Fundamental Concepts
Matter main characteristics : occupies and has mass Mass
mass of the body is the quantity of matter it contains.

System of Units
Universally accepted standard units which all similar quantities must be referred for their validity

Force is that which can change the state of rest. F = ma Motion change in position of a body with respect to another body in time

2 systems : C.G.S (Centimeter-gram-second) English System

C.G.S System
Centimeter-Gram-Second Length: Fundamental unit is meter ;also called the metric system 1 meter = 3.28 ft Mass: Fundamental unit is gram 1 kg = 1000g Time : Fundamental unit is second 60 sec = 1 min.

English System
Length: fundamental unit is foot. 1 foot = 1/3 of a yard 1 foot = 12 inches = 0.3048 meter 1 meter = 3.28 feet = 39.37 inches
Mass: Fundamental unit is pound 1 kg = 2.2 pounds 1 pound = .454 kilogram

Time: Fundamental unit is second

1. Place A is 1440 km by road to place B. How far is this in miles? (1 km = 0.621 mi.) 2. A man is 6 ft 2 in tall. How many centimeters is this? (1 ft = 12 in ; 1 in = 2.54 cm) 3. How many square feet are there in 1m2? (1m = 3.28 ft) 4. Express the velocity of 60 mi/hr in ft per second (1mile = 5280ft ; 1hr =3600 s) 5. A girl weighs 470 lbs. Convert to kilograms.

Lesson 1.2: Speed Velocity Acceleration Displacement vs. Distance Acceleration due to gravity
Prepared by: Ms. Anna Katrina Aspuria

A. Scalars and Vectors

Scalars are quantities that are fully described by a magnitude (or numerical value) alone.

B. Speed and Velocity

Speed is a scalar quantity
"how fast an object is moving. the rate at which an object covers distance. (S = d/t)

Vectors are quantities that are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction.

Velocity is a vector quantity

"the rate at which an object changes its position. (V = d/t, direction)

C. Distance and Displacement

Distance is a scalar quantity that refers to "how much ground an object has covered" during its motion. Displacement is a vector quantity that refers to "how far out of place an object is"; it is the object's overall change in position.

D. Acceleration
Acceleration is a vector quantity
rate at which an object changes its velocity. An object is accelerating if it is changing its velocity. A = velocity change/time = (Vfinal Vinitial)/time Acceleration due to gravity = -9.8 m/s2
