EDITORS LETTER
We hope you all are enjoying your summer. Its gone by so quickly we cant believe that its already August. Hopefully you all have had a chance to grab a little down time to enjoy the warmth of the sun & time with family & friends. With the gas prices not being as bad as a few months ago, more people are taking roads trips & doing some travelling. It would be nice if the prices stay down because filling up your tank at well over $4 a gallon definitely puts a hurt on the pockets that arent very deep to begin with. Weve got another great issue for you all to enjoy this month with lots of fantastic events to attend, great articles, pictures & of course, plenty of wonderful advertisers to go visit. Our advertisers are the folks that make this magazine possible for you each & every month with their advertising dollars. Without them, we couldnt be here putting it together. Please stop by, say hello & support themtell them that you saw them here in Thunder Roads too they would really enjoy that. Thanks to you, our readers, for being here with us too without your readership support, we definitely couldnt be here either. For those of you have been with us for awhile, you know that I dont put much of my personal life in here because this magazine is, & always has been, all about YOU & for YOU...not me or my staff. The reason Im mentioning this is because I got married in July to a wonderful man named Randy Collins. I couldnt have asked for a more amazing birthday gift for my 50th birthday. We had a white wedding with all of our kids & grandkids & our best friends as our bridal party...it was beautiful. Pastor Tammy Hayes (one of our On Eagles Wings writers) gave us a wonderful ceremony. To my best friends - Thank you Beth for being there for me & sharing my special day. Gale sorry you couldnt make it up here to Virginia for ityou were in our thoughts all day. Bo thank you for the gorgeous American flag & dedication to our Veteranswe were very touched. Thank you to our kids for being a part of our union & having to wear all white for the day...you all looked like angels! So, either in the next issue or the one after, youll notice my last name will change to Collins. As soon as my name change papers come back from the state, Ill be Kelly CollinsTom, eat your heart out! ha ha) Have a great month all were glad to have you along with us! Be safe, stay happy & have peace & love in all your days. Till we meet again next month Happy Trails

Proud To Be

AN AMERICAN
Generation. We must never forget it. The liberties we enjoy as Americans today were preserved by the bravery of Americans at Normandy nearly seven decades ago. The stories of the Virginians who died on D-Day are told at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford and the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond. Today I urge all Virginians to visit these sites to pay honor to our great patriots, and to thank a World War II veteran, and all veterans, on this, the 67th Anniversary of the Allied landings at Normandy.

RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement today in recognition of the 67th Anniversary of D-Day: Today, on the 67th anniversary of D-Day, we pause to remember and honor the 160,000 Allied military men who courageously landed on the beaches of Normandy and began the bold march across Europe that would defeat Hitler and liberate a continent. 9,000 were wounded or killed on that first day of fierce fighting. Those brave soldiers on the ground were supported by thousands more Allied servicemen and women in the air, sea and at home. My late father, John F. McDonnell, was one of them. Serving with the 306th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in England he helped provide cover and assistance for the landing. I lost my father last year. I know many Virginians of my generation have suffered similar losses recently, as the Greatest Generation slowly marches into history. These losses should remind us of how important it is that we reach out and thank the World War II veterans who are still with us today. The calendar is always turning; their heroism must never be taken for granted or forgotten. Today, I will have the honor of visiting with over 80 of our World War II veterans at the Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond. I look forward to thanking them, on behalf of a grateful Commonwealth, for their sacrifice and selflessness. When the future of this world hung in the balance, young men and women from all across Virginia answered the call to service. They left behind quiet lives, devoted families, burgeoning careers and ongoing educations. They did so without hesitation. They simply did their duty. As we reflect on this historic anniversary today, it is difficult to truly comprehend what the Allied soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy felt and faced in that furious surf and bloodied sand. It is even more remarkable to consider that their individual acts of bravery on that day were replicated time and time again from the Hurtgen Forest to the beach at Iwo Jima. We owe our freedom to the men and women of the Greatest

