SPIRITUALITY 1. Cite 5 Salient points in the article that relate to spiritual care nursing or in nursing spirituality. A. Spiritual care is important and should be integrated with the art or practice of nursing. Nurses are in the best position to deliver the aspect of spirituality in nursing care, particularly when caring for the patient with mental, medical and terminal illness. In every nursing action, it encompasses morality, judgment and values which are all aspects of spirituality. Hence, spirituality is the very core of caring. B. Spiritual needs are just important as physical and psychological needs. Human being lives in three dimensions, the body, the mind and the soul. As nurses, we care holistically for patients. We can cure physical illnesses and control mental illnesses but the disease and uncertainties of the soul are much as well our responsibility to deal with.

C. Spiritual beliefs should be valued and respected regardless of religion. Spiritual issues are raised in disbelief and anger, the nurse helps the patient with their spiritual journey, searching for meaning and developing a deeper meaning in faith, hope and love. The nurse assists the patient as a whole being, using holistic nursing. It should always be respectful and non-biased. It is about listening, identity, being respected and valued. Men are created equally in the eyes of God. Regardless of religion, people have the same needs. Providing spiritual care doesnt need to be biased and concentrated to the religion of the nurse and the patient. The nurse should make a connection with the clients mind while removing biases. Spirituality does not require any religious beliefs, but there exists an affiliation with God or whatever God is perceived to be by that person. D. Spiritual support and physical presence is a duty of the nurse to a patient.

Being present at a religious ritual such as anointing of the sick can be important to the dying patient. Other ways of introducing spirituality and health can be undertaken through encouragement of journaling, meditation, scripture reading, prayer, music, art therapy, guided imagery and aromatherapy. Seemingly obvious, nurses are the ones delivering all sorts of care for the patients. Therefore, the client is dependent onto the nurse. It is best that the nurse provide spiritual care for the client for the nurse has the ability to touch other peoples lives. Spiritual care is seen in every nursing action. A simple act of kindness and concern makes a persons soul lighter. E. Nurses are a source of spiritual hope for all patients. Working as a hospice nurse has its great reward which is providing comfort and hope to patients who are dying. Being able to sit with the patient, holding their hands, saying a prayer or rosary is an important aspect of spiritual care. Being a source of strength and hope for the patient and family is rewarding. Spiritual support provides meaning of hope, love and satisfaction in their final days. Reconciliation is also part of spiritual care. Being able to help with these unfulfilled expectations or omissions can be fulfilling. Assuring the patient that they will not die alone and guiding them to the light. Nurses are icons of undying love and care for the sick. Patients view us as assistants of Gods in healing them, if unfortunately, the patients are about to reach their end, still we are with them. We are with them in every step they take whether to wellness or death. Nurses care for the well and the sick. We care for the dying. We care even for the dead.

2. How would you describe the nature of spirituality in the context of nursing? Caring for the spiritual needs of patients is a neglected and misunderstood aspect of nursing care. This is due to the lack of instruction nurses receive in the spiritual dimension of nursing. We can personally attest to this because in our experience as nursing students, spirituality was identified as part of the holistic approach to providing patient care, but the subject was never explored. Until this aspect of nursing care is addressed, patients will receive care that is fragmented and not holistic. Nurses spend more time with patients than does any other health care provider. Since the nurses own personal spirituality will permeate individual nursing practice, it will make each nurse to critically evaluate his/her own spirituality. Becoming aware of ones spiritual perspectives will enhance personal awareness and, thereby, contribute to the provision of spiritual care to patients.

3. How does the article affect your set of values and philosophy about nursing spirituality? The article basically strengthens our respect towards the religion of each person, the integrity of spirituality. Weve learned that respect for individuality is the uttermost principle in dealing with patients having spiritual problems. Spiritual nursing doesnt apply only to the dying but to all stages of life.

What is the essential question(s) that you want to answer later through your nursing practice? y y How can a religiously conscious nurse remove all biases when dealing with clients opposing his/her beliefs? Where will a nurse put his/her self when there is a conflict between the teachings of spirituality and legalities?
