BELFAST is expected to finally welcome the Royal Irish and Irish Guards home with a large scale event at the Kings Hall this autumn, the News Letter can reveal. However, Sinn Fein and the SDLP have already tried to block the event, voting it down at a recent committee meeting. But it is expected that this decision will be over turned at the next meeting of the full council on July 4, with Unionist and Alliance representatives having more numbers than the nationalist and republican bloc overall. There was anger earlier this year when the Ministry of Defence turned down an invitation from the council to stage a homecoming parade for the Royal Irish and Irish Guards in the city. Parades were held in Ballymena, Lisburn and Castlereagh in April but the MoD said due to a busy period of post-operative duties, it could not take part in a Belfast event. However, following a public outcry, army and council chiefs have been in talks to arrange a homecoming event. At a meeting of the strategic policy and resources committee last week, council officers reported that the MoD stated a preference for a relatively static ceremonial event. This was explained as being either an inspection, mini tattoo or an event described by its music, for example the Beating Retreat. Turn to page 8
