Why a New Translation of the Missal?

He has made a significant contribution at international level through his chairmanship of the Vox Clara Committee charged with overseeing the liturgical translations into English as well as in the Congregations for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, and in the Pontifical Councils for the Family and for Justice and Peace. He also hosted the 2008 World Youth Day in Sydney. Born at Ballarat, Victoria, in 1941, George Pell was educated at St. Patricks College, Ballarat, and at Corpus Christi Seminary, Werribee. He studies theology at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome and took a Doctorate in Philosophy at the University of Oxford in 1971.

George Cardinal Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, is a leading member of the Australian hierarchy who has written and lectured extensively on subjects ranging from Divine Worship, to social justice, Catholic education, Christian marriage and family as well as on Australian political and social issues.

Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne in 1987, he succeeded as Archbishop of Melbourne in 1996. In 2001, he was transferred to the Archdiocese of Sydney. He was created Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church by B. Pope John Paul II in the Consistory of 21 October 2003.

Cardinal Pell writes widely in the religious and secular press, in academic journals and publications in Australia and overseas. Oxford University Press published his Issues of Faith and Morals in 1996.

Other publications include The Sisters of St. Joseph in Swan Hill 19221972, Catholicism in Australia, Rerum Novarum One Hundred Years Later, Catholicism and the Architecture of Freedom, and Be Not Afraid, a collection of homilies and reflections published in 2004.

Professor D. Vincent Twomey, S.V.D. Verbum Domini: Word and Rite in Ratzigners Sacramental Theology

After ordination, he spent a semester in Mnster, Westphalia, studying under Karl Rahner, before transferring to the University of Regensburg to do his doctoral studies under the supervision of the then Professor Joseph Ratzinger.

D. Vincent Twomey is a member of Ratzinger Schulerkreis. Born in Cork in 1941, Professor Twomey grew up in Cork, where he attended Christian Brothers College. He entered the Divine Word Missionaries in 1963. After philosophical studies at Donamon, Co. Roscommon, and theological studies on the Pontifical University, St Patricks College, Maynooth, he was ordained priest on 6th January 1970.

On completing the doctorate in 1979, he taught in the Regional Seminary of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands for three years as Professor of Dogmatic Theology. After this, he was appointed professor at the Divine Word Missionary Theology Faculty at Mdling, near Vienna, Austria. In 1983, he was appointed lecturer in moral theology on the Pontifical University, Maynooth, and was subsequently made Professor. He was also Visiting Professor on the Theology Faculty of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, in the Summer semester 1983. Since 1978, he has been a member of the Ratzinger circle of doctoral and post-doctoral students that meets once a year for a week-end seminar. In 1986, he founded The Patristic Symposium, at Maynooth, to promote the study of Patrology and has organized seven international

conferences on the subject. From 1997-2006, he was Editor of the Irish Theological Quarterly. From 2003-2011, he was Coordinator of the Religious Studies component of the Higher Diploma in Primary Education, Hibernia College, Editor-in-Chief of The Word, 20042008. Since September 2006, he is Professor Emeritus. In 2006, he became a member of the Board of Directors of FertilityCare Centers International as well as the Irish and European Boards. Since 2007 he has been Patron of the IONA Institute for Religion and Society, Dublin. In 2008, he was elected a member of the Board of Trustees, Joseph Ratzinger/ Benedict XVI Foundation (based in Munich/Salzburg). In 2009, he was Honorary President of the Classicist Association of Ireland. At present he is Vice-Provincial Superior of the Irish and British Province of the Divine Word Missionaries, and Rector of the SVD House, Maynooth.

The Most Reverend Arthur Sarretelli Bishop of Paterson, New Jersey The New Roman Misal: a moment in the Renewal of the Liturgy

Bishop Sarretelli attended Ann Street School in Newark and completed his grammar school education at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Newark. He attended Seton Hall Preparatory School and Seton Hall University in South Orange. He studied for two years at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington and then at the North American College in Rome. While in Rome, he did his theological studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University and Scripture studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute.

Bishop Arthur Joseph Serratelli was born in Newark, New Jersey on April 18, 1944, the son of Eva Fasolino and the late Pio Serratelli.

He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Seton Hall University in 1965, a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Gregorian University in 1969, a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Biblical Institute in 1976, and a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Gregorian University in 1977.

