hile doing site-prep work in oil fields, no contractor wants to be that guy the one whos holding up a bunch of other contractors from completing their respective tasks. Thats why Zimny Oilfield Services LLC invested in a 2005 Vermeer RT650, made by Vermeer Manufacturing Co., to quickly and efficiently dig trenches used to convey frac water or other materials around drill pads in North Dakota. The Vermeer trencher lets us dig trenches about 10 times faster than the skid-steer we used to use, says Jason Ronsberg, manager of the company, based in Lansford, N.D. With a skid-steer, it sometimes takes four or five passes, depending on how hard the ground is. With the Vermeer RT650 trencher, Zimny Oileld But the trencher Services can dig oileld trenches 10 times faster does the job in just one than with its skid-steer. (Photo courtesy of pass, he continues. That Zimny Oileld Services) allows us to get in and get out quickly, which means people arent waiting for us to move all the other equipment onto the site. Time is money, so thats pretty important. Established in 2008, Zimny supports oil field operators in a variety of ways, including installing pit liners, hauling water and providing septic and portable restroom services. But the company started out with and built a reputation on its trenching services, which served as an entry to other customer offerings, Ronsberg says. We generally charge a little more than most companies, but we get the work because of how much quicker we are, he says. We built this company based on our trenching

service, so our business comes directly from the trencher. We get hired because we own that piece of equipment. Its been one of the pieces of equipment that keeps us as busy as we are, he adds. It gets our foot in the door, and then when the guys that hire us see how good a job we do with that trencher, it provides opportunities to provide them with our other services. The rubber-tire RT650 features a DEUTZ 76-hp, four-cylinder diesel engine; hydrostatic ground drive; a 60-inch maximum digging depth; a diggingwidth range of 6 to 16 inches; a 72-inch-wide, 14-inchhigh backfill blade; and a backhoe with a 180-degree swing arc, a 159-inch reach and a maximum digging depth of nearly 90 inches. A steerable rear planetary axle provides a tight turning radius for better maneuverability in tight quarters, and the operators station rotates 90 degrees for added comfort.
do is replace teeth every two months or so. Where would Zimny be without the Vermeer trencher? Thats not something Id like to think about, Ronsberg says. Wed be way behind, thats for sure. As well as be that guy that no one wants to be at a busy drill pad. GOMC
The trencher does the job in just one pass. That allows us to get in and get out quickly, which means people arent waiting for us to move all the other equipment onto the site. Time is money, so thats pretty important.
Jason Ronsberg
Ronsberg says Zimny crews dig trenches deeper than other contractors 3 feet compared to 1 to 1 1/2 feet which they can do easily with the powerful trencher. In addition, the trencher frees up a crew member because its backfill blade efficiently cleans up excess excavated dirt along the trenches. With a skid-steer, an extra worker with a shovel would normally do that work, Ronsberg says. The blade takes care of flattening out all that excess dirt much faster than someone shoveling it away by hand, he notes. Oil field drilling is a year-round job, and the trencher really earns its keep in winter because its not deterred by frozen ground. In winters around here, the ground is really, really hard, so you need that kind of strength and power to dig here, Ronsberg says. Plus, at a lot of these sites, they have to put down rock, gravel or scoria, which gets really solid and hard. When it gets to that point and the ground is frozen, a skid-steer just doesnt cut it. Ronsberg also praises the Vermeers durability, pointing out the machine is working in the field three to four days a week. The company trenches about 10 to 15 drill pads a month, he says. We havent had any issues with it, he says. The only thing weve had to

Cover Story
Texas-based pipeline-maintenance specialist Sprint Pipeline takes prides in getting jobs done on time and with an unmatched safety record
building moment that one high-profile project that expands their expertise, boosts their reputation in an industry and opens doors to more business. For suburban Houston-based Sprint Pipeline Services LP , that time to shine occurred in the fall of 2007, when construction of an underground gas-storage facility in Bay City, Texas, fell behind schedule.

