At least 3 million Americans suffer from Celiac Disease (1 in 133 people), an allergy to wheat gluten. This allergy creates difficulties for those who must avoid any food or product that contains wheat or gluten, a thickening agent in many foodsincluding those that contain no wheat at all. Some people are highly allergic and can have significant health problems from even a small amount; others may experience only mild symptoms or none at all. A growing number of people, especially children, are being diagnosed with this intestinal condition. As Catholics, the bread that is consecrated to be the Body of Christ poses a particular health issue for people with Celiac disease. Some choose not to receive the Consecrated Host and only drink from the Cup; others may not be able to receive even from the Cup if any gluten has transferred to it by someone who has received from the Cup previously. People who are highly allergic have to be concerned about cross-contamination. The Catholic Church has granted the use of a lowgluten host for those who cannot tolerate wheat gluten. The host has to have a minimal amount of gluten in order to be bread, which is required for consecration (we cannot use rice, for example). There are several people in our parish who are currently using this alternate host. Perhaps there are others among us who suffer from this condition? If so, we have been developing a set of procedures for the distribution of Holy Communion using the lowgluten hosts, and to receive from the Cup without concern for cross-contamination. If you have Celiac Disease or any allergy to wheat gluten, please contact Fr. Chris so he can inform you of how we can help keep you close to Christ in the Eucharist while responding to your health needs. We plan to begin our new procedures the first weekend of September (9/3-4). Fr. Chris Heath: cheath@stedward.com, or 949-542-4312

Ministry News
NEW MINISTRY FOR MEN AT ST. EDWARD MALE SPIRITUTALITYMENS RITES OF PASSAGE RETREAT MINISTRY This ministry centers around a retreat for men who are on a spiritual journey seeking answers to real life questions such as: 1. Who Am I? 2. Why Am I here? 3. What is the meaning of my life? 4. How can I know and experience my inherent dignity, my true worth and value without feeling that I have to earn it? 5. How do I face my father wounds (resulting from absentee fathers- due to many different circumstances-that so many men have experienced)? 6. How do I address such issues as my pain, losses, failures, or grief? 7. How can I love myself more deeply? 8. How can I more profoundly love others?
The Mens Rites of Passage is not a typical lecture-based retreat nor is it about secular therapy. It is a deeply prayerful and soulful experience that builds on the classic patterns of male initiation through simple and moving rituals and teaching (founded by Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM/www.malespirituality.org or www.radicalgrace.org). This mens ministry will meet twice per year at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in a location to be announced in our church bulletin and on our website, stedward.com and our parish blog. Want to learn more now about male spirituality and/or wish to go on this retreat? You can call or e-mail Larry Parker, parishioner, at lardgwo@cox.net or 800-799-1119.
BEREAVEMENT POT-LUCK AND SOCIAL All members of the Bereavement Ministry are invited to the annual Pot Luck Supper and Social on Friday August 19th at 6:30 p.m. in Knight Hall. Please RSVP Gerry Holbert, 492-5754. LADIES ROUND ROBIN BRIDGE Now is the time to sign up for the Ladies Bridge Group! We welcome all ladies of the parish to join us for monthly bridge. If you are not on our present roster and would like to join please call Lorraine @ 2480640, email, lorrainearonson@cox.net or Doris @ 240 -0138, email, dorisdeal@msn.com Our cutoff date is August 23, 2011. CHRISTIAN SERVICE NEEDS YOUR HELP The Christian Service office purchases some of our food items from Second Harvest Food Bank to serve the needy in our community, however, they are not carrying nutritious items. We are asking for donations to provide these food items, like canned meat and fish, unsweetened cereals, vegetables and canned fruits, to our clients. Once again we thank you for your help and generosity and May God Bless You! IMPORTANT PLEASE READ FOR YOUR INFORMATION Periodically, and more so of late, we have had gypsies, usually a mother with a small child, seeking money from our parishioners after the weekend Masses. While we have given them food from our Christian Service Outreach (to which they are indifferent), what they want are monetary donations. It is a racket and they prey on parishioners good will. They have been circulating among parishes and other establishments seeking money. We ask that you do not respond to their solicitation for money so as not to encourage their return. It is important to say that we are not turning our backs to the poor; rather we do not wish to condone or encourage their manipulative and sometimes aggressive behavior which is a racket for collecting money. OUR LADY OF FATIMA TRAVELING STATUE The beautiful traveling statue of Our Lady of Fatima is available to St. Edward parishioners. Contact Carol Harris at 493-0794.

EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH After over 30 years of embryonic stem cell research, first with mouse and then with human embryonic stem cells, not a single patient has been helped. And while over the past years three experimental trials have been approved in the U.
