Lesson Planning Waynesburg University Writing the lesson plan: Translating thoughts into a plan of action _____________________________________________

Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson: (Provide Standard number and statement) Mathematics 2.1.8.B. Represent and use numbers in equivalent forms (e.g., integers, fractions, decimals, percents, exponents, scientific notation, square roots, absolute values). 2.1.8.E. Apply concepts of prime and composite numbers to calculate GCFs (Greatest Common Factor) and LCMs (Least Common Multiple) of numbers. 2.2.8.B. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide different kinds and forms of rational numbers including integers, decimal fractions, percents, and proper and improper fractions. ISTE: 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media b. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats. Lesson Objective(s) (Stated in observable and measurable terms) Students will be able to use the Ladder Method to find the Prime Factorization of any Number using Purple Math. Students will successfully use the Ladder Method 4 out of 5 times. They will identify the answers for the Prime Factorization of any Number 7 out of 10 times initially and 8 out of 10 times at the end of the lesson. Assessment Plan (What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?) Students will be able show understanding by finding the Prime Factorization of at least five different numbers until they have achieved 70% mastery. They will also show the necessary notes in their notebooks. Students will successfully use the Ladder Method 4 out of 5 times on their large group, small group, pair and individual Students will pass the unit exam with 70% or better. Materials: This lesson should be presented in the inclusion classroom with support in both the resource room and the After Math program. The students will need their books, folders, notebooks, pencils, and the link: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/factnumb.htm. Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs: The lesson will initially be presented in the inclusion math room. Then the students with special needs will be able to use the resource room or attend the After Math tutoring sessions. Enrichment Techniques: The lesson will initially be presented in the inclusion math room. Then the students who need enrichment will be able to use larger numbers or triple numbers immediately and /or attend the After Math tutoring sessions as a peer tutor.

Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able to participate in the lesson):

Students will have access to the link: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/factnumb.htm, the notes from the lecture, and their peers. Students who still have trouble with their times tables will have a multiplication chart. Students will be able to ask any of the adults in the room after they: Ask three before me. Students will have time in the resource room or After Math tutoring sessions if needed. Students will have an opportunity to work with their peer tutors.

Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set: Today we are going to use the Ladder Method to find Prime Factorization. We will use our knowledge of Prime Numbers in future lessons to find the Least Common Multiple (LCM); the Greatest Common Factor (GCF); and to simplify fractions. Detailed Teaching Sequence: (Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred)

Students will review Prime Factorization. Students will list the first primes under twenty: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, and 19. Students will watch the teacher (gen. ed. OR spec. ed.) draw the Ladder. Students will watch the teacher use the Ladder Method to find the prime factorization of one number. Teacher will show how the Ladder Method can later derive LCM; GCF; and the simplified form of a fraction.

Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities Students will use the Ladder Method with the teacher for several examples. Teacher will have the students work with a partner on guide-practice problems using the link: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/factnumb.htm. .

Closure:

Students will continue to work in pairs to find the solutions to more Ladder Method Exercises. Students will pass an exam based on the Ladder Method with a 70% or better.

Students will be able to use the Ladder Method automatically to determine the LCM; GCF; or simplified fraction. Students will use the Ladder Method as they learn to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
