August Briggs
Doing What They Love: Unique Single-Vineyard Wines
by Josh Stein
How do you pay it forward, having yourself succeeded in the wine business by doing it your own way? Well, if youre August Joe Briggs, when you decide to move on from the wine business into some well-deserved relaxation with your wife, you do so by letting your nephew, Jesse Inman, and three key, longtime employees, Colette Milliman, Lisa Salling and Matt Gacso, buy the business. You read that right. This isnt the usual story of wineowner-retires-and-sells-to-a-corporation. No, its a very different, much more inspiring one one that shows that good things beget more good things if done the right way. The story of the winery, August Briggs, begins with the story of the man it was named by and for, Joe Briggs. Joe got his start like a lot of others in the Napa Valley: armed with a degree in enology from one of the big three in wine, Fresno State in Joes case, he started by working for others as a consulting winemaker before striking out on his own. In 1995, he produced his first wines under his own label, and in 2002, he took the leap of faith to buy the land for the winerys first location on the Silverado Trail. Joes philosophy was very simple but definitely against the mold at the time: find the best grapes in the best vineyards in Napa and Sonoma and make the best wines possible from them and not just the usual suspects, either. Joe determinedly sought out unusual but terrific varieties, making a name for his seldom-seen-elsewhere Charbono along the way. Today, these ideas, if not common, are at least well represented throughout the North Coast, but two decades ago, they most definitely were not. The belief was that unless you owned it, you couldnt make the best wine from it, and if it was not one of three or four varieties, why make it? Clearly, neither need be the case nor in the recipe for success. Joe slowly but steadily built the brand by focusing on restaurants, where his singlevineyard approach to food-friendly varietals was well received and appreciated for its cuisine-matching ability. Upon construction of the winery, this attention to producing from vineyards and varietals others did not continued, and it still hasnt stopped. Today, the winery produces 4,000 cases spread amongst sixteen different single-vineyard bottlings, including four Pinot Noirs, three Cabernet Sauvignons, two Petite Sirahs and two Chardonnays plus the renowned Charbono and bottlings of ros, Syrah and Zinfandel, as well as the ultra-rare Pinot Meunier, seldom seen except in sparkling wines. And each, as Colette is known to say when asked in the new tasting room, lets the vineyard and appellation shine through. Indeed, the new space is primed for wine tasting. Seeking to be even more in the thick of good things, this next iteration of August Briggs has placed itself in the heart of downtown Calistoga, and theyre even remaining open longer on Fridays and Saturdays to be able to have more time to spend with guests. Dont tell Joe I wrote this, but I think the vibe and location are better now since youre steps from world-class restaurants and tasting rooms no need to move the car since theres a lot going on around you. Jesse says it best, I think: Our new creekside setting, convenient location and onsite parking make it the perfect place for sharing our limited production wines. Not to mention the special space never before available for wine club members, who get first and sometimes only access to very special single-vineyard bottlings. The most important things havent changed at all, however. The original tasting room was well known for Joes or his folks pouring the wines, and this next iteration of the winery is no different. On any given day, two, three or even all four of the now-owners are on site, pouring the wines. Why change what works? In the same vein, August Briggs has been well known as a producer of excellent wines, and that legacy has continued

chance to pick up something as a reminder of your escape with an impressive array of gift items, including logoed T-shirts, hats, glassware, oils and dipping sauces (samples available), picnic supplies and more, all artfully displayed around the room on upended barrels and custom display racks. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, too mounds of lavender and assorted vibrantly hued flowers delight the eye and fill the air with sweet aromas, while the soothing sounds of a fountain burbles away merrily, providing the background music for your pastoral pleasure. The visitors center is a geodesic dome, with a pentagon shaped tasting bar set up in the middle of the room. Directly above the bar, in the center of the room, a grape motif stained glass window shines a rainbow of color down on the cheerful scene. A marble topped bar against one wall is used for overflow on busy days, and because of its prime location, this tasting room can really get to rockingliterally. The sounds of classic rock provide just the sort of spirit that these wines require. No matter how big the crowd may get, the jovial staff always makes everyone feel like they are not just another customer, but a member of the gang. The visitors center for Napa Cellars and Folie Deux, located at 7481 St. Helena Hwy, Oakville, CA is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 1-800-535-6400 or visit their website at www.napacellars.com or www.folieadeaux.com.

