aspects of their winemaking approach: As pioneers of sparkling wine-based clonal research, weve studied more than 40 different clones. Today, this longtime and dynamic relationship of discovery with the land is revealed in balanced wines of earth and opulence. This same attention to detail also came in to play 20 years ago. In 1991, inspired by the quality and character of our estate fruit, we began crafting still wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. In subsequent years, the winegrowing team meticulously matched dozens of clones to the diverse growing conditions in our estate vineyards with their sights on the highest quality grapes with more intense flavors and characteristics. This approach paid off handsomely as the still wines get better year after year and, along

Rolando Herrera
Following Dreams to Winemaking Success
by Josh Stein
The Napa Valley has been a place people have come to for more than a century, pursuing dreams of success in the wine business, and Rolando Herrera, who has been involved in the making of Napas finest of wines for three decades, is no different. Rolando grew up in Michoacan, Mexico, learning the fundamentals of sound agricultural practice working alongside his grandparents. As he remarks, I can still recall hiking with them into the mountains. Little did I know this simple lesson in terroir would have a profound impact on my life. He first came to Napa in 1975 when his parents relocated for work. Upon retirement, they, along with the family, returned to Michoacan, but Rolando himself returned to Napa at fifteen, seeking success in the Valley just like the original 19th-cenutry pioneers. In 1985, aged seventeen, he was hired to help with the construction of a stone wall at Stags Leap Wine Cellars, where his hard work and attention to detail came to the notice of owner Warren Winiarski, who offered Rolando his first position inside of a winery as
a cellar rat and with whom he would spend the next decade, his last seven years as Cellar Master. Afterwards, he took on a series of more demanding roles with Chateau Potelle and Vine Cliffe Winery, both on the Silverado Trail, before joining Paul Hobbs as Director of Wine in 2001 and founding his own then200-case, now-5,500-case brand, Mi Sueo. Subsequently, he was drawn back to the Stags Leap District and the Baldacci vineyards. As he notes, These are wines I know and love the best. In a way, I feel as if Ive come full circle because I started my career here. Now, I return with a wealth of knowledge and experience I can put to good use for the Baldacci family. And that he has done. Upon joining the Baldacci team in 2003, Rolando applied his philosophy of small-batch fermentations, dividing each vineyard into many blocks and then fermenting them separately, allowing for blending to become key in producing the estates best wines. What has been the result? Lots of amazing reviews and 90+ scores, but thats not what truly matters its whats in the glass that does. Among the most impressive of results have been the range of Cabernets Rolando has produced for the Baldaccis:
the Brendas Vineyard block-designated Cabernet; the all-Stags Leap District estate Black Label Cabernet; the IV Sons Cabernet and IV Sons Fraternity, with its Stags Leap Cab and Carneros Merlot and Syrah; the Ruppert Cabernet from Coombsville; and the Diamond Mountain Cab with its mountainside fruit. Its not just big reds where hes seen success for Baldacci Family Vineyards, though. Indeed, the Elizabeth Carneros and Mathilde Russian River Pinot Noirs show the same attention to winemaking detail, as is also seen in the individual small bottlings of Chardonnay and Gewrztraminer the winery only makes available directly. When you look at the list of wines above, what you see is Rolandos simple-but-detailoriented philosophy in practice. His keys to age-worthy Napa wines are to grow the best grapes possible and then listen to the vineyard while making those grapes into wine. Based on the reactions to his wines, its clear that the Baldaccis made the right choice in seeking out Rolando Herrera to steer their winemaking into their next cycle of growth: come taste for yourself and see the success produced by dreams first pursued more than thirty years ago. Salud!

