Jamee taking sport to representative levels Weekend bowls

This year Jamee Johnson from Blackall has competed at a representative level in both touch rugby and swimming. Last Sunday along with other students from St Josephs and Blackall State School, Jamee traveled to Longreach for the North West trials after the group were selected in the Central West teams. Jamee played five games at the Longreach trials, including a game between the possible and probable players. Jamee will travel to Townsville at the end of July for the state competition. She is looking forward to the event and has been sticking to the training schedule given to her from the coaching staff, including doing kilometerlong runs and skipping for 10 minute periods. A keen swimmer, in the past Jamee has trained 9 times a week. Earlier in the year, Jamee was invited to attend the North West swimming competition in Cairns. She competed in four events, the 50 metre butterfly, backstroke and freestyle, and the 100 metre freestyle.

Funding swapped for resources at St Josephs

St Josephs Catholic School principal Mr Tim Franzmann took time out this week to showcase some of the latest additions to the school thanks to grants received late last year. The school has recently finished spending the $27,890 for new IT equipment from the Capital Small Grants Program, and $38,000 from the Investing In Our Schools Program from the Queensland Catholic Education Commission. Along with government funding and P&F funds, the grants gave the school a huge boost not only to start working towards building the new multi-purpose sports centre, but gave the school the ability to purchase a wide variety of new resources for the students at the school. We are excited to be able to give the kids the opportunity to access such modern equipment, Mr Tim Franzmann said this week. Compared to city kids, country kids are quite often forgotten about, and we have been lucky to have this money available to spend on such a wide range of resources. I like to be able to offer something different; to give the children the opportunity to have access to things that they may not

Last weekend Clayton OBrien from Blackall competed in the Professional Bull Riders World Challenge at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. The event consisted of two stages, the first being Australia versus the Rest of the World and the second on the following night, the 2009 PBR world challenge. The Friday night First Blood Friday saw Clayton, as a member of the team of the top ten bull riders in Australia, competing against ten international bull riders including riders from Canada, America, Brazil and New Zealand. Subsidy cuts impact BlackallTambo council

The Blackall-Tambo Regional Council said they were disappointed to hear of the Queensland Governments plans to scrap its 10 percent road and drain subsidy. Councils chief executive officer Ken Timms says the move will cost the Blackall-Tambo council $91,000. Ken Timms says they will have to look for that money elsewhere. We never surmised that the roads and drainage grant would disappear, he said. The council is due to present its budget in late July to early August.

Blackall is one of the select few in Queensland that will benefit from Queenslands poet-inresidence for 2009, acclaimed New Zealand poet, musician, producer and teacher of creative writing, Hinemoana Baker. The states fifth poet-in-residence will be based in Queensland from July to September this year and involved in a number of projects in Brisbane, Cairns and Blackall. The poet-in-residence has become a celebrated fixture on the Queensland literary calendar, Premier Anna Bligh said. This program has benefited Queensland writers and poets by opening up new links and partnerships for them with the international literary community. It is also a chance for international poets to play a part in our own cultural activities. During her time here Ms Baker will have a key role at literary events including the Queensland Poetry Festival and the Brisbane Writers Festival, in addition to activities at the Queensland Writers Centre. The Bligh Government provides $50,000 for the 2009 poet-inresidence program, which is administered by Queensland Writers Centre in partnership with the Queensland Poetry Festival, Brisbane Writers Festival and the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.

Blackall to host residency with Council requests forms for regional internationally acclaimed poet
Ms Bakers first poetry collection was co-published in New Zealand by Victoria University Press and in the US by Perceval Press, the publishing house of actor and artist Viggo Mortensen. Her poems have been chosen for the 2004, 2006 and 2008 Best New Zealand Poems online magazine, and have appeared in numerous other anthologies. With a history steeped in Maori and Pakeha (non-Maori) culture, Hinemoana brings a powerful and sensitive, bi-lingual voice to Queensland this year, one which speaks of the deep connections with bloodlines and place, said Queensland Writers Centre Chair, Theodora Le Souquet. We are truly privileged to have Ms Baker accept our invitation, she said. We anticipate that the poet-inresidence will create a legacy of new work and creative partnerships that will have a far-reaching impact on Queensland literature. The Blackall-Tambo Regional Council is busy putting together a telephone book which will cover the Blackall Tambo Region. Forms have been sent out to the community via a householder flyer. To ensure that this effort results in comprehensive coverage of the region, all residents are encouraged to return their forms to the appropriate offices. If community members did not receive a form or require another, these can be obtained by emailing eco@btrc.qld.gov.au or phoning 4654 6976 and a form can be faxed out. Forms may be picked up and dropped off at the Blackall Tambo Regional Council offices in Blackall or Tambo, Tambo Education Centre, Blackall Visitor Information Centre, Blackall and Tambo Libraries or 60s and Better in Blackall.