Sprint employee Steven Duggan uses a sandblaster and appropriate safety gear to clean a pipe weld on a pipeline lateral project.
When a project like that gets to a certain point, the company building the facility establishes dates with customers for when it will start storing gas, and penalties are assessed if they dont meet those deadlines, says Kyle Lenamond, company president. In this situation, some of those contracts were coming due, and the company was way behind in a real bind. Nothing could happen until the interconnects were in place. We came in with 75 to 100 people and worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to get the interconnects on line and start pushing gas. It pushed us pretty good. The project posed several challenges, Lenamond points out. For starters, imagine you have to go to work immediately to 24/7 shifts in whats basically a cow pasture, with no infrastructure at all, he says. Some crews had to quickly adapt to working at night, which required light towers and additional safety personnel. Sprint also had to factor in lower productivity due to cold, fatigue and darker working conditions.
Our main focus is safety. We work very hard to keep our employees and the public safe while were working. Thats the number one way we dierentiate.
Kyle Lenamond
Even with lighting, on-site light is limited, Lenamond says. It takes a little more planning, too, because no stores are open at night. You need to plan for all contingencies because if you run out of something at 3 a.m., theres nowhere to turn. In the end, Sprint met its end-of-December deadline to finish the project and burnished its resume in the process. Theres a small niche group of people in the industry, so word travels fast, Lenamond says. After that project, we could walk in and say we know what its like to do six interconnects. And because of our performance there, we were able to sit down and negotiate our next project. Thats unusual for a $50 million project. Typically they bid it out.
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS While those kinds of projects add some sizzle to Sprints resume, the companys meat-and-potatoes business remains pipeline maintenance. Thats been the primary focus since its inception in 2004, when founders Jon Johnson and Robert Grimes saw an opportunity in the burgeoning natural-gas pipeline boom. Lenamond says those maintenance services include virtually anything that has to do with pipelines, from mowing right-of-ways to painting to installing up to several miles of mainline. About 80 percent of the companys business volume comes from natural-gas clients, with the balance stemming from the oil industry, and the majority of Sprints customers are in Texas. Initially, the company got on bid lists by relying on a strong network of contacts that Johnson and Grimes had developed during many years in the industry. Sprint also purchased a small maintenance company in the Houston area that provided a limited but instant business base. That company already had two or three contracts, which helped us get on more bid lists, Lenamond says. And as customers get more comfortable with you, they let you bid on bigger and bigger contracts. Sprint competes against two different markets, with about 10 to 15 competitors in each market. For maintenance contracts, most of the competitors are smaller, mom-and-mop operations. For small pipeline installations (two to four miles or less) and hydrotesting services, Sprint competes against medium-size companies, he says.

SAFETY MATTERS Given the nature of working with pipelines that carry explosive gas, one of Sprints core concerns is employee safety. Lenamond says one of the ways Sprint tries to differentiate itself from competitors is through a stellar safety record. Our main focus is safety, he says. We work very hard to keep our employees and the public safe while were working. Thats the number one way we differentiate. The companys Safe and Smart safety program includes daily meetings on job sites to talk about various issues that pop up and quarterly company-wide meetings to review the safety performance and address topical issues. To motivate employees, the company awards each employee a $100 cash bonus if the company meets its annual safety objectives. Each employee also can earn another $100 for every quarter they do not log a recordable personal or vehicular injury, for a potential total annual bonus of $500. Employees also must participate in the daily safety meetings to qualify. Employees also receive smaller rewards jackets, shirts and the like that promote the Safe and Smart program and remind them of the importance of workplace safety, Lenamond says. In addition, Sprint uses physical and written assessments to determine operators ability to perform nearly two-dozen critical, riskier tasks. Sprints Dallas Fontenot, general superintendent, The program is producing left, and Robert Hallen, project manager. solid results. The companys
18
Total Recordable Injury Rate (TRIR) for 2010 was .51, well below the industry average of 1.0. In addition, its Emergency Modification Rate (EMR) a statistic that helps the insurance industry determine workers compensation insurance premiums by comparing the value and number of a companys claims to other companies in the same industry over a three-year period is .49. Anything less than 1.0 is below the industry average. (continued)