My mother always told me I would marry a poet, and sure enough, my talented husband, Art, created liquid poetry, as Robert Louis Stevenson coined it. This sparked my interest in both forms, drinkable and readable. Who hasnt felt the need for rapturous declarations when sipping a superlative glass of wine? Wine label descriptions certainly try to coax us into a certain level of engagement. Put two and two together, and it was clear that the wine business needed to bring poets to the table! With this exciting idea swimming in my head, we launched the First Ever Judds Hill Poetry Contest in 1999. We solicited poems from family and friends, and were thrilled with the response from Grandma, Sister, Wine Writer and a couple of real, honest to goodness Professional Poets. We entrusted the contest judging to our dear friend Jane Hall, who had developed the poetry publication Coracle, and the seed sprouted. Deciding that Professional Poets were the target candidates for our poetry contest, I started spending our only advertising dollars on ads in poetry journals for each years contest. The exquisite results can be read on our website, www.juddshill.com. Click on Recipes, Art and Video to get to the Poetry folder, and enjoy these many fine poems. When Judds Hill moved from the

Beaulieu Vineyard
Legendary Rutherford Winery Celebrates Heritage in the Newly Opened Museum and History Tour
by Alexandra Charsley
It seems logical that Beaulieu Vineyard would open a new Heritage room to celebrate their long history of producing great wine. As more people are turning back to their roots, they have embraced this tradition and thats what makes them a destination winery. I have been drinking Beaulieu wines for as long as I can remember as their big, bold reds always deliver and happen to be my favorite. Their tasting room experience now offers so much more than tastings and winery exclusive information, but also a piece of their enduring legacy. In 1900, Georges de Latour founded his winery with the vision of creating world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from the exceptional terroir of Rutherford. In the century since, Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become the benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet as well as one of the most collected American wines. The first Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted with grapes from the 1936 vintage by Andr Tchelistcheff, who tasted the wine in barrel and insisted on giving it an independent bottling. Today, this wine is widely considered the standard bearer of fine Rutherford Cabernet, with deep fruit character, silky tannins and impressive aging ability. This legacy honors the marriage between state-of-the-art technology and gentle, traditional winemaking methods, a combination that enhances the expression of their remarkable vineyards. Their new Heritage Room is a tribute to their beginning, their ability to survive during Prohibition, and to become a top producer of rich, classic Napa Valley wines. The original 1885 stone walls house the room and the original beams were preserved. Guests will be the first to see the interesting array of historic pieces they have collected over the years; ranging from original winemaking equipment to sales ledgers from the post-Prohibition era showing that their Private Reserve once sold for $1.01 per bottle. We found this great collection of amazing pieces of our history stored away in an old warehouse. As much as we embrace new technology and innovation, our history is also what sets us apart and will capture the interest of curious visitors. We are very excited to finally be able to invite the public to come see what weve dusted off in our new Heritage Room, Graham Jones, Beaulieu Vineyard Hospitality Manager. This month they celebrate the exciting release of the 2008 vintage of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This marks the first vintage to be made 100 percent out of their new state-of-the-
art winery dedicated solely to Georges de Latour Private Reserve. In 2008 under recommendation from legendary consultant Michel Rolland, Beaulieu Vineyard created a winery within a winery to produce their flagship wine. After more than 60 years of sharing space, BV's Georges de Latour Private Reserve has gone private with the recent completion of its own, new 9,600-square-foot micro winery. Having a brand new state-of-the-art winery is a dream come true for a winemaker. This facility helps me to achieve complex yet balanced wines that reflect the true character of our renowned vineyards, says Director of Winemaking, Jeffrey Stambor. Craig Becker
by Diana Greenwood
Somerston Wine Company is a broad picture type of winery with expansive ideas and sweeping long-term plans. The skys the limit. Much of that viewpoint emanates from the vision and enthusiasm of Craig Becker, part owner, General Manager and Winemaker at Somerston. A jeans and rolled-up sleeves kind of guy with an innate sense of business, Craig is everywhere at once, wearing many hats. But his boots are grounded in 1,628 acres of rich Somerston soil high in the eastern mountains overlooking one of the prettiest valleys around. The sky seems brighter there, the shadows longer, the wildlife a little more content. Craig says his wines are all about the place and you can tell by the sparkle in his voice that he finds this place pretty impressive. Craigs winemaking philosophy is straightforward: Soil-driven, place-driven wines. You dont necessarily feel the hand of the winemaker in Somerston wines, other than maybe the elegance said Craig. I know its clich, but its all about the vineyard. I love to grow grapes. Farming is something Ive been doing since college, and this is my 17th vintage. Wine is a matter of understanding your vineyards, knowing the microclimates and trying to optimize the varietal thats going to grow best in that location. Sometimes its about ripping out a vineyard for the long-term good. Theres a business side to winemaking that I really enjoy but mostly its about growing amazing grapes. Raised in Southern California, Craig craved green pastures and challenging mountain bike trails so he followed the scent of fresh air and braked at Santa Rosa Junior College. He then transferred to UC Davis to study plant physiology and soil science. Craig