Cossack service began at the end of a man's 20th year, at which time he spent 1 year (2 years for Ural Cossacks) training near his home followed by 4 years in active-duty 1st Line Category units. The next 4 years were spent in inactive 2nd Category units on leave at home. A further 4 years were in 3rd Category units in which the men's only duty was to keep their equipment ready. Finally, the last 5 years of a cossack's service were in the reserve class [zapasnyi razryad]. In peacetime only the 1st Line Category cossack regiments were maintained. To each of these, generally speaking, there corresponded a regiment of the 2nd and another of the 3rd Line Category.
