An enigmatic Glyptodontidae (Mammalia, Cingulata) from Northwestern Argentina
AE. ZURITA', D. ROISINBLIT’, J. CAJAL’, and C. MILLAN*
Glyptodontidae constitutes one of the most conspicuous clade of Cenozoic mammalians from
South America. However, Neogene and Pleistocene records and knowledge of Glyptodontidae
in northwestern Argentina are scarce compared with other areas (¢g, Pampean and
Mesopotamian regions). We report and describe the second record of a Glyptodontidae in the
Jujuy Province (being the first belonging to Cramiathlastus xibiensis Acias, Alonso, and Malanca).
‘The material, represented by a well preserved dorsal carapace and caudal armor (caudal rings +
caudal tube), was exhumed from the locality of Calahoyo’ (22°01’43''S, 65°51’14"), Santa
Catalina, Jujuy Province. The dorsal carapace shows a convex dorsal profile, similar to that of
Eosclerocalyptus C. Ameghino and C. xibiensis. ‘The exposed surface of the osteoderms presents
an evident “rosette” pattem, with a central figure surrounded by a single row of up to 12
peripheral figures, whereas C. xabiensis exhibits up to 17 peripheral figures. The caudal tube
measures 430 mm long and exhibits a similar ornamentation pattern although the peripheral
figures are much less developed. The osteoderms of the most proximal part of the caudal tube
show, in dorsal view, a somewhat similar morphology compared to the “Hoplophorinae”
Palachoplophorini. In lateral view there are five lateral figures (three in C. xtbiensi, similac in
morphology to that of Neosvlerocabpius Paula Couto and Eosckrocabptus, in turn, the caudal rings
show no differences compared to Eosclerocabpptus. In summary, the general morphology of this
specimen resembles that of some known Pliocene Glyptodontidae, but further studies are
necessary to establish its taxonomic allocation.
