TEAMTALK
ANOTHER JOURNEY TO GO
Om Swastiastu... Its unbelievable how fast the time flies! Last month I had a gathering with friends from high school and realized its been 10 years since we graduated in 2001. I am having the same feeling while writing this Team Talk because I feel like I just finished writing the previous months Bali & Beyond Magazines Team Talk, and now here another Team Talk is here already for the October edition. But this is life; we grow up and have to get through the journey. Sometimes we stop in some destinations or another, but the journey goes on until we finally join Mother Earth and get back to what we were made of. For the Balinese, this SeptemberOctober is Sasih Kapat, the fourth moon of its calendar cycle that is also the spring time when flowers bloom and the new life starts. This month is the right time for Balinese to take another step in their life, to engage in a lifetime commitment of two grownups sharing love and life til death do them part. Known for its cultural event, a Balinese wedding ceremony is also very interesting to find out what is the real wisdom behind every activity in the ceremony, in our Craft & Culture story. After those tiring times preparing for the big day, the newlyweds take a break to spend the early sweet moments in the sanctuary. Bali is a favorite honeymoon destination that offers an unforgettable honeymoon experience, and in this edition we bring you ideas so you can best enjoy your honeymoon in the island, where to go and what to do in our Invite & Indulge and FotoFolio, which will show you how wonderful it is to have Nuptials at Nunia. Still talking about a newly unity, our Pondering Point discusses about issues that always happen in mix marriages. As home to multicultural ethnicities, Bali has

many love stories from mixed couples that have blossomed on the island. The number of mixed couples is growing all the time, and thats why we think its necessary to explain about issues that always happen in mix marriages. Its not a detailed explanation; you still need to contact a lawyer, a wedding agency or your embassy to ask about further information regarding this matter. Dont forget to check out what is going on in Bali. Our news features will inform you about the recent activities in the hospitality industry, events, and what has gone on around the island and in Indonesia. In October there are two internationally known celebrations that will be held. The Kuta Karnival will once again bring joy to all in a Celebration of Life, so dont miss the celebration that will take place on along Kuta Beach from October 14-16, while the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival will gather writers and readers together for discussions about Nandurin Karang Awak, or Cultivate the Land Within. The UWRF will run from October 5-9. In Beyond Bali, we take you on a journey to visit Tuban in East Java. The town has been known as the Town of A Thousand Caves, which keeps a story about the glory of Indonesia in the past. But lets also get updated with the towns newest activity. Have you heard about Drum N Bass parties? If you have never heard about them, you can open our Capital Corner feature that will give you some new options to hang out in the city. Well, perhaps we can hang out together sometime! So, to newlyweds, congratulation for your new journey of life! Love isnt always as sweet as chocolate, but with strong commitment and great compassion, we can always solve our problems and at the end, and live happily ever after. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om The Team

as my other brothers and sisters were busy helping outside attending to arriving guests. That day the groom to be, his family and several other relatives came to propose, referred to as ngidih in the local Balinese social-lingo, which roughly can be translated as to ask for or to acquire rather than pop the question. When the man and his family pay a visit to ask for the familys girl this means something for sure. According to Balinese tradition, the visiting party would be received at the bale daja. Both families meet, accompanied by a group of elders and village heads or representatives. They attend as witnesses and moderators if serious matters arise. My cousin was 25 years old at that time. This age is widely referred as the ripe age to get married and start a family. The Balinese girl at 20 years, having finished her studies and in these modern times with a steady occupation, would be deemed socially ready for matrimony and to multiply. They are considered mature enough to carry out the duties and

responsibilities of the adat or traditional social functions. So when they reach that age but still do not marry, they would normally face the same questions over and over again from their community, the typical question of, When? I received my first When? back when I was still 25. At the beginning, I was lucky that having resided in Denpasar, a city with a mix of social backgrounds, heterogenic and which in recent times have become more individualistic, people did not throw out the questions or carry out nosy
inquiries as would be encountered in the village communities. Yet these questions become somewhat inevitable when coming home to my village, be it during the times of temple anniversaries or for other purposes. At times they would make comparisons with other girls of the same age as me who live in the village who indeed mostly marry in their early 20s. Perhaps they never wanted to judge or perhaps they are only expressing care, attention or concern and at the same time anxiety, considering me too busy with