Ordained to the priesthood in St. Peters Basilica by Bishop Francis Reh on December 20, 1968, Bishop Serratelli served for one year as parochial vicar at St. Anthonys, Belleville. He taught Systematic Theology at Immaculate Conception Seminary for two years and then returned to Rome for higher studies. From 1977 until 2002 he taught Sacred Scripture and biblical languages at the seminary. He was Rector of St. Andrews College Seminary at Seton Hall University from 1997-2000.

He also taught at the Redemptorist Seminary in Esopus, New York; St. Josephs Seminary, Dunwoodie, New York; the Institute of Religious Studies, Archdiocese of New York; and the lay ministry program of the Educational Program Service of Trinity College, Washington.

His Holiness, Pope John Paul II named him a Prelate of Honor in 1998. His appointment as Titular Bishop of Enera and Auxiliary Bishop of Newark was announced on July 3, 2000. His Episcopal Ordination was celebrated on September 8, 2000. He was appointed Vicar for Ministries, Regional Bishop for Essex County, and Vicar General for the Apostolates shortly thereafter. In March 2002, he was appointed Vicar General & Moderator of the Curia for the Archdiocese of Newark. He was installed as Patersons seventh bishop on July 6, 2004 at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Paterson. As a member of the USCCB in Washington, Bishop Serratelli serves as Chairman of the Committee on Divine Worship and Chairman of the Ad hoc Sub-Committee for the Review of Scripture Translations. He is also the Commissioner of the International Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) and co-chair of the International Dialogue with the Baptist World Alliance. Bishop Serratelli also serves on the Task Force for the Review of the Lectionary, Ad hoc Committee for the Review of the Catechism, Ad hoc Committee for the Spanish Bible for the Church in America, and Committee on the American College of Louvain.

In addition, he is a member of the following: Board of Bishops of the New Jersey Catholic Conference; Board of Trustees at Assumption College, Mendham, NJ; Board of Regents and Board of Trustees at Seton Hall University, Board of Overseers at Immaculate Conception Seminary; and a Trustee of Catholic University of America.

As a member of the USCCB in Washington, he served as the former Chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, formerly on the Task Group on Liturgy with Children and the Committee for Women in the Church and Society.

Monsignor Daniel Gallagher What does language have to do with beauty? The philosophic foundations of liturgical translations.

His primary research interests lie in Thomistic metaphysics and aesthetics. He has published in the Postgraduate Journal of Aesthetics, PsyArt, the Journal for Christian Theological Research, Theandros, The Catholic Answer, the New Oxford Review, and other journals. He is the editor of the Values in Italian Philosophy series and a regular contributor to the Philosophy and Popular Culture series. Monsignor Gallagher is currently assigned to the Secretariat of State at the Vatican

Monsignor Daniel Gallagher was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Gaylord (USA) in 1999. He holds degrees in philosophy and theology from the Catholic University of America and the Pontifical Gregorian University respectively, and has taught at the Center for Catholic Studies and Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Michigan.

Monsignor James Moroney Ars Celebrandi and the New English Translation of the Missale Romanum

Monsignor Moroney has been a priest of the Diocese of Worcester (Massachusetts) for the past 30 years and most recently served as rector of the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul. He is a member of the faculty of Saint Johns Seminary in Boston and serves as Executive Secretary of the Vox Clara Committee. Monsignor Moroney is also adjunct faculty to the Liturgical Institute in Chicago and the International Consultation on Theological Education in Rome.

A past chairman of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions, Monsignor Moroney was Executive Director of the Secretariat for the Liturgy for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 1996-2007. Pope John Paul II appointed him as a consultor to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in 1999, a position to which he was recently reappointed by Pope Benedict XVI.

He is a consultant to the Rohn Design Group (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), a member of the Board of Directors of Sacred Spaces (Arlington, Virginia), and a member of the Advisory Board of Ephemerides Liturgic. A frequent lecturer on liturgical matters, Monsignor Moroney has addressed close to 20,000 priests and deacons in recent years at the invitation of more than 100 bishops in the United States and Canada. Both his popular guide to liturgical spirituality, The Mass Explained (Catholic Book Publishing), and his DVD, A New Translation for a New Roman Missal (Midwest Theological Forum) have been recently reissued.