Napa Valley Festival del Sole celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Pride Mountain Vineyards with an exclusive gala dinner on Tuesday, July 19 at 6 p.m. Approximately 65 guests will toast two decades of exceptional winemaking with Pride Mountain Vineyards top vintages, a five-course dinner prepared by renowned chef Gary Danko and a private concert by the RNO Camerata. Perched atop Spring Mountain, some 2000 feet above the town of St. Helena, Pride Mountain Vineyards was founded in 1990 by Jim and Carolyn Pride. There is no question that the fruit quality at Pride Mountain is special, writes wine critic Robert Parker. Prides wines have been served at the White House more than 25 times, featured among the 22 California wineries chosen for Parkers book, The Worlds Greatest Wine Estates, and placed on the Wine Spectators annual Top 100 list six times in the last ten years. Pride's wines belong in every serious collector's cellar. The evening kicks off with a reception in the lawn area adjacent to the ruins of the old Summit Winery. Grapes were initially planted on the property in 1869 and the ruins of the old winery building, dating back to 1890, are still present. A performance by the dynamic RNO Camerata follows in this dramatic setting, with the septet performing works by Telemann, Bach, Piazzola, Morricone and Gardel. Guests will then be whisked away through the winerys caves to dine on the cave terrace, with sweeping views of the vineyards. Pride Mountain Vineyards award-winning, mountain-grown wines include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Viognier, and a limited production dessert wine, Mistelle de Viognier. Grown on 83 planted acres on this 240acre historic estate, the Pride wines are uniquely distinguished because the Napa/Sonoma county line divides the ranch in two. A visit to Pride Mountain Vineyards takes wine enthusiasts to new heights and allows them to enjoy the glories of the Napa and Sonoma wine regions simultaneously. Napa Valley Festival del Sole takes place every summer in Californias beautiful Napa Valley. The festival features concerts by some of the worlds most celebrated musical artists, five-star cuisine, art exhibits and wines from Napas top vintners, blended in a unique celebration of the art of life. This years festival runs July 15-24. Special events include the second Dance Gala starring principal dancers from the Bolshoi and American Ballet Theatre; an expanded vocal series with sopranos Nino Machaidze, Aleksandra Kurzak and Marnie Breckenridge, baritone Guido Loconsolo and tenor Francesco Demuro; and the premiere of a multidisciplinary program dedicated to the world of Shakespeare. For more information about the festival or to purchase tickets or packages, visit www.festivaldelsole.org.

SUISUN VALLEY
Under the Rainbow Dreams Come True in Fairfield
by Barbara L. Steinberg
Late winter rains have passed and spring skies are clearing. Though not the Land of Oz, there are some magical places under the rainbow just off I-80 in Northern California. How about the Land of Fairfield? Sometimes you have to be willing to take a chance look beyond your own backyard and take the road less traveled. You wont have to travel far. Fairfield is the perfect base camp to explore the profusion of regional activities throughout Solano County and neighboring counties, as well. A short distance from Californias world-famous Napa Valley wine region youll discover Fairfields rustic wine country in Suisun Valley. An idyllic destination, the Suisun Valley (pronounced sue-soon) is conveniently located less than 50 miles from Sacramento or San Francisco. A handful of tasting rooms are open to the public. What they lack in numbers, they make-up in quality, hospitality and welcoming experience. You wont find anyone but the winemakers or their families and friends behind the pour. The Suisun Valley Cooperative offers wines from five distinctively different family-owned wineries. The Blue Victorian Winery is a private estate owned by the Vezr family where you can partake of the gentle life: barrel tasting, a little bocce ball, and quiet views. Down the lane, Wooden Valley Vineyards & Winerys history dates back more than 75 years. Daily tastings and shaded picnic tables provide rest and relaxation. Fill your picnic basket at local farm stands or Barista Caf & Deli at Mankas Corner. Separated from Napa Valley by the Vaca Mountains, its a charming back road ramble through the valleys of Suisun and Wooden into Napa. Its not quite the long and winding roadwinding, yes, but less than 20 miles away. This amazing journey includes spectacular scenery in a little-explored corner of Solano County. Avoid all the hustle and bustle on this country lane as you glide peacefully from Fairfield into downtown Napa. Check your GPS coordinates or, if necessary, try an old-fashioned road map to find the scenic route from Fairfield to Napa and back again. Many familiar brand hotels are located just off I-80, making Fairfield a convenient overnight and weekend getaway. Escapes to nearby wine valleys Suisun and Napa are gentle on the pocketbook if you include overnight stays in Fairfield. Spend the day and a night your dreams can come true.

RAS Galleries
Even owner Ronda Schaer could not have envisioned that her affection for the little village of Yountville would someday blossom into a full-blown love affair. This is a town that you can get your arms around. Twenty years ago she did just that. With the opening of her now famous art gallery, RAS Galleries, Ronda has embraced her community and graced it with one of its most successful and admired businesses. It was her passion for art, and glass in particular, that moved Ms. Schaer to open a gallery. I have always been drawn to glass. But it was the work of American glass artists that really captured her heart. Representing more than two hundred American artists, the gallery has become one of the premiere venues in which to experience the drama, imagery and vision of this artistic medium. The gallery also features the work of some extremely gifted fine artists, with original oil paintings from artists throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, as well as the Eastern Seaboard and point in between. The whimsical chefs of ceramic artist, Cynthia Hipkiss are also a favorite of collectors. Says Ronda, I created RAsgalleries with a YOUNT MILL RD singular focus on Original American Art, primarily Art Glass, my personal passion.
S WA HIN
And Im proud that after twenty years in the same Yountville, Napa Valley location, the passion remains. RASgalleries is located at 6540 Washington Street, next to Bouchon in Yountville and is open daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesday by appointment. Phone (707) 9449211.