a career and possibly forgetting about my personal and social life. Or perhaps they are concerned about my health, because it is generally thought that risks get higher giving birth at ages over 30. But whatever it may be, the questions are greatly annoying. Anyway, back to my cousin. I remembered that day she appeared significantly nervous. Repetitively saying so and peeking behind the bale door. At the beginning I had no idea how such a talk became such a long discussion whereas both sides should have already well agreed beforehand. But marriages here are apparently not just merely among the two couples and their families, but also between villages together with their
different customs and local traditions. Here it is referred to as desa, kala, patra or place, time, and situation meaning not everything can easily be implemented yet must refer and adhere to this combined trio. That is what was emphasized during the proposition event. They carried out the discussion at the bale daja, a traditional Balinese compound building located at the Balinese geocentric orientation of toward the mountains or equivalent to north among the southern Balinese a place to host guests and conduct formal meetings. We waited until my aunt, my cousins dear mother, arrived knocking on the door. She escorted her daughter to join in the
forum. That day in front of the circle she was formally proposed to, to which she answered, I do. Not long afterwards, they proceeded towards the family temple or sanggah, a place of ancestral worship for each Balinese Hindu family compound in Bali. She requested permission of her ancestors to depart from the family to enter into the family of her future husband. When all prayers were finished that day, the group headed off to the grooms familys house. And it was there that the wedding ceremonies were done. I rode along in one of the cars in the convoy. My cousin and her future husband sat in the leading car with two sugar cane stalks

fastened on the left and right hand sides of the windshield. During the wedding season in Bali (a time when all the good dates for weddings show up on the Balinese calendar), you will see many vehicles in a convoy with such similar attributes traversing the roads. Many houses will be seen decorated with their gates having banners bearing Om Swastyastu across them, a wishful greeting expressing peace within the heart. The Balinese usually marry during the Balinese tenth month or sasih kedasa (which usually coincides with the Gregorian months of March to April) or the Balinese fourth moon (usually September to October). The months are based on the Balinese calendar cycle. The tenth moon, Kedasa, also hints at the word kedas, which means clean and holy, thus, blessed month to start a consecrated relationship. Meanwhile, kapat is the fourth moon
and usually accepted as the spring time in Bali when flowers all bloom. Thus it is believed as the month of blossoming and blessings for marriage and worship. That day when we arrived at the house of the bride, she switched again into a more decorated outfit. We call this payas agung, with high golden flower ornaments. She looked radiant, more beautiful and fulsome than ever before. The ceremonies commenced when the pedanda, the high priest who was to bless the two in holy matrimony, arrived. For a while they followed on with the processions that all aimed to sanction the marriage with the community, the underworld, the ancestors, and the whole universe as their rightful witnesses. The event came to a close with delicious treats, snacks and drinks distributed among those who attended. Usually the schedule would continue with a wedding reception straight afterwards,
or wealthier families would opt for a reception held elsewhere like at a function building, hotel, or restaurant. The event would be attended by the whole family, colleagues, and neighbors of both sides. It could be imagined how many invitations need to be sent out and invitees to be tended to at such an event. Maintaining a smile and continuously shaking hands and exchanging greetings with so many people, sets in contrast to the fact that the bride and bridegroom, together with their parents and families, frequently must skip meals or must endure the lengthy hours under such heavy costumes and makeup. Well, coming under the spotlight and being a celebrity is not an easy task even for just a day! Several years had passed and the time had come for my own turn, as a Balinese bride. Yet my position slightly differed from where my cousin had been. While she had waited to be proposed to, I was the one who actually did the proposing.
On this happy day, the bride and groom to be have to follow rituals in the wedding ceremony. In every ritual there is wisdom for them to learn in hope to have a long and merry marriage.