was inserting genes into plants in Plant Physiology 112 when he met Courtney Siverson, who would later become his wife. Courtney was in the wine program and that first fall, she was offered a harvest position at Robert Mondavi. Although Courtney declined, Craig was intrigued, took the job and continued to work at Mondavi while he finished his degree, staying an extra year to complete the wine program at UC Davis. It was the start of something big but it began on the ground, just the way Craig wanted to learn, boots caked with mud and fingers blistered from picking grapes. Upon graduation in 1997, Craig and Courtney moved to St. Helena and Craig accepted a $12 per hour position at Spring Mountain Vineyard even though he had other, more lucrative offers. Less than nine months out of college, Craig was promoted to winemaker, launching his career. By 1999, word of his reputation as a winemaker deeply involved in both farming and the cellar had spread, and Craig began a vineyard consulting business, Becker Wines and Vineyard Management. In 2000, the college sweethearts got married, living in the valley that inspired Craig daily. Craig left Spring Mountain in 2003 and by 2005, he was juggling ten clients (with much success in single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon) while also making his own wine under the Michael Austin brand, created with a long-time friend, including Highflyer, Craigs personal brand that honors his love of flying. Craig is an accomplished pilot and one has to wonder if theres something about zipping through clouds with a birds-eye view of nature that inspires the wide perspective he brings to Somerston. But it was a Gigondas-style blend called Bad Habit under the
30
Michael Austin brand that brought Craig to Somerston. I wanted to make some Petite Syrah and this property had all three varietals that I needed, especially the Grenache growing on the Priest Ranch property, said Craig. I purchased the fruit and was blown away. I met the founder, Allan Chapman, and over the next couple of years we got to know each other quite well. Were both long-term thinkers and Allan is a great mentor. I made a little bit of bulk wine for him and then in late 2006 he asked for input in the vineyard, which is what I do, and slowly it turned into this wine project. In 2007 we got the winery permit, in 2008 we merged our wine brands. We converted the old barn into the tasting room that opened in 2011. Today, an investor and part-owner, Craig Becker is also Somerstons general manager of the vineyards as well as winemaker, and he oversees the marketing department. In addition, Craig is still making wines for Peacock Family Vineyard, Kelleher in Oakville, Cross Cellars, Balcom Cellars, Priest Ranch and Highflyer. Somehow he still finds time to play with his three little girls, Sydney, Gabriella and Lauren, ages eight, five and three, respectively. Craig and Courtney bought a little dump in St. Helena and turned it into a big, new house that they remodeled alone. The house sits on an acre of farmland where the homeschooled girls roam, picking vegetables from the garden and feeding the twenty little meat birds that Craig and the family are raising. The girls join Craig weekly for lunch at Somerston and are already learning the wonders of nature and the rewards of farming. Plan a visit to the eastern mountain vineyards of Somerston. The
wines are extremely limited production with very little distribution so its well worth the drive on Hwy. 128 past Lake Hennessey, up and up where the skies are bluer and the air is sweet. Taste the first release in the spacious, stylishly renovated barn at 3450 Sage Canyon Road (Hwy. 128), St. Helena. For $50, try all three wines, take an off-road buggy tour of the vineyards and historic property, and enjoy a cheese plate. Call ahead, (707) 967-8414, or visit www.somerstonwineco.com. You can also visit without an appointment and skip the buggy tour, but why would you want to? The skys the limit at Somerston. Somerston wines show the passion and the extreme success of everything weve been trying to do, said Craig. There are three wines, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot (our Proprietary Red Blend), and a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc, all very specific, single block wines. Each demonstrates the expression of this estate that I want people to remember.

Artist Jim Stallings Paints the Russian National Orchestra Fundraiser
Have youve ever been lost in the trance of a live performance, transported to a spiritual place youve never been before? This is precisely the state of metaphysics that happens to Jim Stallings as he translates his personal experience into brilliant color, energy and symbolism on canvas. He is the only artist in this country to paint to a live symphonic orchestra. Recently, during rehearsals of The Russian National Orchestra, Yountville Arts arranged to allow Stallings to, as he states, Live his dream of painting with the most talented orchestra in the world. As a thank you to Yountville for the privilege, he gifted an original 40" x 40" painting created during the rehearsals that will be available for purchase, rotating between five different locations in Yountville during the month of October. Stallings has explored the relationship of music and pure color for his entire artistic career. Deciding early in his life to pursue canvases of whimsy and purity, questions about the relationship of music to fine art led Stallings to paint live on stage with major symphony orchestras, including Long Beach, San Diego, Honolulu and Maui. Painting the sound of music was a defining moment in Stallings career. He has continued to explore the vibration harmony of music, color and the human spirit with world-renowned orchestras and physicists, which have led to several experiences aboard the spaceship Columbus. The painting, Russian National Orchestra IV, began its public tour on October 3 when visitors of the Jessup Cellars tasting room had an opportunity to see the original art and bid on the painting. On October 8 the painting arrives at hope & grace Winery, October 15 at Somerston, October 22 at Hill Family Estates and on October 29 at Cornerstone. For further information, visit the website at www.townofyountville.com/arts, rasart60@aol.com or (707) 696-4420.

