GENERAL APPLICATION WARNING: People with a heart pacemaker or similar medical device must avoid direct contact with the Search Head while the system is in operation. WARNING: Unit Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and the Program Of Instruction (POI) ALWAYS take precedence over the information contained in this manual. WARNING: Do not use the Gizmo for locating magnetically influenced munitions. WARNING: Do not touch explosive ordnance with the Gizmo Search Head. CAUTION: The Metal Detector detects metals only. Each audio signal may indicate a mine with metal content or an UXO. Mines containing only small metal parts with very special metallic alloy may eventually not be detected. Mines without any metal part will not be detected. P PPR - Before starting detection work, perform the Operational Checks (see Section 3.7.2). 6 be ee Detector, or Vallon VMCI, is designed for the Sea i o metal parts in mines, ammunition, or explosive nance in the ground and in shallow water. The Search Head Must be moved above the ground in such a way that obstacles like Brass, stones, branches, or explosive ordnance are not touched. In the case of specified normal operation, the Gizmo is completely safe to use and represents no health hazard to humans. However, People with a heart pacemaker, or a similar medical device in or on their body, must avoid direct contact with the Search Head while the system is in operation. The Gizmo detects all kinds of metal, e.g. iron, steel, gold, copper, brass, silver, etc. Ease of operation combined with a rigid and compact mechanical design facilitate transportation and detection work in impassable areas. Along with its digital signal processor, the Gizmo operates on the principle of an advanced pulse-field, specially improved by Vallon. The Gizmo has operational modes specifically designed to detect targets buried in mineralized soils (like laterite, magnetite, and magmatite), as well as in shallow water (salt and fresh water), and under the electromagnetic influence of power lines; all without an appreciable reduction in the detector’s sensitivity. The Gizmo detects metal objects only. Each Detection Alarm could indicate a mine with metal content or an UXO (Unexploded Ordnance). Mines containing only small metal parts or very special metallic alloys might not be detected. Mines without any metal parts will not be detected. Do not use the Gizmo for locating magnetically influenced munitions. The known magnetically influenced mines of NATO- countries will not be activated, provided that the detector is equipped with non-magnetic batteries, and a minimum distance of 20 cm is maintained between the Search Head and the target. For the detection of mines from other manufacturers and non-NATO countries, it is recommended to test in advance if the Gizmo can detect each—and if so, at what depth—before beginning search operations. 2. 2.1 GIZMO METAL DETECTION SYSTEM Parts and Accessories The Gizmo Metal Detector System is a special configuration of the Vallon VMCI System and accessories. Mode Selector Switch and Data and Headset Port. Normal Soil Mode is recommended as the normal operation mode since it provides the most effective detection capabilities and the highest sensitivity. Mineral Soil Mode is used when operation in Normal Soil Mode is not reliable due to interference from minerals in the soil. Volume Control Mode is used to adjust the volume of the Internal Speaker or the Headset. The Data and Headset Port (figure 2-3) is used as a serial port interface for upgrading the firmware or to connect the Gizmo Headset. The Control and fel Panel is comprised of three buttons ‘ (2) and and a numbered LED Display (figure 2- 4). The 14 LEDs serve as a horizontal bar graph depicting signal SEE TT dalahalale strength when a target is detected, as well as displaying volume and sensitivity levels, channel number, battery status, and trouble shooting messages. Gizmo Metal Detector VMCI — Operation Manual to a 13 2.3 Headset The Gizmo system comes complete with a Headset that should only be used with the Gizmo system or other Vallon metal detectors. The Headset contains a non-magnetic piezo-speaker, necessary for use near all metal detector systems including the Gizmo. Use the Headset when it is difficult to hear the Detector Unit’s Internal Speaker or for silent operations when using the Audio Alert. Figure 2-5. Headset worn like a headphone. To install the Headset, connect the Headset Cable Connector (figure 2-5) to the Data & Headset Port (figure 2-3). Place the Headset speaker next to your ear, wrap the straps around your head, and fasten the straps (figure 2-5). NOTE: The Detector Unit’s Internal Speaker is automatically deactivated when the Headset is connected to the Detector Unit, Gizmo Metal Detector VMCI — Operation Manual 14 3.
