THE ACADEMY OF LDS DENTISTS NEWSLETTER SpRINg 2011 Presidents message

We hope that this note finds you enjoying the year, both in your practice and with your loved ones. For a number of years, I have had the opportunity to see the great benefit that comes to both of those parts of our lives at our annual conferences. Many dentists attend for the great continuing education experience that it offers (up to 14 hours of credit) and the chance to hear seven great, nationally acclaimed speakers in only a two-day seminar with a very unique format. Many bring their spouses so they likewise can enjoy a stimulating learning and sharing experience with other spouses who have similar backgrounds and values. There are also great programs for the children and youth that draw them back for the fun experience year after year. They often make lasting friendships with youth from all over the country. The beautiful setting and participation in enjoyable, wellcoordinated activities helps them to cherish the feeling of doing good things with other great families. A number of our clinicians through the years have commented when they speak at the conference that there is such a unique feeling and camaraderie in their experience with our group. Many are interested in the service projects that are displayed. As they attend our evening dinner and fireside and the special service luncheon, they express a desire for that type of experience for their families. For those who have attended this conference before, we look forward to seeing you again. Those who havent been with us at a conference, we encourage you to come and enjoy this entire life- and practice-enhancing event with your friends, and if possible, your family members. It always proves to be a memorable and valuable experience for all who attend. We are seeing a lot of growth in the Academy. We hear of so many who even through these challenging times are stretching to serve and bless others lives. Many of you are very creative in sharing your professional skills and talents so others can enjoy better dental health. That is the true spirit of the Academy. Thank you. Please write to the Academy Leadership at LDSDentists@gmail.com and share some of your successes and great experiences so others can be taught and inspired to do similar things in their locale or in areas abroad. Furthermore, our website at www.AcademyofLDSDentists.com is becoming a real resource and communication tool. Please share with us your ideas of ways in which it can better serve you. We are sure that your practice, your family, and your networking and renewed friendships with other good dentists can be very positively affected as you join with our Academy and attend the 34th Annual Conference, August 1213, 2011. I look forward to seeing you there! With best wishes,

is the founder and previous owner of DenMat. As a devout and altruistic Christian, he has been very impressed with our Academy. His comments to Gordon about the Academy will be of interest to you.
Hi, Gordon, I enjoyed speaking with you last week, and I am pleased to tell you and everyone why I enjoy the LDS programs so much. As you know, my first experience with the LDS convention was as a clinician; of course, I listened to all the other speakers, too. At all LDS conventions Ive attended, two things impressed me that I havent found in other conventions. The focus at most conventions is how to set and attain goals, make more money, communicate better and learn a new technique. The LDS conventions covered these topics very well, too, but the focus was on people. It was apparent that LDS dentists believe in caring for their patients with great respect and concern, striving to provide higher quality care. They were encouraged in this philosophy by their peers. They treat people, real human beings, not just patients. I was especially impressed that LDS dentists live what they believe and do so much to help people in impoverished areas. When I left these meetings, I felt I was better for having participated and for becoming acquainted with so many fine dentists. I had broadened my personal and dental skills and felt good about what I could do for patients as a result of having attended those gatherings. The attendees, the instructors, the tone and the distinctive quality of the meetings all promoted caring, quality treatment for dental patients. I would encourage anyone who is given the opportunity to attend a LDS meeting to do so. Best wishes, (Signed: Bob) Robert lbsen, DDS I enjoy that format because my time is spent meaningfully, getting a great deal of useful information in a short period of time. The program attracts dentists from all across the country. I suppose, however, that many local dentists are unaware that this great program is taking place in their own backyard each year. Not only is the continuing education portion of the conference outstanding, it is a great family event with wonderful programs for spouses and children. I encourage all who can to participate in this exceptional meeting.

I have attended the LDS Academy almost since its beginning, when we could all fit into one auditorium. I formerly returned because of the unique format that allows participation in multiple presentations. The pearls gathered over the years have added much to my professional and spiritual life. But I have learned that a greater intrinsic value now stimulates my attendance: my friends from Arizona, California, New Mexico, Idaho, etc. As a good friend of mine likes to say, Its always fun to be with the good guys!

