Canada mourns the death of Jack Layton

C
anadian opposition leader Jack Layton has died after a second bout of cancer, aged 61. Layton passed away at his home in Toronto at 4:45 a.m. Monday, from an as-yet unspecified cancer surrounded by his wife and children. His left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP) surged to become the official opposition for the first time in Mays federal elections. He stepped down only last month as party leader to fight his illness. In a letter released by the NDP after his death was announced, Mr Layton said he remained optimistic about Canadas future and its political system. Cherish every moment Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped, he said. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia

country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. Layton called on members of his party to remain committed to their proud history of social justice, universal healthcare and public pensions. To young Canadians, he spoke of his belief in your power to change this country and this world. Prime Minister Stephen Harper saluted his late adversarys contribution to public life, a contribution that will be sorely missed. At Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the flag was lowered to half-mast on Monday. Layton announced he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in February 2010. He campaigned in spring this year, leaning on a cane after surgery for a broken hip, leading his party to a second-place finish in Mays federal elections. On July 25th, the former Toronto city councilor said he was quitting temporarily as NDP leader to fight a newly diagnosed non-prostate cancer.

left-leaning New Democrats, long the third-place federal party in the Canadian parliament. Before that, the Quebec native was an activist and community organizer in Toronto, campaigning on issues such as Aids, poverty, violence against women and homelessness. He was elected MP in 2004 from a constituency in Toronto. His popularity helped the NDP to overtake the Liberals in Mays elections and become the countrys official In announcing the state funeral for Layton, the Office of the Prime Minister said, Canadians will have an opportunity to salute Jack Laytons contribution to public life. Prime Minister Stephen Harper had offered the official service to Laytons wife, MP Olivia Chow, and she accepted.

By tradition, state funerals are reserved for current and former governor generals, current and former prime ministers, and current members of cabinet. State funerals in Canada are planned by the Department of Canadian Heritage working with the family. People are invited according to a Heritage Department Table of Precedence that includes foreign and Canadian dignitaries, also in consultation with the family. The first state funeral in Canada was held for the Honourable Thomas DArcy McGee, a sitting MP and former cabinet minister, who was assassinated in April The state funerals of former governor general Ray Hnatyshyn in 2002 and former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau in

2000 in each lasted six days. The last state funeral in Canada was in 2009 for former Governor General Romeo LeBlanc. Flags in Ottawa, at City Hall in Toronto, at federal buildings in Toronto and other spots around the country have been lowered to half-staff and would remain there until after the funeral, officials said. The family has asked that people wishing to contribute send donations to the Broadbent Institute think-tank instead of sending flowers. Former NDP leader Ed Broadbent expects to have the institute up and running by September. Meanwhile, donations are being accepted through the NDP website. He is survived by his Hong Kong-born wife Olivia Chow, also an NDP MP, and his two children from a previous marriage, Michael and Sarah. Layton State Funeral Canadians are invited to pay their respects to the Honourable Jack Layton, Leader of Her Majestys Loyal Opposition and Member of the Queens Privy Council for Canada. The Lying-in-State for Mr. Layton took place in the foyer of the House of Commons in Ottawa on Wednesday, August 24 and Thursday, August 25. It p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to Canadians can also pay tribute to Mr. Layton as he lies in repose at Toronto City Hall on Friday, August 26 from 9 beginning at 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thompson Hall in Toronto.

Jack Laytons Last Letter to Canadians

Dear Friends, Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination. Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue. I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected. I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election. A few additional thoughts: To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please dont be discouraged that my own journey hasnt gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer. To the members of my party: weve done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Lets continue to move forward. Lets demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government. To the members of our parliamentary caucus: I have been privileged to work with each and every one of you. Our caucus meetings were always the highlight of my week. It has been my role to ask a great deal from you. And now I am going to do so again. Canadians will be closely watching you in the months to come. Colleagues, I know you will make the tens of thousands of members of our party proud of you by demonstrating the same seamless teamwork and solidarity that has earned us To my fellow Quebecers: On May 2nd, you made an historic decision. You decided that the way to replace Canadas Conservative federal government with something better was by working together in partnership with progressive-minded Canadians across the country. You made the right decision then; it is still the right decision today; and it will be the right decision right through to the next election, when we will succeed, together. You have elected a superb team of New Democrats to Parliament. They are going to be doing remarkable things in the years to come to make this country better for us all. my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada. Young people have been a great source of inspiration for me. I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party. As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future. better one a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy futures for our children. We can do our part to save the worlds environment. We can restore our good level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Dont let them tell you it cant be done. My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And well change the world. All my very best,