How to Pack for a Long Motorcycle Trip

There is nothing like hopping on the motorcycle with the promise of summer adventure out on the open road. With no barrier between you and the world, a warm breeze in your face and scenery zipping by, the feeling of total freedom is indescribable. However, packing for a long motorcycle trip requires a little creativity and flexibility because your usual travel luggage, no matter how small it is, just wont fit strapped on the back or in the motorcycle saddlebags. A little strategy, forethought and the following suggestions will help prepare for a memorable wind-in-your-hair motorcycle trip. Determine how many days you will be on the road then throw that number out the window. Regardless of how long you intend to travel, pack as if youre going away for a long weekend with just 3 complete outfits including undergarments. It isnt necessary to bring a new outfit for the entire length of your motorcycle trip. Even if your plans include motorcycle camping, many campgrounds offer laundry facilities or you can head into town for some site-seeing while your cloths go for a spin at the local Laundromat. Line the motorcycle saddlebag with a 13 gallon plastic bag then place your clothes inside. Your clothes will be protected from road-grime, moisture and your entire wardrobe can easily be removed to your hotel room - especially helpful if your saddlebags are not portable. When packing for a motorcycle road trip, make the most of limited luggage space by rolling cloths instead of folding. You will be able to fit a lot more clothing in the motorcycle saddlebags with this technique. If you are bringing a second pair of shoes (recommended) fill them with small items of clothing, like socks or underwear. If camping outdoors is on the itinerary, utilize the sleeping bag as the container for all your bedding and toiletries. Place miniature toiletries in a sealed plastic bag next to your nightwear and towel, roll them up inside your sleeping bag, and strap the roll to the backrest. When its time to hit the hay everything youll need will be handy. Plan for a cold spell or wet weather. Getting caught in the rain out on a motorcycle trip is never pleasant. If you think you might encounter rain, sacrifice one pair of pants to accommodate rain gear. Consider thin, light weight material that wont eat up space in your saddlebags in the event you get caught in a summer squall without a place to take cover. Be sure to include a warm scarf and insulated gloves should the weather take a temporary turn for the worse.

Tech Tips
Cams Part Two
Last month, we defined some common terminology to set the foundation for follow-on discussion. We get more questions on cams than any other subject, second only to exhaust systems. This time we will break this subject up into several parts, owing to space limitations in order to give such a lengthy topic the detail it requires. There is a sacrifice for every gain in every performance build. Understanding what to give up in order to realize substantial gains is the trick. Think in terms of WHERE you want your power whenever selecting a cam. Do you want the power down low, mid-range, or all out in the top end? Low end power is great for hole shots; but when we start approaching that shift point, the torque curve is falling fast. If youre a touring person and want the real power available when youre passing a big rig on a steep grade, mid-range power is the ticket. Top end rigs are better served for the folks running the quarter mile. In general terms, most street applications can get the best of both worlds with mid-range cams. To make a long story increasingly longer (well tie all of this together eventually) but its going to require consumption in small doses. Well also need to cover some of the other performance topics in order to illustrate how components work together. A recipe for disappointment is not doing your homework and using parts that dont play well with others. To start off, lets talk about the four events in cam timing. The least important event with regards to performance is exhaust valve opening. Earlier opening reduces pumping losses, taking advantage of the combustion (power stroke) to push exhaust gases out. Later opening utilizes more of the power stroke to continue driving the piston, but creates more work for the engine. This is one of the reasons stock bikes run hot (well address all the reasons in the near future). The next least important event is exhaust closing. Closing early is one of the factors that will reduce overlap, which is good for emissions but doesnt do well in the performance department. Closing later lends itself to more mid-range and top end power and helps reduce cranking compression in high compression set ups. Intake opening is next in line. Earlier opening allows the exiting exhaust gases to pull the fresh intake charge into the cylinder, resulting in a higher fill (volumetric efficiency). Later opening reduces emissions. The most important event is the closing of the intake valve. It has the most effect on power band and dynamic compression. Earlier closing makes idle and low speed operation nice, but the mid-range on up suffers. Closing later offers more power in the way of cylinder fill (more scavenging) and the ability to run higher compression. Well thats it for this month. Next month, well dive into a cam spec sheet and start looking into applications, including some discussion on lift and duration numbers. FRANCE PARALYZED BY PROTESTING BIKERS Despite pouring rain, nearly 100,000 angry motorcyclists brought every major city in France to a standstill in protest of unfair proposals including requiring every rider to wear a fluorescent yellow high visibility vest, banning traffic filtering (lane splitting), and increasing the size of motorcycle registration plates.Organized by the Federation Francaise des Motards en Colere (FFMC French Federation of Angry Bikers) through its highly efficient network of regional and local offices, Paris alone saw more than 15,000 bikers blocking the heart of the capital, with thousands more paralyzing dozens of cities across the country for hours with demonstrations against the French government and interior minister Claude Guant for their anti-motorcycle policies and proposals. Bikers in France are just fed up with Guants stupid proposals and his I cant see you, I cant hear you attitude, to the extent that almost 100,000 of them have today stood up against their government and paralyzed the whole nation, reported www.ukfrancebikers.com. In response to the largest motorcycle protest in Frances history, road safety director Michle Merli said on national radio that bikers misunderstood the proposed obligation to wear a high visibility vest but would rather propose to riders that they wear a little yellow strap around their arm so that they can be better seen by motorists. UK France bikers.com says they believe that it is not the bikers who have misunderstood the latest governments proposals but rather the French government who continue to severely misunderstand and under-estimate the safety of riders. In other developments in opposition to the lead law, a key Congressional subcommittee has approved a bill to exempt dirtbike and ATV battery terminals and other lead-content parts from the CPSC enforcement. On May 12, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade voted to pass the Enhancing CPSC Authority and Discretion Act, which now goes to the full Committee on Energy and Commerce for further consideration.