Picture at left shows a Balinese bride with her Payas Agung
The Balinese in general adopt a patrilineal system, where a male must continue the familys lineage. Therefore a male bears an important status among Balinese families. But there is no need to worry, as if a couple has no boy to become their heir, the daughter may stay at home and ask for a partner to enter her family. It was a day of thrills. Happiness filled the air as in just moments to come. A loving pair is to be united. Yet also crossing our minds were the responsibilities and the heavy loads to be placed upon our shoulders, from family duties, our jobs, the customs, ceremonies, and so forth. Several days before the big day I was extremely busy helping out with the ceremonial preparations, starting with asking guidance from wise men for good dates, preparing the intricate banten flower offerings as well as the preliminary offerings, designing invitations and distributing them as well as a load of other errands. On the big day I woke up very, very early and found that the tukang payas or makeup artist was already waiting. I donned the golden outfit with golden flower ornaments. I wore this outfit all day long, starting from the rituals up to the reception that continued to late at night. Other brides get the chance to change their attire in the afternoon to lighter and less ornate outfits, but others dont get the slightest time because guests keep on arriving. Families, friends and parents friends, colleagues from the workplace, new and old, so many arrive to witness the event, so many wishes and words of blessings are exchanged.
The night was no longer young when the last guest bade us farewell. Then came the time to clean up and take a good rest. The honeymoon might have to wait until the day after, as not many couples get to enjoy theirs straight after. Routines and all that come with it immediately kick back into the scene. Meanwhile, looking back I realize that I have escaped the annoying inquiry of When? But another annoyance soon enters the scene, Whens the first child coming? Oh well, keeping a positive mind, they must surely be putting a lot of attention and concern towards us, arent they? So Happy weddings to all those who have recently tied the knot, as well as to those who are looking forward to that special day of a lifetime. Many will be newlyweds soon, because between the end of September until the end of October, is after all sasih Kapat! Text by Ni Luh Dian Purniawati Photos by Putu Eka, Murdani Usman

As home to multicultural ethnicities, Bali has many love stories from mixed couples that have blossomed on the island. But it seems that mixed couples still take a long period to have equal rights under the law of Indonesia.
t was just a weeklong holiday, but Michaels heart was left forever in Bali. He met a stunning Indonesian girl and has been in love with her ever since. They maintained a long distance relationship for a while and then he decided to spend more time with her in Bali. After a while being with her, during sunset time at their favorite beach,
provide a letter that states they are single and have no other obligation. Foreigners can get the statement letter from their countrys consulate or embassy in Indonesia. If the bride/groom is widow/widower or divorced, they have to be able to provide a letter of divorce or death certificate. Getting married in Indonesia is unique. It seems easy but it can sometimes be complicated. Most couples think that they will be stuck with lots of paperwork, but its not true. There is one more principal that needs to be agreed upon before the couple decides to get married. Indonesia may not be a country which laws are based on a religion, but religion has a big role in the country. There are five religions that people are allowed to have and every citizen has to have a religion. This is the thing that sometimes becomes a major problem for a marriage in Indonesia, not only for a foreigner who marries an Indonesian but sometimes also for Indonesian brides and grooms who have different beliefs and religions. All marriages that take place in Indonesia must be of the same religion. Usually this is done in a religious ceremony, and then later will be recorded legally. In this case somebody has to convert their beliefs so that the marriage is legitimate, religiously and legally. But take note that a mixed marriage has to be registered legally, and its illegal to have a religious wedding ceremony without having it registered by the government. But after being legally declared husband and wife, a mixed couple has to face other difficulties to have a happy life together in Indonesia. First, the foreigners have to face the fact that their stay permit is very limited. They are not entitled to work with their marriage stay permit visa even though they live in the country. If they wish to work, the working permit visa has to be sponsored by the company who hires them. A new regulation has actually
Michael went down on his knee and said the once-in-a-lifetime words that all girls want to hear, Will you marry me? Well, it might sound tacky but its not just a story from a novel. Instead, this kind of romance happens very often in Bali. Millions of people visiting Bali fall in love with the beauty of the island, and some adore its people. As home to multicultural ethnicities where people with different nationalities come as tourists or as expatriates and interact with the locals, Bali has many love stories from mixed couples that have blossomed on the island. It seems that the number of mixed couples is growing all the time, whether the couples reside on the island or in another country. But love isnt always as sweet as chocolate and the journey to a happy marriage isnt as smooth as silk. Mixed marriage becomes an interesting issue for discussion especially here in Indonesia. When people from two different cultures combine to become one, there are differences to tolerate and each person has to accept it as well as to learn to blend in to the other culture. They have to understand each others customs, life rhythms, and values, as well as norms in the big family and surrounding society. The couple often has culture shock when they start living together, and it takes time to get used to each other. Before the wedding is held, the bride and groom have to