Bike into Spring in Bucolic Dry Creek Valley with Dutcher Crossing Winery Proprietor Debra Mathy
Free and open to all levels; 9 am the last Friday of each month
After a long, rainy winter, bike into spring, touring the vibrant scenery of Dry Creek Valley with Debra Mathy, an avid cyclist and proprietor of Dutcher Crossing Winery. A bike is always my first choice of transportation, said Mathy. I would like to invite anyone with a bike to join me on a scenic tour of the northern valley vineyards. Starting at Dutcher Crossing Winery at the juncture of Dry Creek Road and Dutcher Creek Road, Mathy will lead a casual ride through the valleys verdant vineyards from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the last Friday of each month through October 28, 2011. A lover of bicycles since childhood, Debras last gift from her late father was a vintage high-wheel bicycle, showcased on all of Dutcher Crossing Winery wine labels. The icon represents Dutcher Crossing Winerys pursuit of small-lot winemaking, attesting to the guiding power of my fathers imagination, and the timeless qualities of an artisan approach to life, she explained. A replica of the high wheeler graces the tasting room, and on occasion, is actually ridden by Debra to the enjoyment of her guests. For information about the Ride with Deb, contact Debra by

Mayo Family Winery is just that: a third generation family business steeply entrenched in the building of the reputation of Sonoma Valley wines. Henry Mayo is founding patriarch and great-uncle to Courtney whom I greatly enjoyed meeting one day last week in their Glen Ellen Tasting Room. In 1990, Henry planted Laurel Hill vineyards with nothing but Chardonnay. Intending to sell and turn a profit on the land, the grapes turned out to be so good, the rest they say is history. Today, the Mayos have two distinct Tasting Rooms within a short stretch of idyllic Sonoma Highway. In both places, you are sure to meet a Mayo behind the bar. The Kenwood venue specializes in masterful food and wine parings. The second is the Glen Ellen Tasting Room specializing in single vineyard wine. The thing that makes us different [here in Glen Ellen] is that we do two totally different tastings. First is the Premium Tasting for $6 with all the usual suspects: Chardonnay, Cabernet, Zins, Pinots, explained Courtney. The second is the
Adventure Tasting [10 wines for $12]. These are NOT your usual suspects like Carignane, Viognier, Petite Verdot. While I greatly enjoyed the 2007 Laurel Hill Vineyard Chardonnay with notes of fruit, crisp pear and white pepper finish, I was thrilled to tackle the Adventure Tasting. I started off with Mayo the staff favorite, 2006 Sparkling Brut produced from estate grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Made only every three years, its no wonder this sparkler won a solid Gold Medal at the 2010 Sonoma Harvest Fair. Ten solidly impressive wines follow, each with its own distinct flavor profile, mouthfeel, and finish. Winemaker Mike Berthoud certainly knows how to coax great fruit into exquisite wines. Wines to note? Dont miss the 2007 Barbera from nearby Kunde Ranch Vineyard. This is Brians Cuvee for one of Henrys sons. A 100% Barbera from a single vineyard, the Barbera grape may be best known
from the Piedmont region of Italy but here at Mayo, this release has bold pomegranate flavors with hints of herb. Also, dont miss the 2005 Meritage Carlos Cuvee a true Bordeaux classic from 70% Cabernet Sauv, 20% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Mayo has fun with some of their wines and invites in guest winemaking friends or noteworthy chefs to help. You can do that when youre small, explains Courtney. Carlo Caballo, proprietor of nearby Meritage Restaurant and Oyster Bar, weighed in on this production and the resulting wine is rich in structure and boasts strong notes of black cherry, tobacco, and vanilla. Delicious. More than 16 distinct wines await you at Mayo Family Winerys Tasting Room in Glen Ellen. Wines are available until 6:30 p.m. every night a nice touch especially if youre headed to dinner at the Fig Caf, says Courtney. Come on by! Were here.
