Sept 2011

Managers Corner
And a great September to all. We broke a record. This was the hottest August in Albuquerque recorded history, (KRQE News) and hopefully this month wont be a repeat. We can look forward to things like the New Mexico State Fair and in October comes our world famous Balloon Fiesta! Even if you dont get to go to that one, you might be able to stand outside and see some of them floating by from time to time. Just so you know, I will be on vacation from September 7 until September 27. Debbie will be filling in for me. Feel free to stop by and say HI to her. This is a rather unusual situation and I wanted to bring it up to our residents. I have received several complaints of someone knocking in the middle of the night and disturbing the peaceful enjoyment of the premises. This is a clear violation of your the lease and its not being considerate of your neighbors, either. Just a reminder to clean up after yourselves when you use the laundry room or walk your pet. We all appreciate it. Weve been doing a great job so far...lets keep it up! Perla Orona

You know, this makes my third newsletter for Solar Villas and this one is perhaps the most interesting to our small group of readers. A bit different since our Pet Talk column has been bumped for this month in order to give credit where its due; to the Junior Volunteers. I do have one photo that wouldnt fit on Page 4, so I wanted to include it here. This is a photo of Jacob Trujillo receiving a Worlds Best Volunteer certificate and a small gift at the August 2011 Mobile Food Pantry. Congratulations Jacob. He was giving out pastries during the August food pantry and did a fantastic job.

I had a good time doing one-on-one computer training last month. Since it doesnt look like its going to be an actual class (though I could be wrong), Im going to refer to this as computer help. Many of you know the basics, but if you dont and want to get set up with a Gmail account and perhaps Facebook so you can stay in touch with family (sharing photographs and family and friend news)...along with actually seeing the newsletter in color (yes, the photos are in color), come like Solar Villa News on Facebook and join our family, share local news, get a heads up on goings on...or whatever. Love to see you there!

MOBILE FOOD PANTRY I am happy to announce that we received another grant to continue the Mobile Food Pantry for another year! This comes at a good time when we are continuing to see food prices spike. We have a little change starting in September. The Food Pantry will be held on the 2nd floor. Once again I am suggesting to all residents who get a delivery that you try to come to the 2nd floor for your food items. The time it takes to sign in and go thru the line is very quick; about 5 minutes per person. In this way YOU get to select which food items you want rather than have them selected for you. If you are unhappy with the items selected for you, you may exchange them at the pantry after the last floor has gone thru the line. Mobile Pantry will be held on September 8th. Schedule is as follows: 3:30-3:40 3rd Floor; 3:40-3:50 - 4th Floor; 3:50-4:00 1st Floor; 4:00-4:10 2nd Floor. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO COME AT YOUR ASSGNED TIME. ROADRUNNER SENIOR BOXES Since I am now in charge of the Roadrunner Senior Boxes, I have been informed that I can no longer hold boxes for more than a week in my office. Please mark your calendars for the day Roadrunner Senior Boxes are delivered to Solar Villa. If a box is not picked up within a week of the distribution then I will have to return the box to Roadrunner. If you miss two consecutive pick-ups, your name is automatically withdrawn from Roadrunner Senior Boxes and I give your spot to someone else. SENIOR FREEBIES Surfing thru the web I found a site for Senior Freebies and I also came across a long list of businesses who offer discounts for seniors. Some ages of seniors start at 55 or 60, but lots of places offer discounts that they do not post. But it was posted on the internet!! Please stop by the office for your copy of the list of merchants who offer these discounts.

CALVARY OF ALBUQUERQUE Are you aware that Calvary of Albuquerque on 4001 Osuna Rd. NE does a Food Pantry every Monday night from 6pm to 8pm? You are allowed to go 5 times throughout the year. You can get a bag of food and pick out some clothing items. For more information please call: 344-0880. LUNCH BUNCH We will be starting the Lunch Bunch again on September 26th beginning at 11:30am on the 2nd floor. This will be a Soup Day and I will be making some Chicken & Rice soup. If you would like to bring your creation to share that would be nice! You can also help by bringing some crackers, bread, or other goodies. This month we will have a guest speaker, Billi Grossman, Registered Dietician. She will discuss Senior Malnutrition. I was pretty lucky to book her for our event because she is in high demand and well worth it! Please, please mark your calendars for this informative luncheon. Also, if you are interested in learning to knit or already know how to knit, we will be doing instruction and knitting class right after Ms. Grossman speaks. If you cant make this event, you are welcome to attend the Lunch Bunch at Brentwood on Sept. 19th, at 11:30. See me for directions to Brentwood. COMPUTER HELP We will continue to have Gil Davis help out with questions you might have about using your computer or using the various programs on your computer. The next date for Solar Villa is Sept. 8th from 11am to 1pm. Please sign up at the my office or call me for a time, 974-7777. A Letter to the Editor

The Grief and Loss Support Group will now be called, Winter Solstice Meeting. Of course, we will meet in all seasons every second and fourth Tuesday at 2PM in Apt 319. I have not thought until now of giving my resume beyond the loss of a child eight months ago. In 1988, I earned a certificate in Volunteer Hospice from Hilltop Hospital and Hospice in Grand Junction, Colorado. I was licensed as a Psychiatric Tech for ten years by the State of Colorado where I worked for five years with developmentally disabled in both group home and institutional settings. I served on the Mesa Colorado Mental Health Board of Directors in Colorado, and was voted, Consumer (a person with mental illness) of the year on my very first year. I also did reception work, speaking, writing, and advocacy. When I returned to Albuquerque to help my sister care for our mother, I served on several more boards including the founding board of Newlife Homes. I also spoke to a police cadet class on dealing with the mentally ill, something I would like to do again. I attended The Sunshine Group, a group incorporated with the state for anyone diagnosed with a mental illness. That lasted about seven years and met weekly. Some really great people helped me through those years. With our new group, Ive found that I am already learning more from those who attend than I might pretend to teach. I hope you will come. Mickey Hughes PS. Your pancakes were better than I-HOP. IHOP doesnt use the yolk.

YARD SALE As long as the weather holds up we will have another yard sale. So get your treasures ready to put up for sale on Sept. 16th. As before, start up time is on your own but make sure to clean up by 4pm. LOW COST DENTAL CARE On Sept. 29th from 11:00 to 12:00 noon, Vera Broten from Sierra Dental will be here to discuss a low cost dental plan that is offered by Sierra Dental. You wont want to miss this informative meeting, especially since getting dental work is so expensive. This plan comes to you at a much lower cost than many other dental plans. GLAM DAY Be sure to come to this event to be held on Sept. 14th from 1:00 to 3:00 on the 2nd floor. Both men and women are invited to join a professional hairdresser who is offering his services for free haircuts! What a bargain, right? A volunteer and myself will also be doing nails. So come by and enjoy someone pampering you for a change!! Haircuts will be on a first come, first serve basis. VOLUNTEERS I cant express myself in as many ways as I would like to about the importance of Volunteers in our society and in the Solar Villa and Brentwood Gardens communities. The efforts of the volunteers are needed and are valuable to make our functions work. I thank them all and I would also like to thank the many younger student volunteers who come to help at Roadrunner and Mobile Food Pantry at both Brentwood Gardens and Solar Villa. Lets give a big thanks to Robbie Trujillo, Jacob Wilkinson, Skyler King, Angelica King, Valerie and Kristina Martinez, Mazzy Cleary, and Max Hughes! These young volunteers are our future generation and their efforts at this young age are remarkable and appreciated.
