A Neighborhood for 21st Century

In this age of 21st century there is need to have a safe, secured, accessible and environment friendly Neighborhood, Which have less congestion, pollution, vehicles-pedestrian conflict and time delays in reaching from one part to other within the Neighborhood as well as to the other parts of the city. As for the countries like Pakistan; there is the lack of natural resources like fuel, coal and others. So there is need to adopt the mechanism for spending the life in better way with the minimum consumption of these resources. Keeping, the whole scenario and the study of existing neighborhoods, in mind we designed a neighborhood to fulfill the public demand in 21st century. It includes almost all the facilities that are the requirements of public.

In addition to it the environmental areas are provided in which vehicles movement is not allowed, anyhow vehicles can move around these areas. There are tracks for pedestrian movement through which people can move within the neighborhood without conflicting with vehicular traffic. The pattern of threes tracks are zig zag, and circular at some places, by providing the different variety of flower beds along both sides. Trees, in beautiful pattern are also planted alongside the tracks.

There is also provision of cycle tracks, in segregation, along with these pedestrian paths. As cycle is an environment friendly mode of transportation, so there is need to promote cycling for the movement within the neighborhood by providing beautiful and attractive cycle tracks and short routes. Cycling not only save the travel cost but also saves the environment from pollution. It will also reduce the traffic congestion on the road, the major current issue almost in all big cities of Pakistan.

Land-use Distribution
Land uses in the sub neighborhood are distributed according to the following criteria Land-use Commercial and Public buildings Open Spaces Roads +streets+ pedestrian paths Residential Total area %age 8 8 34 50 100 Areas(acers) 11.68 11.68 49.64 73 146

The distribution of plots in the proposed sub neighborhood is: Size of plot Dimension No. of plots 20 Marla 10 Marla 7 Marla 5 Marla 3 Marla Total 5090 3565 3546 2545 2030 384 64 368 256 96 1168

The total no of plots are 1168 in the neighborhood. The height allowed is up to 30 (double storey). So, in one house two hose holds may reside. The total number of 2336 households may reside in the proposed Sub Neighborhood. As the household size in Pakistan is 7, so the proposed sub neighborhood provides accommodation for 16352 population.

For 16352 population the facilities like, Schools, Mosques, Dispensaries, Shopping marts etc. have been provided. The major problem in the most of the existing housing schemes is that the facilities in the schemes are provided by considering the population size according to number of plots in the scheme. It is one of the major causes which contribute in lacking the facilities in the neighborhood. This results in congestion, noise pollution and many other nuisances for the residences. The proposed neighborhood compensates all these problems. The other major problem for the lack of facilities we find that the facilities were proposed in the plan but they were not actually build on the ground due to lack of enforcement of the plan, corruption or due to some vested interests of implemented authority, the great tragedy in our country. This problem will be solved by making a separate plan implementing authority that will ensure the implementation according to the proposed plan.
