Synopsis

Rationale for City & Guilds 2377 One-Day Course

This City & Guilds course provides an overview of the latest edition of the IET Code of Practice for InService Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment. The Code of Practice (COP) provides guidance on the inspection and testing of electrical appliances, luminaires, IT equipment supplied by a plug and socket, and similar equipment connected by a flexible cord. The COP is written both for administrators with responsibility for electrical maintenance (who may have little technical knowledge) and the staff who carry out the inspections and tests. This course prepares candidates for the multiple-choice exam for 2377 certification. The exam comprises a 30-question multi-choice test lasting 1 hour. It is set and marked by City & Guilds, but run by Trans-Euro Engineering Services Ltd in Towcester.

Objectives
The objectives of the course are for the participants to: Understand the legal requirements for maintenance of electrical equipment. Be able to select suitable frequencies of maintenance and know the requirements for record keeping and training of personnel. Know the construction and classification of electrical equipment. Be able to identify different types of test equipment. Be capable of inspecting electrical equipment and identifying potential faults. Know the tests to perform on different classes of equipment.

Administrative Arrangements
The course and the exam are normally held at Trans-Euros premises at 186 Watling Street, Towcester, but the location can be at client premises by prior arrangement. Normal times of attendance are from 09:00 to 17:00, with a 45-minute break for lunch. Depending on the number of delegates on the course, the online exam may not be complete until 18:00. Refreshment breaks are taken as necessary during the mornings and afternoons. Towcester is centrally placed and is conveniently accessible by road, rail and air. Accommodation and parking are easily arranged. Full details are available from the Course Secretary. Participants with special needs should advise the Course Secretary 21 days before the start of the course.

Safety Warning
Note that the Trans-Euro emergency assembly area is the Magistrates Court car park, across the main A5 Watling Street. This is a busy trunk road therefore extreme caution is required.

2377-12 Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment Syllabus NB Candidates are required, before undertaking the examination, to demonstrate an ability to inspect and test an item of Class 1 equipment and correctly complete Forms VI.1 and VI.2. Form VI.1 is the Equipment Register. Form VI.2 is the Equipment Formal Visual and Combined Inspection and Test Record. Candidates may use their own instruments.

Equipment Construction State the different types of equipment, together with their form of construction and classification marks. Identify how electric shock can occur through lack of basic protection or inadequate fault protection. State how equipment construction provides protection against electric shock. State the effect of equipment flexible leads and cord sets resistance on disconnection times under earth fault conditions. State the need for RCD protection for certain items of equipment.
