INTRODUCTION
A smaller, lighter & efficient power supply system. Switch-mode power supplies (SMPSs) are frequently used to provide the various levels of DC output power needed for modern applications, and necessary in achieving highly efficient, reliable DC-DC powerconversion systems.
OVERVIEW OF SMPS
Voltage
Linear Power Supplies Voltage regulation via power dissipation Power dissipation creates Heat problems
SMPSs can convert a DC input voltage into a different DC output voltage, depending on the circuit topology. Step-down (Buck). Step-up (Boost). Step-up/down (Buck-boost or Inverter).
Buck DC to DC Converters
Off Mode
Continued
Vout = Vin D
Where: D = PWM dutycycle = Ton / (Ton + Toff) range of duty cycle = 0 to 1
Boost DC to DC Converters
Continued
Vout = Vin / (1- D)
Where: D = PWM dutycycle = Ton / (Ton + Toff) range of duty cycle = 0 to < 0.8
Continued
Vout = -Vin D / (1- D)
Where:
D = PWM dutycycle = Ton / (Ton + Toff) range of duty cycle = 0 to < 0.8
SMPS Advantages
Less Weight
Less Cost Easier PFC support
SMPS Disadvantages
Electromagnetic radiation & noise conduction Complexity in circuit design
Conclusion
In that way Switch-mode power supplies (SMPSs) are frequently used to provide the various levels of DC output power needed for modern applications, and are indispensable in achieving highly efficient, reliable DC-DC power-conversion systems. The versatility of SMPSs solves the problem of converting a standard source voltage into a usable, specified output voltage.
Applications
Machine tool industries. Security systems (Close Circuit Cameras). In computers and other electronic accessories. Support supplies with PLCs. ESPs of power plants.