changed this law such that foreigners who have been married to an Indonesian for two years can now work in the country, but its not yet been announced when this regulation will be imposed. Secondly, if the couple wants to buy a property after they get married, for example a house or land, the property is entitled to belong to both. Each has the same right to the property. As we know foreigners are not allowed to own property in Indonesia, so if the Indonesian spouse dies the foreigner who inherited the property can only use it or rent it for a very limited time without having the right to own it. The foreigner has to give the property to the Indonesian government 1 year after theyve started to own it, unless they have a pre-nuptial agreement that states that the wealth earned during the marriage is entitled as personal/ private wealth, not belonging to both. In this case, the wealth can be passed on to the children of the couple or to the family, depending on what the letter states. A few months ago there was a rumor that all foreigners who want to marry an Indonesian have to provide USD 50,000 as a deposit to the bride/groom, which will be kept by the Marriage Department. It is said that the money can protect Indonesians
from contract marriages and give them a future if the foreigner leaves her/him. This rumor was spread in the mass media in Indonesia and caused some confusion amongst mixed couples that wanted to tie the knot in the very near future. And again, its hard to get an explanation for this as there is no official website or trustful source that can explain this clearly. Although its confusing, at least mixed couples can now be happy as their mixed child is now entitled to have two nationalities until theyre 18 and then choose which nationality they want to have. Well, it seems that it still takes a long time period for mixed couples to have equal rights under the laws of Indonesia. But love is the greatest energy, so its not impossible that in the end mixed couples can raise a family and live happily ever after until death do them part in this beautiful country. Before the monsoon season takes over and rain pours down on the island, a list of festivals is about to start. This October, Bali will celebrate the festive month with the Kuta Karnival and the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival.
LIGHT UP THE WORLD
The tag line A Celebration of Life became the hope to start a new and promising journey to revive Bali as a holiday destination for everyone. The second Bali Bomb tragedy in 2005 didnt dampen the spirit to carry on. The carnival still continued to commemorate and show the commitment to fight against human violence and terrorism attacks. This year, the Kuta Karnival receives the Indonesia Travel & Tourism Award 2010/2011 in the Best Indonesia Leading Tourism Event category from the ITTA Foundation. As the work of the local Kuta community has become an internationally recognized event

with major coverage from television and newspapers from across the globe, the Kuta Karnival has become an inspiration to organize similar events as promoting tourism in Indonesia. This 9th annual Kuta Karnival will Light Up the World starting on Friday, October 14 from 3:00-5.30 p.m. attended by local government officials and community leaders of Kuta. Indonesias Ministry of Tourism and Culture Jero Wacik will officially open the event. After the opening there will be performances such as traditional Balinese dances and a colossal Kecak dance, a Sunset Beach Parade along Kuta Beach starting at 4 p.m. from Pura Segara to Halfway beach in front Benesari Street, and its symbolic Paddle for Peace that invites all surfers to paddle out to the sea and form a circle. Starting right from the beginning of the event, people can join the Kite Festival and taste the culinary offerings of the islands best restaurants, hotels, and pubs at the Food Festival. list of creative and fun-filled activities within a week in the Sanur area that involves Sanurs hotels, community, tourism industry and government of Denpasar. The National Flori & Flora Week 2011 is the 4th regularly held national-scale horticultural exhibition event of an international standard. Many plants and flora will be displayed as well as vegetables, fruits and herbs. The event was initiated by the Indonesian Department of Agriculture. Usually Sanur Village Festival is held during August-September, but because there will be three festivals merging this year and it needs a larger area, this 6th Sanur Village Festival will take place in November at the Matahari Terbit Beach in Sanur. The International Kite Festival that was held in August this year was actually a part of the Sanur Village Festival. But because the wind at Sanur shore wont be as strong during November, the International Kite Festival started earlier. history. A local village resident said that the cave was used by the Mataram Kingdoms army to hide from the attack of the Majapahit Kingdom. There were bones and armaments found in the cave during its discovery. In the early Islamic era in Indonesia, Gua Akbar was used by the early Muslim messengers to meditate and broadcast their religion to the early converters. The history of Tuban, the arrival of Chinese, and the story of Muslim messengers are illustrated on the wall at the caves entrance. Before the Government took over, Gua Akbar was considered haunted by the local residents. They used the cave as a landfill to throw their trash in. But soon after it was renovated in 1996, the cave becomes one of the most popular tourist attractions in the town. An entrance ticket costs you less than Rp. 3,000. There are several facilities and