CONTROLLED GROWTH One of Sprints chief challenges is maintaining a reasonable rate of growth especially in terms of its workforce and equipment purchases that allows the company to remain competitive and profitable. Historically, pipeline construction companies grow rapidly during profitable times and may purchase more equipment, hire more employees and build new facilities.
We create a family atmosphere its part of our culture. I emphasize treating people with respect and dignity. Our business is only as good as our people. If we dont treat them well, they wont take care of business and therefore wont take care of our clients.
Kyle Lenamond
Then when things get bad, they start cutting budgets to make payroll or minimum payments on equipment, Lenamond says of some competitors in the industry. Then the price undercutting begins. For example, say it costs $100 a foot to lay a pipeline and pay for people, equipment and make a profit, he continues. If Tell us your story ... someone comes in and says theyll do it for $70 just to Would you like to share your companys success story with readers of GOMC? ourselves lean. You make sure that when times are good youre profitable and let your reputation precede you. To control the cost of equipment purchases, Sprints strategy centers on buying equipment thats used regularly and renting more specialized machines, such as side booms, that would be used only for certain large projects. The company owns about $5 million worth of equipment, including a half-dozen Peterbilt haul trucks, nine Caterpillar 420 backhoes, five Caterpillar 330 trackhoes and a GapVax Inc. HV-56 industrial vacuum loading truck built on a 2007 Volvo chassis. On larger out-of-state projects, Sprint hires temporary workers who live near the project or local tradesmen who are willing to travel, such as welders and equipment operators. To attract and retain permanent employees, the company offers profit sharing and an annual, performance-based bonus program. We have a good reputation for looking after our employees, Lenamond says. We create a family atmosphere its part of our culture. I emphasize treating people with respect and dignity. Our business is only as good as our people. If we dont treat them well, they wont take care of business and therefore wont take care of our clients. BRANCHING OUT In terms of business diversification, Lenamond believes in focusing on core competencies pipeline maintenance, in Sprints case and branching out when it makes sense. For example, the company is expanding into hydrotesting, which involves testing the integrity of gas pipelines by filling them with water for a specific time period to determine their ability to maintain a specified pressure per square inch. Sprint does the testing either on its own for customers or by working as a subcontractor for other companies. But overall, Sprint which generated roughly $76 million in sales during 2010 plans to continue to emphasize maintenance work while supplementing its resume with special projects that fit its core capabilities. Lenamond says that strategy is critical to withstanding the boom-and-bust cycles in the oil and gas industries. Im very into our core business, he explains. When pipelines were booming, a lot of companies inverted their business and focused on pipelines and got more info away from maintenance. But we see it as Caterpillar, Inc. our bread and butter. Weve maintained 309/675-1000 those customer relationships. Its kind of www.cat.com like dancing with the one that brought GapVax, Inc. you. Maintenance got our foot in the door, 888/442-7829 so we stick with it. Theres always going to www.gapvax.com be a need for maintenance. GOMC

The rotary fan press from Prime Solution Inc. features continuous pressure differential technology to dewater sludges and slurries. Features include slow rotational speed (less than 1 rpm), enclosed, automated, low maintenance, portable, space-saving and expandable system. Conditioned sludge is fed into the enclosed, slow-moving dewatering channel between two parallel stainless steel wedge wire filter plates. The feed sludge is subject to a pressure drop where liquids pass through the filter openings and solids advance within the channel. Sludge continues to dewater as the feed pump supplies more sludge, slowly moving the solids through the channels toward the outlet of the press, forming a cake. Units can be expanded up to four channels with capacities of 260 gpm. Skid-mounted systems include central operator control panel, feed pump, chemical prep, inline mixing and the availability of plant-integrated controls. Increasingly sophisticated cold mix asphalt products are making inroads in harsh environments where hot mix fears to tread By Peter Kenter
from Chile and Colombia to Canadas north, and on traditional roads as far away as the united Kingdom. the freeze-thaw cycle is not asphalts worst enemy, says EZ street senior vice president lars seagren. Water is asphalts number one enemy. Whether in the form of rain, snow runoff, condensation or humidity, asphalt considers water an evil presence. florida has plenty of that, which is why seagren and his brother hired a team of chemists to develop an advanced polymer that would not only cause the asphalt mix to stick to asphalt and concrete, but to do so in the presence of water. a chemical reaction displaces any environmental moisture, allowing the product to adhere to the hot mix asphalt is the best asphalt product for patching or surfacing a road if surface below. Cold asphalt products, or hot mix alternatives as theyre commonly known, aim to fill that gap by providing materials that can be delivered and applied in a broad range of environments, using minimal equipment. originally developed for the florida department of transportation in 1995, miami-based EZ streets cold asphalt is being used on mine sites ranging