NORTH CAROLINA PROHIBITS MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS HB 381 an Act to Prevent Law Enforcement Agencies from establishing patterns for vehicle stops at checking stations based on a particular type of vehicle is now Session Law 2011-216, reports Doc Ski, legislative director for CBA/ABATE of North Carolina and a member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF). The legislation passed unanimously through both houses of the legislature, and was signed into law on June 23 by Governor Beverly Perdue, making North Carolina the second state in a month to enact such laws in response to NHTSA funding of motorcycle-only checkpoints to stop motorcyclists en route to major biker events to check equipment and paperwork. so. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has until August 29 to sign or veto HB 2860 by Rep. Dan Beiser (D-Alton) which would permit motorcycle operators to proceed through a steady red signal that fails to change to green within a reasonable period of time. In order to garner support for the measure, the city of Chicago was exempted from the proposed new law. Kansas also recently passed a dead red law that allows motorcyclists to run inoperable red lights without risking a ticket, and similar legislation has passed in Minnesota (2002), Tennessee (2003), Arkansas (2005), Idaho (2006), Wisconsin (2006), North Carolina (2007), South Carolina (2008), and Missouri (2008). PENNSYLVANIA OKAYS SUNDAY BIKE SALES Governor Tom Corbett marked the midpoint of the 2011 legislative session in July by signing dozens of new laws, including legislation allowing Sunday sales for motorcycle dealers. Effective in sixty days, licensed Pennsylvania motorcycle dealers will be allowed to sell, buy or trade bikes on Sunday. Current law allows the sale of motorcycle parts and other merchandise on Sunday, but not bikes. SB 419 is designed to give Pennsylvania dealers a level playing field with neighboring states that allow Sunday sales. Supporters have said sales have fallen in southeast Pennsylvania stores and have grown in New Jersey and Maryland since Sunday sales began recently in those states. old helmet law appears destined for their governors desk, where its fate is no more certain. The Michigan Senate recently voted 24-14 to approve a measure that would allow motorcyclists 21 or older to go lidless if they have been licensed to operate a motorcycle for at least two years or have passed a safety course, though ABATE of Michigan opposes an amendment requiring $100,000.00 in medical coverage to ride without a helmet, calling it excessive and noting that many insurance companies dont offer such coverage, and if they did the cost would be prohibitive. ABATE says they will fight to have the insurance requirement removed as the bill moves through the house, but though republican Governor Rick Snyder remains noncommittal he has hinted to the Detroit News that hes willing to consider the elimination of Michigans motorcycle helmet law in the context of general auto insurance reforms that hes preparing to propose to lawmakers. Three previous attempts to repeal the helmet law have been vetoed by prior governors, twice by Snyders immediate predecessor democratic governor Jennifer Granholm.

