Bubu
Hello Jazz Guitarists! Heres a tune I hope you will really enjoy. Its a 12 bar blues in F called Bubu. Its pretty amazing - you know, writing tunes (for me) is a lot like meeting an old friend, as opposed to a scientist in the lab approach to composition. Basically its a process of uncovering a little melody that makes you slap your forhead and say Of Course! whether you are the person who wrote it or not! Anyhow, I was house sitting for a friend years ago and practicingin her house. As soon as I found the germ for the tune - (the opening riff) her dog Bubu freaked out and started barking. I figured What the hell... Bubu - this ones for you. Writing a jazz tune should be like composing any other melody. In my humble (but strong) opinion a true melodic germ is something that resounds deep in us. So whether its classified as jazz, classical pop (some tunes) does not matter so much. If it has that thing - that true melodic drive, its the real thing. One of the tests is can you sing it back? If a melody lacks a memorable singable quality - its for real. If I cant sing a tune back the day after I wrote it - it is just BS!!! I brougt the tune to my recording session and bang! - we were off to a swingin start. Also, if you play 7- string guitar, listen close to the tone on the bass that Bob Cranshaw gets. Listen to the lines - and thats the best 7 string guitar walking bass line lesson youll ever get. Listen to the other guys too - Ray Moscas ride cymbal and Mike Longos perfect comping. It dont get any better! I hope you enjoy this tune, and maybe youll even want to play it on one of your own gigs! Id be honored. - Adam Copyright 2002 Adam Rafferty, All Rights Reserved http://www.adamrafferty.com
