21st Sunday in Ordinry Time August 21, 2011 Domingo 21ro del Tiempo Ordinario

From The Pastors Desk

Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! A primary axiom of real estate even in these difficult timesis that an essential element in determining a propertys value is location, location, location. That certainly applies to some extent to our Gospel reading from Matthew (16:13-19) this weekend. We find ourselves almost in the exact physical center of the Gospel. It represents for us, a crucial momenta tipping point-- in the life and ministry of Jesus. Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declares the true identity and mission of the Lord as the Christ, the Son of the living God. From that moment on, everything clicks and the narrative leads us to and through the Cross to the Resurrection. Who do you say that I am? Jesus asks his disciples. Theyve known him, lived with him, traveled with him, listened to him, and observed his preaching, teaching and miracles for nearly three full years. Yet, it is only Peter who dares to speak the truthbut it is not yet his truth. The words he blurts out are given to him Peter will not become truly conscious of their significance until much later when he encounters the Risen Lord. Who do you say that I am? Jesus asks us as his disciples. No doubt, we may be tempted, like Peter, to blurt out a quick response. Only our answer would most likely take the form of a knee-jerk reactiona rote rejoinder learned in catechism. But Jesus will not let us off the hook; he really wants to know our personal response to Hima response that can only come from our lived experience and direct encounter with the Lord. So, who is Jesus for you (and for me?) Is He a friend? A companion? A brother? The lover of our soul? Our defender? Our judge? Or is he primarily the go to guy who, for us, is to fulfill our wants, needs, and dreams? Our faith impels us to turn the question around so we can find a better, more honest reply. Who are you, who am I to Jesus? Are you His friend? Prove it! Are you his brother or sister? Are you one who serves Him faithfully? How? Like Peter, we may find ourselves coming up short as we honestly examine our real motives, intentions, and shortcomings. And like Peter, we depend ultimately and most completely on the Spirit of God to help us to get past our own weaknesses in order to truly know the Lord. Every good thing we have and enjoy in our lives is a gift from Godand that includes one of the most precious gifts of allthe gift of faith in Jesus, the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Elsewhere in the Parish As summer starts to wind down, we here at the parish are beginning to spruce things up. Our dedicated parish staff (Shirley Gonzalez, Christie Herrera, Maricela Rivadeneyra) are busy preparing for the start of this falls course offerings, calendaring, and group meetings. Members of our faith formation team especially Bill Bischoff (Director of Catechetical Ministry) as well as Elena Zavala and Larry LaGrasta (directors of the Spanish and English language childrens religious ed and sacramental preparation programs respectively) are working hard to prepare registration, classrooms and syllabuses. We will be welcoming as well some 80 volunteer catechists to staff the religious education program for the coming year, with enrollment expected to reach a peak of 800 students. Things are looking brighter at our parish school, Old Mission Montessori, too, as plans are underwear for painting and window cleaning efforts, as well as the laying of much-needed new carpeting and lighting. Many thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who showed up last Saturday for our painting party. Thanks, also, to Frank Kebelman and others from our soon to be Boy Scout troop, who were so helpful w/the painting at OMMS. Speaking of volunteers, many thanks to members of MOP (Maintain Our Parish), the Samoan community, our Knights of Columbus Council 3162 and others who turned out last weekend to remove the fencing and clean up debris behind the Serra Center in anticipation of the construction of the OLG Sports Court/Parking Lot. Were on our way! Right now, were waiting for final approvals from the City of Oceanside. Last, but not least, dont miss two upcoming events to celebrate the founding of Mission San Luis Rey: August 26, (7:30pm): The Procession of the Sainta multicultural celebration at the Old Mission Church, including the carrying of a 250-year-old statue of our patron St. King Louis IX of France, Aztec dancers, a Mexican banda, fireworks, and refreshments. All free of charge! August 27 is the 28th Annual Heritage Ball to be held in the Mission gardens. Tickets for this formal gala dinner/dance can be purchased at the Mission, or by calling Maureen Sullivan at 760/757-3651 x146. Proceeds will benefit the seismic retrofitting of the Old Mission Church. Welcome!

Catechists /Teachers needed

Young people today are looking for individuals who are authentic and confident Catholics, as models of the faith. It is not how much you know about the faith but how you live it. With this in mind please consider the following. We are in need of catechists/teachers for our high school youth faith formation program. We are looking for men & women who would be willing to share and teach the faith, engage in discussion and faith experiences with our young people. Classes are on Tuesday evenings with some Saturday mornings. Training, resources, etc., are provided. Last year our Confirmation Program and other high school classes had over 150 students. Many of last years teachers have moved or are unable to commit for this year. At present we need eight teachers and also classroom aides. Please consider investing sometime with the younger church they are the future of our faith. For more information please call Bill Bischoff at 760-5470702.

