Conditions Governing the Award of the Carl & Emily Fuchs Doctoral Scholarships and Application Process Guidelines ELIGIBILITY The Carl Fuchs and Emily Fuchs Doctoral Scholarships are available to post-graduate students who have already, or intend to register for Doctoral studies at a local South African university/university of technology only (and not for any studies abroad). The two scholarships are awarded bi-annually, in any academic field of study/Doctoral program formally registered with a South African university. The Foundation annually invites applications from the various faculties at local Higher Education institutions for the next academic year. R100 000 per annum for each of the two scholarships. Each scholarship is awarded for a period of 2 years, of which the second round is payable at the discretion of the Foundation and subject to satisfactory academic performance (based on the submission of a progress report and as motivated/substantiated by the Promoter of the student). Any extension thereafter is at the sole discretion of the Foundation. Only South African citizens may apply and the scholarships are awarded based on the following selection criteria:

SELECTION CRITERIA
Academic achievement/excellence (a minimum requirement of a Masters degree, passed with distinction or 75% average) Economic merit (preference will be given to economically deprived applicants). Applicants must also be willing to be interviewed by a selection panel (typically in the November of the year preceding the study), during which qualities of academic insight, leadership, communication skills and the merit of the proposed study/research project will be assessed. CONDITIONS The scholarship is awarded for full and/or part-time Doctoral studies and candidates may either be at the commencement (but already accepted/enrolled), or at a more advanced stage of their studies/research. Applicants will also be required to enter into an agreement, confirming his/her undertaking to apply the benefits of their studies/research outcomes as part of a career based in South Africa for a minimum period equal to the tenure of the scholarship.
APPLICATION PROCESSThe correctly and comprehensively completed application form should be accompanied by a photograph, a formal academic record of all previous studies, two confidential (sealed separately) referee reports, confirmation of acceptance for the Doctoral study/program and an Executive Summary of the proposed research project/study. The selection panel date for 2010 has been scheduled for 2 November 2010 in Johannesburg.

One referee should be the Head of the University Department in which you completed your Masters studies. Do remember to attach your proposed research project outline (Executive Summary) to this application. Finally, please remember the copy of your identity document and the recent photograph.
