CourseDescription: Itiswidelyrecognizedthatproblemsrelatedtodruguse,misuse,andabusepervadeoursocietyatalllevels. Whileuseofalcohol,tobacco,andotherdrugs(ATOD)canhaveaprofoundeffectonmanyimportantaspects ofanindividualslife,includingmental,emotional,social,physical,andspiritualhealthandsuccessinschool and/orwork,veryfewpeoplehavehadanydirecteducationaboutfactorsrelatedtodruguse.Educationatthe schoolandcommunityleveliscriticaltoreducingproblemsthatarisefromATODuse. This course is offered in conjunction with a onecredit fifteenhour training that is mandated by the Vermont Board of Education to fulfill Board Rule 4213.2, which states: that teachers and health and guidance personnelhaveasufficientlevelofprofessionaldevelopmenttoenablethemtocompetentlyteachorprovide otherservicesrequiredintheschoolsalcoholanddrugabusepreventioneducationprogram.Thistrainingis conductedaccordingtoacommonsyllabusatmultiplesiteseachyearacrossVermont.Participantsapplythe courseteachingsinapracticalpersonal,school,orcommunitybasedproject. Instructionalmethodsincludelecture,smallandlargegroupdiscussion,audiovisualandothermedia,student andcommunitypresentations,simulationandassessment. ProblemIdentification:Identifyanissueorspecificbehaviortoaddress(e.g.,tobaccouse, communicationskillswith partner,dealingwithstress,etc.). Maximum20points 2.