town is on north calcareous area of East Java, about 100 km from Surabaya, the capital city of the province of East Java. Tuban was the busiest port during the era of the Majapahit Kingdom, and played an important role in this ancient kingdom. It also became a gateway for Arabic Muslim merchants to enter Java. And few days ago I made a plan to visit some tourist attractions in Tuban, so I googled to find out what places I must visit and then was struck by Tubans promotional tag line. It is said that Tuban is a town of 1,000 caves, although there are actually 56 caves that have been discovered so far. From all the caves in
pond full of fresh water fish and three halls that are often used as a resting area for visitors who want to take a break after a long walk. The three halls inside are believed to have been used as a meeting point for the Muslim messengers, and you can see a stone that looks like a podium in one of the halls. The path I followed took me deeper into the cave. As I walked further inside, I heard the river flowing and felt some water drops touch my head. The river is part of an underground river that is believed to be connected with Gua Ngerong and A mosque built inside the cave of Pondok Pesantren Al Maghrobi ends in the North Sea of Java. There is also a water spring named Sendang Tirta Merta, which means that this cave gave hope and prosperity to the residents. The shops on the way to the cave, so it doesnt make you feel like you are going to an ancient cave. But you will be amazed as soon as you reach the entrance. As you step down the stairs and enter the cave you will be greeted by the smell of the bats that hang on the wall and ceiling. But the smell will disappear after you go a few meters further inside. The stalactites and stalagmites in Gua Akbar are not so dramatic like its neighboring cave, the Maharani Cave in Lamongan, but Gua

Akbar has its own beauty. The cave has beautiful and colorful lighting in every spot and corner that makes it not too scary looking. I could not stop adoring the cave and feel very safe although I walked in by myself. The cave is very clean and very neat, which means that the government does really take care of it. A paved route with iron gates guides the way and assures tourists safety and comfort while exploring the cave. Going further inside, you will find a
cave also has a lot of ornaments, halls and undiscovered alleys that are interesting and very historical.
A HOME OF GOD
There was a soldier who heard a whisper in his dream that he should buy 3 hectares of land in the Kedungombo district Tuban on 1 Syuro 2001. The land was abandoned, dry and very calcareous, so nobody would ever dream to build a house on it. But this soldier bought it anyway and was surprised
when he found caves below the land. Although a conflict with local government ensued, as they wanted to take over the cave found on his land, the soldier named KH Subhan Mubarok later renovated the cave and changed its function to be a religious boarding dorm and a mosque. He also built a miniature of Cube in Mecca inside the cave, placed colorful lamps in every spot and carved many wise sayings on the cave wall in Arabic, ancient Java writing, and also in Indonesian. The result is amazing, as this three year-old dorm became the first underground dorm in Indonesia, although it cost Rp. 1.4 billion. Surrounded by a one-meter high wall, nobody would think that behind is the Pondok Pesantren Perut Bumi Al Maghrobi (Underground Dormitory and Classroom). 14 meters from the gate, you will be taken down into a totally new world. No cameras are allowed and you have to take off your shoes or sandals, as this area is sacred. The biggest space is used as a mosque
and is called the Gua Putri Ayu, which is named upon the spirit who stays inside the cave. The mosque can hold 600 people and is decorated beautifully. When you enter this mosque you feel like are entering a palace. The room is very bright and gleaming with strong pillars and colorful ambience. Besides this, there are several other rooms in the dorm and also some areas that have not yet been renovated. There is a room with thick carpet near Gua Putri Ayu that is used to welcome VIP guests, and behind this there are plenty of smaller caves that are used for meditation. It is believed that earlier Muslim messengers also did their meditation in these caves. Everyday KH. Subhan Mubarok receives many visitors who ask for his blessing, and this dorm survives from the donations given by these visitors. The cave has become a school for students who want to study Islam and it becomes a home for them, thanks to everybody who has given donations. But although this is not Bat, sh and turtle that stay at Gua Ngerong.

