National Diploma in sport Assessment objectives and Assessment Tasks

Assessment Objective (AO) 1 Assessment objective description Describe the structure and functions of the human skeleton Task To be completed Pupils are asked produce a leaflet for a group of young trainees at a large football club. The leaflet must aim to be clear and educate the trainees so that they have a greater understanding of their bodies with particular focus on the skeletal system. Using their chosen sport as an example pupils are required to produce a coaching booklet describing the joints being used during the preparation/execution and recovery stages of the skill. Pupils are required to describe the type of movement occurring during all three phases for at least 4 of the major skills used in that particular sport. Pupils are assessed via a video question and answer session. Pupils will be required to describe the structure and function of the muscles used during a simple skill from their chosen sport. Pupils must comment on the agonist/antagonist and the type of contraction and include examples of joint types and speed of contraction if possible.

Classify joints and illustrate the range of movement at specific joints during sporting activity

Describe the structure and function of the muscular system in relation to sport

Describe the structure and function of the heart and vascular system in relation to sport and exercise

Describe the structure and function of the respiratory system in relation to sport and exercise

Analyse differing methods of energy production and apply knowledge to practical examples

Pupils are required to produce a video presentation in the gym describing the structure and function of the heart using a practical example. Pupils are required to comment on both the structure of the heart but also the process of cardiac cycle and gaseous exchange at the cells. Pupils are required to produce a PowerPoint presentation to the group describing the structure and function of the respiratory system in relation to a chosen activity. Pupils must describe both external and internal respiration and give values in terms of VO2 max and vital capacity for athletes and the chosen sport. Pupils are given the opportunity to act as a professional coach. They must devise, plan, coach and then evaluate training sessions aimed at improving the three energy systems. Then in a written report pupils must include the session plan and evaluation and provide a detailed description of the physiological implications of their three training sessions.
