Not only is money raised, but volunteers also endeavor to raise public awareness of the problems of world hunger. The motto We walk because they walk sums up the spirit of the volunteers as they strive to make a difference. One very important aspect of the CROP Walk is the fact that of all the money raised stays in the local community. In our area this is the Helping Hands food pantry. In the 10 years of our local walk, thousands of dollars have been donated. The rest

On June 8, Big Prairie Township held their monthly Crime Watch meeting. The guest speaker was Detective Deputy Wes Bierling of the Central Michigan Enforcement Drug Team. We had increased attendance for this meeting and it was a very informative evening with a lot of questions asked and answered. Det. Bierling spoke about the drug problem in the county and township which consist mostly of marijuana, prescription drugs, and crack cocaine. He explained the Drug Enforcement Team and how they operate and also about how a person acts when they are a meth addict. Most of all, he spoke about how citizen awareness has been a big help in dealing with our county and township drug problem. Big Prairie Trustee Mary Anderson and Treasurer Jan Westfield want our residents to know this program is aimed at showing our residents how to protect themselves, and they can learn this with the variety of topics and speakers we have with this program. The next Crime Watch will be on July 30 at 1 p.m. with a picnic at the Operators Park at Hardy Dam. The Newaygo County Marine Patrol will put on a demonstration. This will be a great afternoon

of the money goes to Church World Services to help found their many programs both in the u.S. and throughout the world. The CROP Walk works by volunteers pledging to not only walk but also to actively solicit monetary pledges. Many people can sponsor one walker. In this way many can contribute to this worthwhile cause without actually walking themselves. Walk organizers stress this is a community event and is strictly a volunteer effort. Community support is essential as are the volunteers that make it work. This is a wonderful undertaking for an individual looking to make a difference or a group seeking a worthwhile project. For more information, interested parties are urged to contact Heritage united Methodist Church at (231) 937-4310 or attend the meeting on 7/28 at HuMC, 19931 W. Kendaville Rd. safe, sizzling summer season

n State fire marshal offers safety tips for outdoor grilling

RIVER VALLEY NEWS SHOPPER MONDAY, JULY 11, 2011

LANSING Outdoor grilling is a great way to enjoy the taste of summer and State Fire Marshal Ronald R. Farr today issued guidelines for safe grilling all season long. Always think safety first and use common sense before lighting up the grill, said Farr. July is customarily the peak month for grill fires. Every year people are killed or injured in fires caused by malfunction or careless use of grills. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments respond to an average 7,700 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues each year. Gas grills arent any safer than other grills, in fact six out of seven grill fires involve a gas grill, Farr said. The leading contributing factor to these fires was a leak or break in hoses or other equipment, so maintenance is particularly important with gas grills to protect yourself and your family. Farr said that the popular gas grills are safe and convenient when used properly but bring into play liquid propane (LP) gas thats pressurized and requires special handling and storage. Charcoal grills are still preferred by some people and can also be potentially dangerous when not used properly. Follow these important tips for safe grilling: n Always grill outdoors. NEVER grill indoors or in the garage. In addition to the obvious fire hazard, grills release carbon monoxide, the deadly, odorless, colorless gas. n Follow manufacturer instructions on setup and maintenance. n Set up the grill in an open area and on a level surface at least 10 feet away

to use the grill until its serviced by a professional. n Before filling an LP cylinder, check it for dents or gouges. Dont overfill the cylinder. n NEVER turn on the gas when the lid is closed. The propane may build up inside, and when ignited, the lid could blow off or a fireball can explode in your face. n If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call 911. Do not move the grill. n Never store propane gas cylinders in buildings or garages. If you store a gas grill inside during the winter, disconnect the cylinder and leave it outside. n When finished with the grill, turn off the barbecue burners and the propane cylinder.

from your house, garage, deck, overhanging eaves, branches, hanging baskets and backyard furniture. n Never use a grill on a balcony. n Keep children and pets well away from the grill area. n Be aware of the wind blowing sparks. n Keep a fire extinguisher close by and know how to use it; keep a spray bottle or bucket of water handy for minor flare ups. n Never leave the grill unattended. Stay focused solely on grilling; dont try and multi-task with other food preparation or chores. n Use grilling tools with long handles and keep several handy. n Dont overload your grill with food.

