SESSION 1 OBJECTIVES ACTIVITY/ IES MATERIALS EVALUATION

y Identify syllables. y To syllabicate words properly.

y A story/ selection will be given to the participant. y There are underlined words in the story / selection. y A mirror will be given to the student. y List of the underlined words from the material will also be given to him. y He will be asked to read it aloud in front of the mirror. y He will then identify on which part of the word will cause him to open his mouth. y As a concluding part of the activity he will be given another set of words. y He will again identify how many syllables are there with the use of the mirror.

Any of these suggested activities can be used for evaluation purpose: y The teacher will pronounce / say words and the students will tell how many syllables are there in the word mentioned. y The students will repeat words that the teacher said. Identify how many syllables are there while tapping their hands as they count as they recite the words.

y Read multi syllabic words. y Answer how and why questions. y Syllabicate properly.

y The participant will be given a text entitled Romeo and Juliet (modified). y He will be given 5 minutes to read it. The story contains multi syllabic words. After reading the story he will answer how and why questions about it. The concept of multi syllabic words will be taught to him. He will then find the multi syllable words from the given text.

y He will be given another reading material. y Read it for 5 minutes. y There are underlined words in it. y He will be asked to write those words in the strips of paper. y All he needs to do after writing it is to cut the written words according to how it should be syllabicated.

y Read multisyllabic words. y Syllabicate. y Get the main idea.

The participant will be given a text entitled, Malaria: A Serious Health Problem There are underlined words in the selection. He will write it on strips of papers. Tell how many syllables are there by putting lines in the syllables of the word. Give the main idea of the selection. Answer set of questions about the text provided.

y Another copy of the same text will be given. y This time the text contains blanks which he has to fill out. y Right after filling out the blanks he needs to fill out the other space about the supporting details of the selection.

y Make Inferences y Syllabicate words properly. y Read multi syllabic word without hesitation.

y The participant will have a syllable speed drill for at least 5 minutes. y He will be given a sheet of paper containing common syllables. y He will read it as fast as he can, but it should be read accurately y The participant will be given a passage entitled, The First Americans y The passages are divided into 6 parts. After each part there is a selected word from it and the reader will choose the proper definition from the given options.

y The participant will be given sets of multisyllabic words. y He will count how many syllables are there in a particular word. y The counting of syllables will be done by scoping the syllables using his fingers or pencil. y Finally, he will read those words as he scopes it.

y The participant will be given a short paragraph about HELEN KELLER AND HER FAMILY. y He will be given time to read and note details from it. There are questions that will follow. y There are selected multi syllabic words from the story. y A word will be written by the teacher syllable by syllable in a separate paper. y The participant will be asked to manipulate/ jumble the cards and see if the meaning would be

y First, multi syllabic words written syllable by syllable will be given to him. y Second, he will manipulate it and take note on what happens. y Third, he will use those same cards to form the proper word. y Lastly, he will read the multi syllabic word.

y A text entitled, The First Filipino Hero will be given. y Key words and phrases will also be given to help when unfamiliar words are encountered. y He will read the material for 10 minutes. y The teacher will ask questions about what he read to see if there is comprehension. y Selected words from the story will be presented to him; he will choose a word from the option that is synonymous to what was given. y As he reads the text he is expected to syllabicate words properly.

y There will be a 10 minute discussion about the commonly used prefixes. y A text with some of the commonly used prefixes will be presented. y The participant will read it. y As the participant read the teacher will observe if the explanation done earlier about prefix help him understand that particular word. y He will write all the prefixes used in empty papers. y He will briefly tell the teacher on what is the meaning of that prefix.

y There will be a 10 minute discussion about the commonly used suffixes. y A text with some of the commonly used suffixes will be presented. y The participant will read it. y As the participant read the teacher will observe if the explanation done earlier about suffix help him understand that particular word. y He will write all the suffixes used in empty papers. y He will briefly tell the teacher on what is the meaning of that suffix.

y Distinguish root words. y Identify the prefix or suffix attached in a root word.

A text will be given to him containing words with prefixes and suffixes. He will be asked to look for the word parts (prefixes) at the beginning of the word. Look for the word parts (suffixes) at the end of the word. Sound out and blend together the word parts. Say the word parts fast.

y The participant will be given suffix, prefix card, and root word card. y He will pick one root word at a time. y Find a prefix or suffix that can be used to form a new word.

y Distinguish closed syllable words. y Read words with proper syllabication. y Find synonyms of a word.

y The teacher will present words written in cards. (closed syllable words) y The teacher will ask on what was noticed on the word endings. y The participant will read aloud those given words. y The concept of closed syllable will then be taught. y The definition will be written on the board by the teacher but with missing parts.

y Definition of words is given. y There is a word bank. y He will choose the best word that fits the definition given. *Closed syllable words will be used.

y Distinguish open syllable words. y Read words with proper syllabication.

y The teacher will explain that every syllable in a word has only one vowel sound. y On the board the teacher will write open word syllable like favor. y The words will be written syllable by syllable. y Point out that the 1stsyllable in each word ends in one vowel. y Open syllable will be explained. y The teacher will show some open syllable words. Ask how many vowels are seen. y Then ask on what letter & sound does the word end.

The teacher will write on the board, words with open syllables. The participant must recite it in a sing song voice so that the syllables can be easily heard / noticed.