PARISH BIBLE STUDYINTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE

Introduction to the Bible is a seven week presentation focused on making the Bible more attractive to Catholics who may find the idea of reading the Bible daunting. There will be practical explanations that will make the Bible less foreign and more familiar. The hope is that those attending will discover how the Bible came about, how to choose a Bible translation and how to interpret the Bible within Catholic tradition and benefit from Bible Studies. We are using the book Introduction to the Bible by Stephen J. Binz. There is no cost for the course however there is a suggested donation of $10 which pays for the book and handouts. The Parish Bible Study has three sessions a week. Each session covers the same material so if you miss one you can attend one of the other sessions. There is a Wednesday evening session that meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Old Mission (next door) in the Zalvadea Room. There are two sessions on Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., both in room #1 in the Parish Center. Classes begin Wednesday September 7th and Thursday September 8th. For more info., please call Bill at 760-547-0702.

The Catechetical Minute The New Missal

What is the language like in the New Translation of the Roman Missal? Part 1.
A frequent comment that is heard in relation to the new translation is that the language is of a more formal style than the current translation. This was a deliberate intention in the work of the translation and is clearly identifiable as one of its characteristics. The purpose of this is to reflect the language of the original Latin texts, providing a translation which is clearly sacred in character yet not antiquated in style. To understand and truly appreciate this effort we need to rid ourselves of the idea so prevalent in todays tech age that the sole purpose of language is communication of information. This idea has the tendency to incorporate a minimal approach and usage in how we use our language. It would argue that clarity of communication is best achieved by using the fewest words possible. This tendency alive and well in our time has led to an impoverishment of the language , as the form of everyday conversation becomes the norm guiding not only the spoken but also written forms of the language. The form of language used by the generation of teens raised almost solely in the media communication & socialization avenues of our society reflect the worst of this minimalistic impact on our language. These insights of use and vocabulary are particularly important in relation to our liturgical texts as we use vernacular translations of text originally in Latin or Greek languages removed from everyday English. The words of the original Latin prayers are very rich and used to reflect the various mysteries of salvation, conveying concepts which do not occur in everyday conversation. To simplify the language is often to water down the concept, often omitting a distinct feature of the original. For example: Current Roman Missal (1973) New Translation (2011) Lord God, O God, who wonderfully we praise you for, created the dignity of creating man, human nature and still more for and still more wonderfully restoring him in Christ. restored it Our liturgical language not only has the purpose of communicating the content of our belief, but also needs to express that belief by giving voice to the mind of the Church in celebrating a particular belief. LESSONS OF FAITH - THE HISTORY OF THE MASS

THE HISTORY OF THE MASS is an eight week presentation of how the Mass evolved and how it was shaped and reshaped by times and many cultures, as well as developments in theology and the sacred arts. In this series there will be the catechesis of the Mass and how the New Translation of the Roman Missal will shape the celebration of the Mass in our time. The text for this session will be We Worship, by Fr. Oscar Lukefahr, CM. The suggested donation for the book and handouts is $13.00. Lessons of Faith meets on Tues. from 11:00 a.m.-12:15:00 p.m. in Rm. #1 in the Parish Center. Sessions begin on Tues., Sept. 6th. For more info., please call Bill at 760-547-0702.

ASSIST WITH A BIBLE

At the Easter Vigil our parish community witnessed over sixty five people receiving the sacraments necessary to complete their full entrance into the Church. One of the key elements of their catechesis is the coming to know the Scriptures, the Word of God, on a weekly basis. During weekly class and again when they gather on Sunday they come to build a relationship with Jesus Christ that they will carry with them for all their lives. For this to take place the RCIA catechumens & candidates are given a Bible at the ceremony marking the beginning of their journey of faith. Our parish faith formation budget is stretched this year trying to cover many, many, needs. Your help will be greatly appreciated if you could help us with providing Bibles to our RICA groups (both English & Spanish). A donation of $20.00, or any amount, would help us in purchasing a Bible for each RCIA catechumen or candidate entering the Church next Easter. If you wish to give, you may make a donation at the Parish Office or Bill Bischoffs office, or drop it into the collection in an envelope marked BIBLES. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, call Bill Bischoff at 760547-0702.

Querida Familia Parroquial,
