In my case, my family is Puerto Rican, and “almuerzo” was used exclusively for
lunch, and “comida” was only used by my paternal grandmother when
mentioning dinner or calling us to the table, “La comida está lista”. On my
mother’s side, they would only use “cena” for the evening meal.
So typically, we would have “desayuno”, (breakfast), early in the morning
between 6 am and 7 am, then merienda around 9:30 a.m. (snack time or
coffee break if you’re working) “almuerzo” between 11:30 am and 1 pm, and
then another “merienda” around 3pm or another coffee break if working. Then
you would have your dinner. “comida/cena” between 5 pm and 6 pm. (In our
house we ate at 5 pm on the dot, unless people were working or still at
school, then they would have to eat on their own.) Some people in my family
have yet another “merienda” between 7 pm and 9 pm. C