Mr Damodar said he was glad that Fiji was included in this 4D experience which was a new concept globally however regrettably Fiji will not be able to provide the full 4D experience. 4D actually includes the whole motion whereby the chair or seat actually moves. Or if there is a scene of rat around, you will hit the cable under you chair and you will feel there is a rat underneath, he said. However, Mr Damodar said that while the entire 4D experience is quite convincing having witnessed people jumping in their seats, it is quite expensive to purchase the equipment to provide the experience. Rugby fans in the Fijian military are expected to apply for exemptions to the travel ban ahead of the Rugby World Cup, Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says. The New Zealand Government recently exempted Leone Nakarawa after he resigned from the Fijian military. New Zealand has imposed sanctions on Fiji since the coup in 2006, preventing members of the self-appointed government, their families, and military members from travelling here. McCully said Nakarawas exemption was fast-tracked because of the Rugby World Cup. His is the only exemption to be granted so far. But McCully was expecting more applications by Fijians keen to travel to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup. There are a number of rugby followers in the regime and in the rugby union itself who might wish to come and the rules will apply to them if they are part of the regime or part of the military then the sanctions will apply. Anyone else who wanted to leave the regime and put in an application to travel to New Zealand would be treated on their merit, he said. rugby internationally. I wouldnt have been doing my job if I didnt ask the obvious question... can we slip back into the military afterwards? I made some inquiries about circumstances

The Government wanted to send a clear message that if people chose to leave the military they would be rewarded with being exempt from the travel bans. In some cases well leave them (the sanctions) for a cooling off period where there are other factors that suggest theres resignation from the military was genuine, advantage in treating it more quickly were partly because he had had offers to play prepared to do so.

A resort has engaged the services of two international renowned artists to help locals develop their interest and skills in painting. Australian artists Kerrie Lester and Leonie Norton, known for her botanical paintings, will be at Daku Resort in Savusavu on paintings. Resort manager Delia Rothnie-Jones said Ms Lester's painting program would start next month with Ms Norton's painting classes scheduled for next week. "Her course is her second one in Fiji, and it offers a chance to work with one of Australia's best known contemporary artists and enjoy her enthusiastic embrace of the joy of painting." 'There's no such thing as a mistake, doll just paint it in!' was an inspiration to her previous students in Fiji," said Ms RothnieJones. "They loved the challenge of painting straight onto the canvas, which was not something they were all used to doing and it helped them understand the joy of painting Ms Rothnie-Jones said the painting classes would involve usage of local material and natural resources. Response to Leonie Norton's classes, a botanical artist and one of Australia's most educators, has been overwhelming. Ms Norton also conducts classes in New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom and Western Australia.

FIJICARE Insurance Limited (FIL) is poised to break even by the end of the year Chairman Ross Porter, while speaking at the companys annual general meeting last week said the loss was disappointing and trading was difficult. This loss is attributable to one large life claim and some medical evacuation claims spikes, Mr Porter said. However, he added that efforts were being made to reduce the loss but he predicted that a good result a break even was possible by the end of December. But there is some good news, our June and July claims were down, much lower than the average so we can see some light at the end of the tunnel, Mr Porter said. Our motor portfolio is showing an underwriting profit and we have already met our minimum and deposit reinsurance premiums for the year, something we missed hitting last year. Mr Porter also took time to reflect on the last 40 years where he had experienced good, bad and indifferent economic times and trading results. In terms of FijiCare, I believe we have seen the worst of it and failing any unusual claims spikes in the last five months, we hope for a stabilization of reported claims. We still need to fix some internal issues. Life and medical underwriting is the area were working on and to this end, we are concentrating on staff training, underwriting rules and standards. We will see the benefits of this later this year and next year. Mr Porter said he strongly disagreed that the economy was struggling basing his opinion on the inability to secure rooms in the western hotels which had been recording full occupancy. The planes are full, the hotels are full and tourism looks particularly healthy, he said. The strong Australian dollar augurs well for Fiji making it once again the first choice holiday destination. Our goal at FijiCare is to ensure we get on board the train to recovery. We are constantly looking at ways to improve our processes, to streamline our product delivery and our claims service.

After my accident I had constant neck and back pains. I felt sad most of the time and became very anxious about the future. ICBC said I was overreacting and offered $17,000. My case settled for $400,000 at mediation. MR. S. The damage to my car was only $700. ICBC said I could not have been injured; but I was. My lawyer finalized my claim for $28,000 plus expenses. MISS M. ICBC offered me $32,000 to finish my case. I was off work for 6 months and saw a specialist because of my jaw injury. I couldnt mop the floor or clean our bathroom without help from my children. I received $200,000 through my lawyers efforts. MRS. S. The damage to my vehicle was about $1,700. ICBC said this was a Low Velocity Impact (LVI) and refused to pay me for my injuries and physio costs. My lawyer obtained more than $45,000 for me. MRS. B. A car hit me as I walked across the street. ICBC blamed me because of the colour of my clothing. My lawyer worked hard and obtained necessary evidence. My case settled for over $300,000. MRS.