Seminar series on managing flystrike

Managing the risk of breech fly strike will be the focus of a major seminar series throughout Queensland sheep regions including Blackall in July. The Leading Sheep initiative is designed to inform producers of the latest technology and strategies being developed as an alternative to mulesing. Events will be held in Blackall, Longreach, Quilpie, Wyandra, Bollon and Talwood. The chief speaker will be Dr Jen Smith from CSIRO at Armidale. Dr Smith is leader of the national Breeding for Breech Strike Resistance project, an AWI funded project. Jemma Junk, NSW DPI, will provide information on the flow of genetic change through a commercial flock when incorporating wrinkle scores into the breeding objective. The new Australian Sheep Breeding Values for skin wrinkle will also be discussed. Dr Smith said scientists were making good progress in identifying genetic traits that could reduce the risk of fly strike. Breeding will be part of an integrated package of measures to control fly strike and producers will select the mix that works best for their individual enterprise, Dr Smith said. We have already achieved a significant reduction in the amount of blowfly strike in our selected lines this summer. It is very promising that producers can select sheep for reduced susceptibly to blow fly while increasing wool productivity. Dr David Counsell, a farm consultant and Barcaldine sheep producer, will provide information on chemical use, animal health and flock production management, including the latest information on the use of clips. Each event will also have input from local leading producers who will describe their experiences in managing fly strike, including ceasing mulesing. The Blackall seminar will be held on July 15 at the Blackall

Club from 11am to 3.30pm. Other seminars will be held between July 16 and 30 in Longreach at the Rosebank Research Station, Quilpie at the Shire Hall, Wyandra at the Wyandra Hall, Bollon at the Tennis Club and Talwood at the Shire Hall. To register, contact David Counsell on 0427 073 606 or Geoff Knights on 4620 8121.

School News
The Students have spent this week in Brisbane on camp. The 7 days were spent visiting art galleries, museums, belly dancers, channel 10 studios, backstage tours of the Powerhouse Theatre & QPAC, Southbank cinemas, University of Queensland, QLD Academy of Creative Industries, Shakespearean Rock Operas, Theatre with no seats, Paris Opera Ballet, Laser Tag, Gaming Arcades and much more. The camp is an exciting time for Blackall Arts Students and the trip was affordable for parents due to support from Blackall State School P&C, PCAP, Drought Assistance Fund and student fundraising. Manual arts students at the school have been putting the finishing touches on their work and assessment tasks. The 6/7 class are taking home a serviette holder for use at picnics and barbeques. The 8/9s have completed sandwich trays and spice racks for use in the kitchen. The year 10-12 class have finished most of their practical work on their multi cylinder engines and are reshaping the old metal work room into a welding/ mechanics workshop. During Education Week, some of the parents tried their hand at making a small picture frame.

Blackall to hear from experts at New equipment for school continued from page 1 state engineering conference choices.
Residents in Blackall-Tambo will have the opportunity to benefit from the experts and delegates attending the annual state conference of the Institute of Public Works Engineers in Barcaldine next week. The social opportunity will be held at the Blackall Woolscour on Thursday July 2 from 6pm and will include a tour of the Woolscour facilities as a demonstration of regional engineering. The state conference is being jointly hosted by local consulting engineering firm George Bourne & Associates, the Department of Transport & Main Roads and Barcaldine Regional Council. Chairman of the organising committee Mr Graeme Wills of George Bourne & Associates said that with two weeks to go more than 200 delegates had registered for the three day conference. One of two keynote speakers for the conference is Amanda Gore whose expertise lies in transforming the spirit of people and cultures by changing attitudes, improving processes, relationships and connecting people. Professor John Martin from the Centre for Sustainable Regional Communities based at LaTrobe Universities is also a keynote speaker. Professor Martin has consulted to and advised many local governments across Australia, Asia, the Pacific and South Africa covering most aspects of strategy, leadership and management in Councils and their organisations. Over the 3 days, delegates will hear from presenters from across Australia sharing information on cultural heritage, leadership, financial sustainability of local government in Queensland and exchanging and sharing knowledge between the practitioners attending the conference. The conference will culminate with a presentation of excellence awards. The awards acknowledge special projects and personalities which stand out above the rest in public sector engineering in Queensland. These accolades will be bestowed on people who have strived to provide a better quality of life for all Queenslanders through their day to day activities working within the public sector and particularly within local government across the state. Further technology has been added to the classrooms by means of 10 new laptops available to the preps through to year 6/7s. The laptops come with webcameras, headphones and mice and enable the teachers to use programs such as Kahootz and Comic Life with the students. The programs are a really good assessment option for those kids who have more visual or practical learning styles, Tim said. The schools sports equipment has also been upgraded and broadened including additions of archery, hockey, golf, AFL and other sporting equipment. Both the students and staff are enjoying making the most of all of the schools new equipment.

A Professor of Climate Change at Adelaide University thinks we should halve Australias domestic ruminant numbers within two years. When we have removed our cattle sheep and goats, when water buy-back has diverted our irrigation water to Environmental Flows, and when Australia is covered by regrowth scrub, carbon credit forests, ethanol crop farms, protected remnant vegetation, Wilderness NoGo areas, National Parks, aboriginal reserves, World Heritage Areas, marine parks and Wild Rivers Reserves - I have just one question? What are we, and the world, going to eat?