Walk With God

Well here we are in the mist of summer with scorching heat and many of us who are bikers love the evening rides. My wife has just started riding with me this year and what a sweet blessing that is. On July 9th we celebrated our 35th Wedding Anniversary with all our closest friends. We met on the 4th of July weekend back in 1973 and fell in love. We never had the opportunity to date at first but somehow we knew it was right. I was a country boy from Millsboro, Delaware and she was a city girl from Camden, New Jersey. My heritage is British and Native American and hers Italian and German. What a concoction that was. All our children turned out Normal LOL. It has certainly been an interesting journey and it is not over yet. We have walked many different paths over the years but the most interesting path has been the one we have been walking on with the Lord since May 26th 1981. Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Colossians 1:27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Revelation 3:4 You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. Sometimes, the more significant, powerful, or influential someone is, the less you know about him or her. There are some people of influence whose names most of us have never heard, yet they make decisions which affect millions of lives. Enoch, is a Biblical character who we know hardly anything besides his age and genealogy; but we do know this -- that Enoch walked with God -- and then God took him. What an example! Is there anything greater that can be said about someone than, They walked with God? Enochs life was forever marked by this one thing: his personal relationship with the Lord. He somehow lived such a life that was so pleasing to God that He just transformed the mans earthly body and took him to glory without ever experiencing death and this was long before the Holy Spirit was poured out on all flesh. But this ought to be the simple secret of the life of every believer. Walk with Him, because the mystery that was hidden from mankind is now revealed to us through His Son Christ in you the HOPE OF GLORY; so that now, every truly born again soul can walk with the living God through His constantly indwelling presence. We need to realize the opportunity weve been given?

The simplicity of this truth cannot be overstated. The Lord Himself told Martha, One thing is necessary... intimacy with Him; a conscious choice to walk with God, to think about Him, to look at Him, to talk with Him, rest in Him, obey Him, care about him, serve Him, and love Him in a million ways. We are all guaranteed the resurrection that Enoch experienced because Jesus walked with God and totally pleased Him. And we have the choice to follow His example ...just as Enoch did.

Youll come upon villages where churches have steeples with bells, and they are still rung. Dont be surprised if the residents wave to you as you pass by. A typical byway drive would be Route 52 north out of Wytheville. A stop at Big Walker Mountain Lookout is highly recommended the view is breathtaking. Then follow Route 42 southwest to Route 16. At that point, whether you head north or south, youre in for a treat. Going south will take you to Mount Rogers, and this is as lofty as it gets in Virginia 5,729 feet. If you opt for heading north on Route 16, you head toward Tazewell, which typifies towns that can be discovered on Virginias byways. East of Tazewell is Burkes Garden, often called Gods Thumbprint because of its geological formation. Only 260 people live in its 20,000 acres, sharing the area with an abundance of wildlife. At any turn in the road you might find a whitetail deer curiously staring at you. Tourist-watching apparently is a favorite pastime of the wildlife in this relatively unpeopled area. Dont try to cover Southwest Virginia in a byway tour of just a day or two theres just too much of it. And beware of an overload of the senses: the sound of songbirds, the sweet scent of honeysuckle, the feel of warm daytime sun and cool evening breezes and the sight of mountains that touch sun, moon and stars

Wrap It Up: If wrapping an Ace bandage around your sweater puppets is an acceptable shirt for women, then placing a tube sock on your twig & berries should be kosher for men. Am I right guys?!

OKLAHOMA 405-409-5742

I recently took a class at a conference on the parking of vehicles on highways and roadways during an emergency situation. It was extremely informative, these types of classes usually are. During one of the many videos that we viewed during the class, I noticed that there was a motorcycle police officer that was working an accident on a busy suburban boulevard, along with other emergency vehicles on the scene. Many emergency vehicles are the target of secondary collisions at the original accident
