The National Science Olympiad Committee and SAASTE -KZN will be holding the 15TH SOUTH AFRICAN SCIENCE OLYMPIADS IN NATURAL, LIFE & PHYSICAL SCIENCES IN 2011 and the organisers take pleasure in extending an invitation to your school to participate in the contests.

The development of general knowledge, skills, attitudes and values in the spirit of OBE. The development of Science to foster problem solving and creative thinking skills. To empower teachers with a wide range of skills and data response types of questions.

RULES FOR PARTICIPATION AND ENTRY :


1. A MINIMUM OF 10 ENTRIES PER GRADE is required. A minimum of 10 entries makes schools eligible for school and teacher awards. For less than 10 entries per grade, an additional amount of R 15 per grade MUST be enclosed. Schools SHOULD NOT LIMIT ENTRIES. ALL pupils should be encouraged to enter. Entries for the final round must be made on the attached forms and done SEPARATELY FOR EACH GRADE. Kindly ensure that NAMES are entered correctly AS PER CLASS REGISTER. The pupils correct names are required for our records. Complete each form in TRIPLICATE and RETAIN ONE COPY of each grade's entry for your records. Photocopies may be used for further entries. Please make & send copies to your neighbouring & feeder schools, so that they could also enter and participate, in this National strategy to improve science. Entry fees (R 15 per candidate) are used to cover the cost of: CORRESPONDENCE, COMMUNICATION, PRINTING, TYPESETTING, POSTAGE OF ENTRY FORMS & QUESTION PAPERS, MARKING, PROCESSING OF RESULTS, AWARDS AND CERTIFICATES. Make crossed cheques or postal orders payable to: NATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD. OR Deposit in : Standard Bank [Acc. No. 052624714, Branch Code 3826 (Overport)] Post/Fax Copy of Receipt/deposit slip. BOX 113, DESAINAGAR, 4405, KZN It would be advisable to REGISTER the mail. You will be safeguarding your entry by post if you do. The organisers will not be held responsible for the loss of ordinary mail. FAXED ENTRIES MUST BE FOLLOWED BY THE ORIGINAL AND DUPLICATE ENTRIES IN THE POST. The correct addresses, postal codes, telephone nos and other details (Teachers & Principals) must be filled in to avoid administrative problems and inadequate contact details. FAXED COPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE AS FINAL ENTRIES. Proof of payment must accompany all entries.

STRUCTURE OF PAPER AND PROGRAMME 1. Questions will be based mainly on the core knowledge and concepts as outlined in the NCS. Questions cater for a developmental approach and encourage the participation of average learners. 2. Candidates will answer 25 OBJECTIVE TYPE QUESTIONS (MCQs) on special answer sheets. 3. Duration of paper: 2 hrs (all grades) 4. Principals are kindly requested to arrange invigilators who DO NOT teach Science OR LIFE SCIENCES. 5. The question papers and answer sheets will be despatched in AUGUST 2011. If schools do not receive the question papers by WEDNESDAY 24 August 2011, urgently contact the organisers on 083 2677055 (Robin) or 083 556 7963 (Premi) (or Vivek on 0829363163 or Freddy on 031 4098614 (Physical Science papers) 6. Collection centres: Schools near one of the centres (part of KZN) below must collect the question papers from the centre by Thursday 25 AUGUST 2011. AWARDS
1. PLATINUM (CERTIFICATES AND MEDALS) will awarded to all candidates who obtain a mark of 90% or more. GOLD (CERTIFICATES AND MEDALS) will be awarded to all candidates who obtain a mark of 80% to 89%. SILVER CERTIFICATES ONLY will be awarded to all candidates who obtain a mark of 60% TO 79%. Each SCHOOL will ALSO receive a PARTICIPATION CERTIFICATE and a LEARNERS PARTICIPATION CERTIFICATE (template ONLY), which you may use to make copies and hand out to other learner=s with less than 60%. Awards will be made to the TOP THREE SCHOOLS IN EACH GRADE, whose candidates have attained the best ten (10) positions on aggregate in each grade. Schools with less than 10 entries in a grade will not be considered for aggregate awards in that grade. Other special awards to TOP PUPILS (1ST, 2ND AND 3RD ), SCHOOL (HIGHEST NUMBER OF ENTRIES in any one grade) and TEACHERS (FIRST THREE in each grade) will be made at the discretion of the organisers. Revision booklets (2004 to 2007 Question Papers), for each of Grades 4 11 may be ordered at R20 each (minimum 4 booklets per order). Orders must be placed 30 days in advance of expected delivery.

The DST (Department of Science & Technology and DoE (Department of Education, in partnership with SAASTE (South African Association of Science & Technology Educators) recognise the OLYMPIADS as a part of their Youth into Science strategy, and encourage all learners to participate in Olympiads. A data base of all schools that participate in the Science Olympiads is currently being compiled, so that the DoE, DST could embark on programmes t encourage learners (especially African and Girl learners to participate and excel in Science.

SAASTE is the only recognised Professional body for science educators in the country.
This OLYMPIAD is the only officially recognised SCIENCE OLYMPIAD for Grades 4 to 11, and is recognised at Provincial, National, DoE and DST levels, as approved by cabinet in their Collaboration agreement and Plan for the Cabinet=s Youth into Science Strategy. Participants in competitions of this nature are credited/recognised by tertiary institutions and bursars, with winners qualifying for additional points and fee discounts. Olympiad participants are generally viewed favourably by companies because of the recognition of their creative talents and intellect. We look forward to your participation. ROBIN N.