St. Francis Winerys 2nd Annual Stars Under the Stars Film Festival Pairs Silver Screen Icons with Stellar Wines al Fresco
Sonoma County pioneer, St. Francis Winery & Vineyards, expands its 2nd annual Stars Under the Stars outdoor film festival this year to six weeks and six classic films. Curated by celebrity sommelier and film aficionado Christopher Sawyer, the festival takes place every Thursday at the winery from July 14 to August 18. Christopher Sawyer and St. Francis Winery CEO and President Christopher Silva will host a short discussion of the evenings film and suggested wine pairing before each screening. Great movies and elegant wines, asserts Silva, transport us to another place and time all the more so under the sky and the stars on a summer night in Sonoma. Big Night opens this years festival on Thursday, July 14. Winner of the 1997 Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay, Big Night tells the story of two Italian immigrants who open a restaurant on the New Jersey Shore in search of the American dream. Memorable for such lines as To eat good food is to be close to God, the movie revolves around preparations for a magnificent feast intended to save their failing restaurant. Academy Award winner Moonstruck, starring Cher and Nicholas Cage, screens Thursday, July 21. This intoxicating 1987 romantic comedy won three Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best

Actress (Cher) and Best Supporting Actress (Olympia Dukakis). On Thursday, July 28, St. Francis pays tribute to the late director John Hughes by screening the iconic coming of age film Ferris Buellers Day Off, starring Mathew Broderick. This 1986 smash hit will be followed on Thursday, August 4, by American Grafitti, another classic coming of age film, this one set in 1962 and filmed in Sonoma County. Ranked by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 greatest movies ever made, American Grafitti was written and directed by George Lucas and stars Richard Dreyfuss and Ron Howard. Nominated for three Academy Awards, the 1989 baseball fantasy film Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta and Burt Lancaster, screens on Thursday, August 11. The festival closes on Thursday, August 18, with Sideways, arguably the most influential wine movie of all time. That evening St. Francis will pay tribute to Merlot, the much maligned varietal in this Academy Award winning film. Seating begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by the screening at 8 p.m. There is no charge for attending. Wine by the glass, charcuterie, popcorn, brownies and cookies will be available for purchase. For over 35 years, St. Francis Winery in Sonoma has hand-crafted fruit forward, luscious and full-bodied wines from superior mountain and valley vineyards in Sonoma Countys best appellations. While most renowned for its red varietals, including its Zinfandel (all old vines 60 to 110 years old), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Francis also produces a noteworthy Chardonnay. St. Francis Sonoma County wines are bursting with flavor and are recognized globally for outstanding quality and great value. An internationally-renowned sommelier, wine journalist, consultant, critic and public speaker, Christopher Sawyer travels the world following trends in wine and participating as a judge in international wine competitions. Sawyer earned the 2009 Best Sommelier in Sonoma County by The Wine Tasting Panel Magazine and is the recipient of many prestigious awards and industry honors. As the worlds first and only Film Festival Sommelier, Sawyer conceived and curated the wine experience throughout the Sonoma Valley Film Festival, including creatively pairing wine and food with films throughout the festival and at celebrity tributes. Christopher is currently sommelierin-residence at the Carneros Bistro & Wine Bar at The Lodge at Sonoma Renaissance Resort and Spa, where his wine list has received numerous awards.

Lake County Winery Association Hosts Upcoming Lake County Wine Adventure Weekend, July 30-31
Passport-style Event Offers Tours, Hors Doeuvres, Entertainment, Tastings From More Than 25 Wineries
The seventh-annual Lake County Wine Adventure, a two-day passport event, will be held July 30-31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This years Lake County Wine Adventure is once again being hosted by the Lake County Winery Association. Adventurous wine enthusiasts will have an opportunity to discover the new wine country of Californias Lake County and sample distinct high elevation award-winning wines. Throughout the weekend, wine adventurers will taste wines from five of Lake Countys six distinct viticulture areas (AVAs) as they visit participating wineries. Adventure tickets can be purchased in advance for $35 each. Tickets also are available at every participating winery on the day of the event for $40 each. Each ticket is good for two days of activities and entitles the holder to wine tastings and hors doeuvres at each winery, a logo wine glass, art exhibits and entertainment. Event-goers will be entered into a raffle drawing when they leave their completed wine adventure tickets with the last winery they visit. A special grand prize will be awarded to the winner. Event organizers promote responsible hospitality and encourage all participants to designate a driver. Designated drivers are invited to enjoy non-alcoholic drinks, food and entertainment free of charge at each site compliments of the Lake County Winery Association. Designated drivers also can turn in their special buttons to be eligible for some fun Lake County prizes. For more information, call (800) 595-WINE (9463), (707) 3552762 or visit www.lakecountywineries.org For visitor information, contact the Lake County Visitor Information Center at 1-800-525-3743 or www.lakecounty.com.