conditions. But in many parts of the world we cant always choose to pave a road or airstrip on a warm, clear day. if you use hot mix under adverse conditions, youll need to come back in days or months to replace it. EZ streets is one of a number of cold asphalt products available. the product sold is the polymer itself, which is shipped in drums or totes and mixed with local aggregate and asphalt cement, which comprises about 95 percent of the asphalt mix. the product has been shipped to remote locations by road, sea and air. Were something like Coca-Cola, shipping their syrup to bottling companies around the world, seagren explains. STORE UNTIL READY While traditional hot mix must be applied within hours of mixing, the cold mix product can be stored indefinitely until ready for use. additionally, hot mix must be applied in moderate temperatures, while EZ street has been applied at temperatures approaching 15 degrees f on the low end and up to 100 degrees on the high side. its also applied a little thinner than hot mixabout two inches thick before compacting.
roads surrounding the worlds largest underground copper mine, says seagren. We were slated to use it on parking lots, potholes and utility cuts but we were also invited to look inside the mine. to the EZ street reps surprise, the mine had an interior network of about 1,000 miles of underground roadway, of which about one quarter was paved with asphalt. Hot asphalt was traditionally used for paving, but it would last only between four and six months, says seagren. it was probably 35 or 40 degrees inside the mine and damp. You could touch the walls and roadway and feel the moisture.
TRIAL WITHOUT FIRE mine management agreed to a trial interior application using the cold asphalt product. the asphalt was mixed in santiago, about 100 miles away, shipped to the mine in trucks and stored on the mine site for several weeks before paving began. EZ street worked with the mine companys own paving contractor who drove a traditional paver inside the mine to compact the mix. if the road wed paved had lasted six months and a day it would have been a success, simply because we eliminated the need for a lot of the equipment that would have to be shipped in for hot mix If the road wed paved had lasted six months and a day it would have production, says seagren. But that trial strip has already held up for 10 years. been a success But that trial strip has already held up for 10 years. the product has more recently been used in aboveground Lars Seagren applications at other south american mine sites, including mining concessions in Colombia and Bolivia. these are very remote mine sites, and Colombia has experienced some of surfaces can be paved anywhere the polymer drums can be shipped and the worst rain in over 10 years, says seagren. where a device is available to compact the material. While a mini or full-sized paver is ideal, the product has been compacted using anything from shovels COLD CASE and truck tires to vibratory plate compactors, hand tampers and hand rollers. the product is being put through its paces for extreme cold-weather applithe EZ street product has been used to patch and pave roads, parking lots, cation by licensee EZ street Canada, with headquarters in Yellowknife, northairports, military bases and u.s. air force airstrips. west territories. the company was established in 2008. the company began to use the product for mining applications around We found the product almost by chance on the internet, says one of 2000 with a project completed for the Corporacin nacional del Cobre de the companys founding partners, Chris Hunt. i talked to lars on the phone Chile (CodElCo), the countrys government-owned copper mining company. and he sent up some samples which we arranged to test with the northwest We were approached by our producer in santiago who had made contact territories department of transportation. with CodElCo regarding maintenance on the thousands of kilometers of

