Road crash claims life of teenager

THE teenager killed in a one-car crash in Co Tyrone yesterday morning was Michael McKiver from Stewartstown. A woman travelling in the car was taken to hospital with serious injuries after the accident on the Ballynagowan Road in Stewartstown. Police last night appealed for any witnesses to the accident which was reported to police at 8am to contact them. Mr McKiver, 19, had been travelling in a black Vauxhall Astra car. Cookstown SDLP councillor Deirdre Mayo, who is related to Mr McKiver, said the community had been left shocked and numb. Local UUP MLA Sandra Overend said: My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the young man who was killed and with his girlfriend who is in a critical condition in hospital.

Kylie displays award for Armed Forces Day

BELFAST is expected to finally welcome the Royal Irish and Irish Guards home with a large scale event at the Kings Hall this autumn, the News Letter can reveal. However, Sinn Fein and the SDLP have already tried to block the event, voting it down at a recent committee meeting. But it is expected that this decision will be over turned at the next meeting of the full council on July 4, with Unionist and Alliance representatives having more numbers than the nationalist and republican bloc overall. There was anger earlier this year when the Ministry of Defence turned down an invitation from the council to stage a homecoming parade for the Royal Irish and Irish Guards in the city. Parades were held in Ballymena, Lisburn and Castlereagh in April but the MoD said due to a busy period of post-operative duties, it could not take part in a Belfast event. However, following a public outcry, army and council chiefs have been in talks to arrange a homecoming event. At a meeting of the strategic policy and resources committee last week, council officers reported that the MoD stated a preference for a relatively static ceremonial event. This was explained as being either an inspection, mini tattoo or an event described by its music, for example the Beating Retreat. Turn to page 8

Joint DUP-SF parade talks

THE DUP and Sinn Fein leaders will tomorrow take part in a historic joint meeting with the Parades Commission. Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness will for the first time hold joint talks with the commission to discuss contentious parades. Last year a joint attempt by the first and deputy first ministers to replace the commission with a new parading quango collapsed after being rejected by the Orange Order. Parades Commission chairman Peter Osborne said he hoped that the Orange Order would also talk to the commission. See page 6