is little bit difficult, so to find it you should take somebody that knows exactly where it is, but you can always count on the people you meet along the way and they will surely guide you in the right direction. The gate is located right on the side of the road and the parking lot is limited. People say that Gua Ngerong is rarely visited by people, but at the time I visited it was full with people and their families because it was a public holiday. Just like Gua Akbar, as I got closer I smelled the bat
urine that meant that the cave was close. And when I arrived at the entrance I was surprised with what I saw; thousands of bats hanging on the cave entrance wall! Unbelievable! I felt a little bit disappointed though as it is forbidden to enter the cave. Well, you cannot enter anyway because there is a river flowing in front of the caves mouth and there is no pathway to pass. It is said that there is poison gas inside the cave and of course, more and more bats. Bats are not the only animals youll find; there are turtle and fish (Puntius Javanicus) in the caves pond. Everybody said that the fish in the cave are numerous, but I only saw a few fish swimming around the pond, probably because there were a lot of people visiting at that time and everybody was throwing kapok seeds into the pond, scaring the fish. It is believed that the turtles and the fish are the reincarnations of the angels that come and take a bath on the river, so it is forbidden to eat the fish. Text and photos by Intan Tanjung

compositions), with heavy bass and subbass lines. Drum and bass began as an offshoot of the United Kingdom rave scene in early 1990s. Over the first decade of its existence, the incorporation of elements from various musical genres led to many permutations in its overall style. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, growing nightclubs and the overnight outdoor event culture gave birth to a new electronic music style called Rave Music, which much like hip-hop combined with sampled and syncopated beats or breakbeats that took samples from a wide range of different musical genres, and sometimes
from music, dialogue and effects from films and television programs. But rave music tends to feature stronger bass sounds and a faster tempo (127 to over 140 beats per minute) than early house music. This subgenre was known as hardcore rave, but since the beginning of 1992 some musical tracks that are made up of high-tempo break beats with a heavy bass line and samples of older Jamaican music were referred to jungle techno and later just called jungle. This kind of music later became recognized as a separate musical genre popular at raves and on Pirate Radio in

the jungle scene in Indonesia, so that all junglists can gather and enjoy the music they love. Along the way, Javabass was reformed and modified, and since 2005 they have added new DJ members Sketch, Random and Celsius, and MC Drift. For more than 10 years now Javabass has made a mark in the Indonesian underground dance scene that before was only done at trance and house parties. Now drum n bass parties are held each year, the earlier were Junglably Loud and Artcore Nation til the era of up-to-date sessions like Phunktion and Therapy. The Javabass itself had some impact on certain groups of people from different cities prompting them to form similar types of DJ/MC clusters that consequently
broadened the scope of Indonesias drum n bass scene. Collaborations soon followed and resulted in parties like Animated Arena, Heavyweight Soundclash, Back2back Session, Liquid Drumz, and Ignition. Javabass has also worked with respected labels/organizers from other music genres, like Future, Dub Container, Echosystem, Original Naro and Nepathya in bringing some of the biggest raves and international DJs to Indonesia, namely Higher Level, Rhythm Unity, Destination One, Jakarta Movement. One international DnB DJ is Frenzic, who played in the biggest rave event in Jakarta (Jakarta Movement) in 2004. Recent members take the event to another level by creating a monthly night

event that has become the longest running serial event in Indonesia. Phunktion has run for some 8 odd years and has become one of the most anticipated and IT drum n bass party in Jakarta. Many new breed and respected guests from South East Asia have come to grace the decks at Phunktion, displaying their own menacing sets and sounds that are characterized by the unique blend of drum n bass. Javabass succeeded in kicking-off a live performance at the once muchhyped Thursday Riot at PARC that was a melting pot of punters from various backgrounds in the underground scene. Phunktions residency at PARC came to an end around December of 2005 as it succumbed in its battle against bigger,
newer and shinier clubs around town. Nonetheless, the party never stopped and kept moving from one club to another before eventually settling down at two venues, DBarons & Marley. Javabass has been trying to spread Drum n Bass throughout Indonesia for over 10 years now, and finally the Indonesian Dance community recognized it with a Special Dedication Award during REDMA 2009. DJ Jerome, who was also the promoter and producer, is one of the original Indonesian Drum n Bass pioneers in the scene who started his career by spinning in the Chill Room of the legendary PARKIT club back in 1996. As a drum n bass spectrum specialist, he has won Best DnB DJ at the 2004 Hard Rock

HEALTH&MEDICAL
Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace uids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