Cold mix asphalt has exceeded expectations for durability in below-ground applications, making developers optimistic about a bright future for the product.
Hunt initially used the material to patch potholes, repair utility cuts and to pave small overlays. in october 2009, the contractor completed its first full-width test application on a 200-foot stretch of Highway 3 approaching Yellowknife. the project was unique not because it used cold asphalt, but because it used any kind of asphalt at all. most of the roads around Yellowknife are constructed of chipsealcrushed gravel sealed with an oil spray. the traditional road-construction season here is about eight weeks long and this fell considerably outside of that, says Hunt. We worked as both supplier and paving contractor at a temperature of about 10 degrees fahrenheit. the asphalt had been mixed previously and stored near the site at ambient temperature. the paving work has continued to hold up. synergy struck again that same year. Hunts father is fred Hunt, CEo of nunasi Corporation, an aboriginal birthright company with shares owned by all three of the regional inuit associations. nunasi, in turn, owns nuna logistics,
a company specializing in construction of mines, mining roads and remote airports. nuna is responsible for most of the mine site design in Canadas far north, including airstrip construction. We sold a half-interest in the Canadian company to nuna logistics, says Hunt. that was not so much for what EZ street would do for them that year, but for whats about to happen to a whole fleet of airplanes supplying mines in the region. Hunt is talking about the Boeing 737, referred to in the region as the workhorse of the north. northern airport runways are traditionally made of gravel, so the cargo planes are outfitted with a gravel kit that allows them to land on rough terrain. the new 737s are designed with engines at a lower profile, says Hunt. theyre simply not designed to land on gravel. in the meantime, the last of the old 737s are rapidly reaching the end of their service life. thats not only an issue recognized by nuna, but one that the mining companies themselves are discussing with us. they know that the clock is ticking on the 737s and that EZ street has already been applied in the impact zones of some of the busiest runways in the world. AIRSTRIPS NEED UPGRADES While the ultimate decision about paving the airstrips is up to the individual mining companies, nuna has considerable confidence that cold asphalt will be the material chosen to pave the airstrips and is planning to have a cold asphalt mine runway project under its belt by the fall of 2012. some of the mine locations are accessible by ice roads, but Hunt says the company is currently designing a suite of mobile paving equipment thats herkable capable of being airlifted by lockheed C-130 Hercules transport planes. While the Hercules craft can land on gravel, its the 737s that perform the lions share of transport work. a small asphalt plant, paver, and compactor is all we need, says Hunt. one thing were not lacking in Canadas north is aggregate so were working on runway designs that use crushed local rock in the asphalt. Were not only working in consultation with Canadian labs, but the top runway laboratory in florida. the company is also in talks with engineers at several northern diamond mines to perform underground paving similar to EZ streets work in Chile. theyre continually grading and regrading the underground roads in diamond mines, says Hunt. now theyre looking at something more permanent. mines are also dealing with another shortage that has the company ramping up for access roadwork. the mines are facing a shortage, not of construction vehicles, but of large profile tires, says Hunt. those rocky surfaces eat up tires with a vicious appetite, but tires are back-ordered everywhere. if they can extend the service life of the tires of rock crushers and transport trucks by paving the access roads, they can extend the lives of those vehicles. in the meantime, EZ street Canada will be working on two major roadpaving projects in Yellowknife this summer. the company is partnering with aboriginal development group detonCho Corporation to pave three miles of roads in the ndilo community within Yellowknife and another five to eight miles of roads joining it to the community of dettah. our logic in taking on these contracts is that if we can show that these projects can succeed in the harsh environment of Yellowknife, Comments or Suggestions ... well have no problems proIs there an emerging technology in the gas, oil or moting it to the gas, oil and mining industries youd like us to investigate in Tech Perspectives? Send your questions and story mining sector, says Hunt.

Larger Shaft and Bearings Enable Agitator to Handle Greater Loads
By Ed Wodalski
MR Agitators from Chemineer Inc. are made for use in storage and holding tanks, makeup tanks or for simple blending and solids suspension. The mixers feature a parallel-shaft, helical gear design, and oversized output shaft for extended life. The agitators larger-diameter shaft minimizes deflection at the gears, says Kevin Walsh, director of marketing and product management for Chemineer. Larger output shaft tapered roller bearings help increase the life of the B-10 bearing in the gearbox, rated for a minimum of 30,000 hours of L10 bearing life. The gearbox also has a double-lip seal to contain lubrication for greater life and less downtime. The thrust-handling capacity of the gearbox and high-efficiency impellers help reduce energy costs and improve process performance in lower-viscosity blending and solids suspension applications, Walsh says. Other features include cast-iron housing, compliance with AGMA, OSHA, ANSI, IEC, DIN, EU and ATEX standards, and a variety of seal
options. Custom pedestals, couplings, impellers, shafts and steady bearings are available. The unit can be mounted to support beams for open tank operation or to pedestals, plates or flanges for closed tank operation. The MR also can be retrofitted quite easily through our Chemineer Express business to existing commercial gear drive units, Walsh says. 800/643-0641; www.chemineer.com.
