Xerox Products Compatibility with Mac OS X 10.6

Xerox offers a wide variety of print drivers for the newest operating system from Apple Mac OS X 10.6. The following table lists various Xerox products and information regarding Mac OS X 10.6 driver compatibility and availability. The table also provides suggested alternatives for some products; those recommendations are referenced in the table with supporting detail provided at the end of this document. This table will be updated periodically as Xerox releases new Mac OS X 10.6 print drivers. To access drivers for your products, visit http://www.xerox.com/drivers, enter the name of your product, and select the Drivers & Downloads link from the resulting page.

Printing in Mac OS X 10.6

The extension of 64-bit support throughout the operating system is a main feature of Mac OS X 10.6. In many cases, the existing print drivers for Mac OS X 10.5 will function as expected when printing in Mac OS X 10.6. When printing from 64-bit applications, some of the features in the print driver may appear with a line drawn across the feature name. When this occurs, those features cannot be selected for use in the print job. Applications that are included with the operating system, such as TextEdit, Preview, Address Book, Mail, Calculator, Stickies, Font Book, as well as Photo Booth, are current examples of 64-bit applications. Microsoft Office:mac2008 and Adobe Creative Suite, CS4, are examples of 32-bit applications. When upgrading from Mac OS X 10.5 to Mac OS X 10.6, portions of the print drivers, specifically the plugins or PDEs, are removed during the upgrade process. As a result, some features are no longer accessible and unpredictable behavior may occur. To correct this situation, reinstall the print driver package to restore the driver features.

Many Xerox WorkCentre and Production products in the table above have a package known as the Mac OS X Universal Binary Print Driver available today on Xerox.com. This installation package can be used to install Mac OS X 10.5 print drivers. Other products have used PPDs as the primary printing method for previous versions of the Mac OS X operating system. These PPDs can continue to be used with Mac OS X 10.6. When printing from PPDs, choose the Printer Features option in the Print dialog.

Updated Print Drivers for Mac OS X 10.6

Over time, Xerox will be issuing updated drivers that will be fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.6. These drivers will function in full-feature mode, even when printing from 64-bit applications. Check back periodically as future revisions of this document will contain updated release schedules.