Going to the LDS Academy conference last year was a great experience for me as a new dentist. I really like the schedule of the conference, as it is good to hear an overview of each topic and then be able to choose which ones I wanted to go to in the afternoon. Some other conferences I have been to seem a bit overwhelming, but I felt that this one was just the right size. There was a wide variety of interesting speakers, and I could always find one I wanted to go to. It was also fun to see some friends from dental school and talk with them about their experiences after graduation. It was nice to meet other dentists from my area and begin to get more of a network together. The food was really good, and I enjoyed the fireside. I really enjoyed my experience and will definitely be going back in the future, especially at such a good price for newer dentists.

I consider the Academy of LDS Dentists Conference to be one of the premiere continuing education opportunities available in the country. Each year the program includes a group of exceptional, nationally recognized clinicians. The format of the program, however, is what makes it unique. The morning overview session allows each presenter to give you a snapshot of his or her presentation, including many pearls of knowledge, and the two-hour afternoon sessions allow time only for the meat of each presentation, minus the fluff. 3

I attend the yearly Conference of the Academy of LDS Dentists. I suggest that the reasons I attend apply to dental specialists in general: the CE is fabulous, just what we need, and you might be interested in the service opportunities, which are life changing. You will tremendously benefit from the August 1213 (Friday and Saturday) Academy Conference. Come and enjoy! Each year as I leave the Academy Conference, I think that I have been one of those who have benefitted the most. Throughout the year, I focus on periodontics and implant dentistry, just as you focus on your specialty, and most of our training comes from our specialty organizations. I feel that these two days with the Academy of LDS Dentists make me a better dental specialist, because I get concise updates in all the other fields of dentistry. You and I serve patients best if we know more about all aspects of dentistry, not just our own fields of expertise. Most dental service expeditions need dental specialists. Whether the service is providing dental care for 600 future missionaries in a stake center in Honduras, or teaching in dental schools in Uganda or Rwanda, or working for a week on orphans and pre-missionaries in Guatemala City, you are needed. Please come to the Academy meeting to learn of the opportunities to go all over the world to serve.

Formerly from Pocatello, ID; currently he and his wife are on a mission in Jordan. They previously have served in La Paz, Bolivia (with Deseret International).
This is a reminder to myself and hopefully other specialists that the LDS Dental Academy meetings reach across the spectrum of dentistry with up-to-date instruction covering topics from nutrition, pathology and pharmacology to the latest materials and techniques. I personally have gained much from periodontics lectures on soft tissue management related to implants, as well as presentations on annual practice management and financial help. The general dentistry restorative topics help me to be conversant with referring dentists as to what they need from the surgeon. This is all well and good, but honestly, the best part of the Academy meetings was making and renewing friendships, meeting todays dental leaders, and having a ladies program that my wife could hardly wait to tell me about. The promotion of service projects during the noon luncheon and breaks, plus the people sharing experiences, were a major motivation for our familys beginning adventures in dental service. Academy leaders helped prepare us with teaching materials, insights about our destination countries, plus financial assistance with special projects. I get more bang for my buck with LDS Dental Academy meetings than any others I have attended.

by Lisa Jenkins, Hygienist; Orem, Utah
As the primary educators in the dental office, hygienists get to stay up-to-date on all aspects of dentistry. The Academy of LDS Dentists annual conference is the perfect opportunity to do this! This year, well not only learn about some of the latest research in perio, but also review other dental topics we frequently discuss with our patients but rarely address among hygienists. I am attending this years conference for three reasons: 1. To obtain continuing education from some of the best dental educators in the nation; 2. To associate with other outstanding dentists and hygienists in the profession; and 4 3. To learn about and get involved in the countless opportunities for hygienists to serve our local and international communities. This conference provides great food, inviting facilities, great camaraderie and a fantastic fireside. Just as hygienists are invaluable to the dental profession, the annual conference is essential for hygienists. We hope to see you there!

As you talk to your patients about our humanitarian services, some of them may be financially able to contribute funds to the Academy. If your patients collectively donate a total of $5,000 due to your influence, your conference fee will be waived. To help you start a conversation with patients, the Academy developed a brochure last year, and distributed copies at the last August Conference. If you would like some to hand out selectively to your patients, contact the Academy. (Contact information is listed in #2 below.) The brochure explains the humanitarian services that the Academy performs in various areas of the world and encourages donations to the fund. Contributions to these humanitarian efforts can be made to the Academy in two different ways: 1. At the Academys website at www.AcademyofLDSDentists.com under Service, the reader can click on Make a Donation and fill out the Make a Donation form available there; or 2. Individuals can contact the executive director at 801-889-7012, or write to LDSDentists@gmail.com to donate funds or to be sent the brochures mentioned above.
