Are they going to let the Baby Jesus be born among beasts and thorns because they
do not want to ask for forgiveness, nor know how to give it?
LIBRADA . Pos.... For my part no....
MIGUELA . Not even for mine. (TO LIBRADA) Forgive me for this, my soul.
LIBRADA . This is the one who has to forgive

(They hug.)

FLOWER. . And you, don't just stand there.

LUPE: Hug your girlfriend..
GILA . Bato…..
BATO . Gila……
OLD . I am going to the top of the hill to watch for the rising of the star that will guide us
to worship the Child-God.

(The old man leaves).

GLLA . Let's Play.

BATO . Let's go around.

(They form a circle and sing while leaving)

ALL . –
To the spirit, to the spirit
that the water has broken
to the spirit, to the spirit
send it composed,
to the spirit, to the spirit
we do not have money
15
to the spirit to the spirit
with egg shell.

(They leave, the very sad pingo enters)

19
PINGO .- To the spirit, to the spirit... those evil shepherds have already broken it. I didn't
count on this. But I must not give up... (TAKES OUT A PALIACATE WITH GOLD COINS) Here I
have the most powerful weapon.... gold.... the gold... the gold...

(Easter enters)

PINGO . Quibo, you here?

EASTER . Well, Mrs. Jorga sent me to tell the Old Shepherd and everyone who is at the
Mesón la Virgen María and Señor José. Where is the old shepherd?
PINGO . I don't know. (ASIDE) I have to avoid at all costs that Pascuala tells anything to
the shepherds. (TO EASTER) Over there. But look, you go back to the Inn and I will give
your message to the old shepherd.
EASTER . No, because Mrs. Jorga asked me to give it to her personally in person.

(Pascuala sits on a stone).

PINGO . And because you don't feel... and waits for it..... and he tells them...... and
everyone
they go to the inn..... and to the spirit.......
EASTER . Hey, what are you doing so far away? Why don't you come closer?
PINGO . I thought you wouldn't like it.
EASTER . Of course. If I like you I laugh a lot.
PINGO . (ASIDE) I'm going to see if by falling in love with her I can convince Pascuala not
to tell anything to the shepherds, and see if in the process I'll take her to hell. Hey,
Pascuala. Do you know you're really cool?
EASTER . Had no one told me?
PINGO . Hey, Pascuala. And had no one told you that you have pretty eyes?
EASTER . But I am cross-eyed.
PINGO . And that you have a beautiful mouth and beautiful teeth?
EASTER . But if I have already dropped them, I only have three left,
PINGO . And that you're nice, didn't they tell you that either?
EASTER . Neither, Everyone says I'm stupid.
PINGO . They are the fools, who do not know how to appreciate
EASTER . (BEATING THE PINGO ON THE SHOULDER) What things are you saying!
PINGO . (IDEM) What you deserve.
EASTER . (IDEM) Friendly,
PINGO . (IDEM) Pretty
EASTER . - Precious. (THIS TIME THE BLOW IS SO STRONG THAT THE PINGO
FALLS LEAVING HIS TAIL EXPOSED) Did you fall?
PINGO . No, I got off.

(Pascuala goes to him and looks at his tail).

16

EASTER . But what is this? You have a tail! You are the devil... The devil! The devil! The
devil!

(He runs out to the inn at the same time that the Shepherds enter from the opposite side).

20
ALL . What's happening? Who is screaming?
PINGO . I... I scream.....
BATO . What do you say about the devil?
PINGO . Pos.. pos.. that the devil appeared to me.
ALL . - Where?
PINGO . There (EVERYONE SCREAMS) I wanted to take away my bag full of gold.
ALL . Gold...
PINGO . Yes, notice that today I got lost in the mountains and suddenly I found a cave full
of gold.
MERENCIANA . And was there a lot?
PINGO . A splash and two piles, come with me to collect gold so that we can all get rich
(EVERYONE EMBRACES HIM) Well, enough of the cuddles and come with me to collect the
gold.
ALL . Come on.... come on...

(THEY ARE GOING TO LEAVE WHEN THE OLD MAN ENTER)

OLD . Shepherds. The star has shone... the child is born, let's go to Bethlehem.
MERENCIANA . Old shepherd, here this boy has found a cave full of gold and he is coming
for us so that we can be rich.
GILA . Come with us, old shepherd.
OLD . No. We will go another day. Remember that tonight we must go to worship the Child
Jesus.

(The shepherds go next to the Old Man).

PINGO . On no other day, if they don't go right away, they will grind. I'm going for the gold
and whoever wants to follow me.

(The shepherds go next to the Pingo).

OLD . Shepherds. Remember that the Angel told us that we would have no greater fortune
than knowing the Child God.
PINGO . But I offer you gold. If you follow me you will be rich.
OLD . Going to meet the Child will give us happiness.
PINGO . What happiness or what an ax eye. Gold is the only happiness, and ultimately I
leave and whoever wants gold should follow me.

(THEY ARE GOING OUT. EASTER, PETRA AND JORGA ENTER)

17
21
PETRA. . Hear me shepherds. The child has been born.
JORGA . Let's worship him. It is beautiful, very beautiful, the flowers of the field have
opened to see it and the butterflies and the birds adore it too.
OLD . Let's worship him.
BATO . We're going for the gold.
ALL . Gold... Gold....
EASTER . Don't pay attention to that man... because that man... is not even a man.... It's
the devil..... I myself saw his tail.... And if you don't believe me, grab it and look at it...

(Everyone grabs Pingo).

ALL . The devil...

BATO . Get him out of here....

(Everyone hits him. Pingo runs away.

OLD . They see him? They were all tricks of the devil so that we would not worship the
Child-God.
JORGA . And now we go to the inn.
OLD . Yes, we are going to worship the Christ Child and ask Him to forgive us all our sins.
ALL . Come on.... come on.