Excessive fat and grease dripping on the flames can ignite large flare ups leading to fire. n Keep your grill and trays below the grill clean. Grease and fat build up only provide more fuel for a fire. n Never try and fight a fire yourself or waste time figuring out how to use a fire extinguisher. Call 911 for expert help and let the fire department do its job. Gas grill safety n Check gas tank hoses for leaks before first use each year. Applying a light soap and water solution will reveal any leaking propane. Never use a match to check for leaks. If you detect a leak, turn off the gas immediately and dont attempt

Charcoal grill safety n If using a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid and never add it or any other flammable liquids to the fire once the coals are burning. n Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. n Never use gasoline or kerosene to start the fire. n There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use. n Always use charcoal grills in a sellventilated area. Charcoal briquettes give off deadly carbon monoxide gas. n To stop flare ups, move cooking grid up and spread out coals. n Keep paper, wood and plastic away from the grill. n After grilling, let the coals burn out completely and let ashes cool for 48 hours before disposing in a metal container. Or soak partially cooled ashes completely in water before disposal. In 2009 more than 5,400 people died in vehicle crashes linked to cellphone use, and many more were injured. If your employee is texting or talking, working with their cell phone while driving, and has or causes an accident or injury, its you, the employer, who could be allowing or creating a dangerous workplace behavior. Which makes you liable for injuries. Which the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA, for short) is eager to nd out. Which will cost you plenty because you failed to take all necessary steps to prevent them.

So 28 of every 100 kids report theyve had or almost had an accident involving texting or talking. It used to be that the younger the employee, the more cell phone calls and texting. Not now. Now, those teen statistics could apply to us all. Because those young users grew older, cell phones got easier to use, and older people all got cell phones. Pretty much every employee has a

RIVER VALLEY NEWS SHOPPER MONDAY, JULY 11, 2011

A reader recently asked about Hair. Socially hair is a very important thing. Every day I hear complaints about hair. Too much. Too much in the wrong places. Too little in the right places. Too curly. Too Straight. The wrong color. And on and on. In the animal world hair and feathers are used to attract mates and partners. It is not so different with us human animals. Healthy hair requires certain conditions. Hair is extruded up from the hair follicle. In the follicle all the ingredients to make the hair shaft are assembled, much like the process of tooth paste being extruded out through the top of the tube. If the correct ingredients are not brought to the hair follicle by the blood vessels, normal hair cannot be produced. So, good blood ow is needed. Protein, amino acids, fats, oils, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins are all needed to create this amazing lament, hair. The little factories that make the bers of hair are affected by hormones. Thyroid, testosterone, progesterone, estrogen and many more hormones are like a labor force that may call a strike. They are affected by stress. Stress management is a must for balanced hormones. If needed get a saliva test and take natural Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement if the hormones are out of balance. Existing hair can be damaged and broken by physical trauma like hair twirling or wearing caps and hair bands. Hair shafts can also be damaged by the chemicals in hair care products. Genetics play a role. So in order to have great healthy hair on your head be sure to pick the right parents. Oh, well. Even if you did not pick the right parents, we know from Epigenetics, that keeping a healthy terrain around the hair follicle may overcome some of the effects of the bad hair genetics. Elimination of toxins in the blood is a must. Toxins like tobacco, alcohol, coffee, pop, and inammatory foods have a huge negative impact on our hair. Other things like lead, mercury, cadmium, trans fats, chemicals from shampoo, perm solutions, coloring all can hurt the hair as it is being made. Trans fats which include vegetable oil, deep fried food, animal fat (especially feed-lot beef and pork) are damaging to hair. Over washing the hair, lack of brushing (scalp oil is brought down the hair shaft by brushing), excess heat and too much direct sunshine can fry the hair. Nutrients, amino acids, healthy oils, and sugars are needed. Hair has to have oils like olive oil and ax seed oil, as well as ber and complex carbohydrates from vegetables. Chondritin, Glucosamine, and MSM (which we get from animal cartilage and gelatin) are essential for healthy hair, skin, and nails. Silica, silver, tin, other trace minerals, Vitamins E and D3 are a must. Chia seed gel is highly benecial. Your hair is a good barometer of the health of the rest of your body. If it is unhealthy, thin, weak and wispy, maybe other things are not so healthy either. Make some changes. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Have lots of love but not a lot of room? Volunteers are always appreciated!

Alexis is a beautiful spirited young (4 month) old mixed girl who got lost and was picked up on June 27th. We hope her old owner is looking for her. She weighs about 25 pounds and is wearing a brown collar. Alexis has a black and white coat and is very friendly. Her adoption date is July 5th, unless she goes to her home before that date. She will have basic shots and be spayed. Come to the shelter and meet her! ID# 11/05/52 added 06/29/2011

Go to www.petnder.com/shelters/montcalm.html for a full list of adoptable animals.

You have choices in advertising. Let us help you choose wisely.

AM? FM? HD? Satellite? CD? MP3? Your customers have lots of choices when deciding what to listen to. When you need to reach those customers you could choose radio. But should you choose AM, FM, HD, or Satellite? Then which format should you choose: Adult Contemporary, Smooth Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, Country, Classical, News, Talk, Urban, Oldies, Latin, Religious, or Sports? Once youve chosen the medium and the format youll need to select the right stations. How many stations do you listen to? Do your customers listen to the same ones? Do you need a 30 or 60 second spot?
