SYNOPSIS:
On the site of an abandoned church, an artists visionary and surreal dream manifests itself in paintings that extend along the walls, seemingly growing both naturally and spontaneously out of the Earths entrails. For seven long years, a young artist named Jess Mateo took on a titanic taskbreathing life back into the walls of an ancient deconsecrated church. Backed by UNESCO and recognized by intellectuals for his project, which is an example of that which should be considered culture; free of speculation, far from the art market and with a decidedly participatory social support network. Art sets us apart and brings us together. The very survival and justification of humanity requires its existence. What is life? What is our purpose here? Why must everything come to an end? Inscrutable questions that continue to present themselves to all those who stand wide-eyed before the Painted Murals of Alarcn.
The day we first saw the work of Jess Mateo, we were struck by the quality of his paintings, by the scale of his work, by the time it had required and by the social support that drove him to see the project through. We decided to tell his story, a story of overcoming obstacles, of struggle, of will power and work, of solidarity amongst men The documentary is made up of the various viewpoints held by writers, poets, philosophers, photographers and musicians who have considered the piece. Jess Mateos work is the indisputable protagonist. Through the careful HD filming of the paintings, spectacular camera movements, the landscape and architecture of La Mancha, graphic animation, and microscopic and archived images, the creative process of the piece is gradually revealed. Music accompanies us throughout the film. Different composers have been inspired by the murals to compose their works. All of these pieces have now been brought together to form the documentarys eclectic soundtrack. A visual exercise that takes the murals as reference, created through the superimposing of lines, colors and figures. The sum of all of these elements forms the mural; the sum of the interviews, photographs, music and writings shapes this documentary.
