If ever there was a female heir to
iconic soul man Solomon Burkes legacy,
it would be Brooklyn-bred high priestess
of the genre, Alexis P. Suter. Suter and
band evoke a roots-ripped gospel sound
by way of a jam-band sensibility thats
pure fuel for your spirit. Taking a cue
from one of her varied inuences, The
Band (whose Levon Helm was a staunch
early supporter), Two Sides breaks the
shackles of limited-labeling scope (read:
The blues), and condently looks inward
Releasing 19 albums is no small feat
for any artist, much less a veteran metal
act that has been performing since the
late 1970s, but Saxon has done just that
with its latest, Call To Arms. While
somewhat less well-known than some of
its fellow New Wave of British Heavy
Metal counterparts, the band was an
integral part of the movement, and that
Brit-ness is apparent in everything that
its done thus far, beginning with the
bands name and, in this case, to the
With bands like All Time Low,
you more or less know what to
expect: Fun and catchy pop-
rock songs. The bands major-
label debut, Dirty Work, is
no different, and it could be the
reason it debuted at No. 6 on the
Billboard 200.
Lead track Do You Want Me
(Dead)? contains the softest
part of the album the rst 25
seconds of the song before
frontman Alex Gaskarth starts
belting out the lyrics, setting the
mood of the album with an I
dont care attitude.
The next song, I Feel Like
Dancin could be the party
anthem of the summer its

with a tip of the hat to The Almighty.
With a baritone boom, Suter traces
the wanderlust of personal discovery
through the willowy soul dance of
Free, kicks her two-timing man to the
curb in the tumbling rocker All Over
Again and melts the paint off the walls
with an En Vogue-meets-Joss Stone-
at-the-pulpit gospel rave in Part Time
Feeling. Add in an eclectic instrumental
mix via guitarist Jimmy Bennett and
Benny Harrison on keys, sounding like
the funkiest of Stax Records refugees,
and its a recipe that beats like-minded
contemporaries like Sharon Jones and
The Dap Kings at their own game.
Elsewhere, two covers enhance
the spiritual cleansing. Knockin On
Heavens Door teems with atonement,
building to a towering crescendo
climaxing with Suters voice roaring to
the heavens. John The Revelator brings
the Delta into the barrooms of Memphis
with its roguish sense of reverence and
walloping backing vocals.
Sounding like Aretha Franklin
testifying through a John Lee Hooker
mouthpiece, Suter sets the standard for
modern female soul shouters.

World War I-era artwork album cover.
As British as they may be on the
outside, however, Saxon has also long
been known for the bands love of
American culture. While in the past
that love was limited to the high-octane
subject matter of some of their songs,
on Call To Arms Saxon begins to
sound a like an American metal band as
well. The rst two tracks (Hammer of
the Gods and the nostalgic Back in
79) are close as one could consider to
being classic Saxon tracks, along with
Chasing the Bullet and Afterburner.
Throughout the remainder of the album,
though, the sound mimics that of a
number of different hard rock/metal
artists, and at times the songwriting
seems disjointed and changes style so
often one occasionally wonders if they
are listening to the same album (or,
perhaps even the same band).
When its all said and done, Saxons
new music pales greatly in comparison
to its glory years, which becomes even
more evident with the inclusion of the
bonus disc with a remastered version of
1980s Live in Donnington, which may
really be the album highlight. Grizzled
metalheads will likely pick this up, but
younger audiences will probably look
past it.

already made Top 40 playlists
and can keep a listeners
attention easily.
The album does not have any
ballads and keeps going with fast
and free-spirited tunes. All Time
Low does a good job of making
sure the songs dont sound the
same something that was a
downfall on previous albums. It
covers all the usual topics that
will make it popular for teens
and kids in their early twenties:
Relationships, ings, parties and
easy living.
The standout tracks on
Dirty Work are That Girl,
and Heroes, which reect
the bands old punk style of
songwriting with the new pop
feel its added. You get a bit of
profanity that you can expect
with most rock songs, but at the
same time, you get a fun story
line and guitar riffs that can make
your heart race.
Drummer Rian Dawson shines
the most on the album; his
work gives the recent release a
dancier and hip-hop feel while
still being able to capture the
fast-paced drum lls ATL fans
might be used to.
The sound on Dirty Work
is denitely different and is
very comparable to Fall Out
Boys later albums. And with
appearances from members of
Simple Plan, Weezer and Panic!
At the Disco, it makes for a great
listen all the way through and
will lighten your mood with ease.

he burst onto the music
scene with her unshakable
single, Love Song, in
2007, and ever since, Sara Bare-
illes music career has been in an
upward spiral. Her most recent
labor of love, Kaleidoscope
Heart was released in Septem-
ber and debuted at No. 1 on the
Billboard Top 200 chart, and
Bareilles has uniquely positioned
herself as an artist with both
authenticity and mass appeal.
The 31-year-old songstress is
touring with countrys power-
house duo Sugarland this sum-
mer, and Bareilles, her drummer,
Josh Day, and guitar player, Ja-
vier Dunn, stopped by 98.5
KRZs Spotlight Lounge Friday,
June 17 to perform semi-acoustic
renditions of Uncharted, King
of Anything and Love Song.
Before that, though, Bareilles sat
down with the Weekender to
answer a few unconventional
questions while she autographed
a stack of photos.
WEEKENDER: Unchart-
ed was kind of the song that
got you out of your writers
block, but what is another
thing you needed to complete
Kaleidoscope Heart?
BAREILLES: Neal Avron,
my producer. He was really,
really important to me and defi-
nitely was a catalyst for making
things move forward, because I
felt safe. So, yeah, I choose Neal
(laughs).
WEEKENDER: How did
your recent volunteering/per-
forming in Japan change or
affect you?
BAREILLES: It
was amazing. We got
to see sort of a whole
spectrum of experi-
ences there. Every-
thing from having a
day off in Osaka and
running around, you
know, sampling local
food and beer
wink, wink and
heading into Tokyo
and just seeing the
city itself. And then
heading up into northern Japan
and doing some volunteer work.
It really felt like a crash course in
Japanese culture and lifestyle.
And I definitely fell head-over-
heels in love with it; I got a tattoo
day one while I was there. I just
felt really connected. The coun-
try itself is amazing, and the
people are just spectacular.
WEEKENDER: Eddie Ved-
der released an entire ukulele
album, and you play the in-
strument. Would you ever
make an album with one?
BAREILLES: I would have to
get a lot better at the ukulele.
Hes a great player. I love the
sound of the ukulele. I havent
heard (his) record yet, but I
would totally consider that! But I
would want to get better at it
first. Ive got some practicing to
do.
WEEKENDER: What are
you listening to now?
BAREILLES: Theres a band
called Elizabeth and the Catapult,
and we just toured with them,
and I cant stop listening to her
record, Other Side of Zero.
Both of her records are amazing,
but that most recent one has been
my favorite record in a long time.
WEEKENDER: We know
you did An Ode to Jersey
Shore at a concert, so what do
you think about the shows cast
going to Italy?
BAREILLES: I think its
going to be a spectacle. I think
thats exactly what theyre aiming
for. And I think it will be more of
the same, but with more pasta. W

M
y second apartment in
Los Angeles was one of
the most bizarre places
Ive ever been. Among the ten-
ants were transvestites that ran
an underground hair salon in the
morning hours and a former
Disneyland Prince Charming
battling addiction. Down the
hall, with a little more sanity,
were Jen and Suzy. When the
three of us made a YouTube
video of ourselves making prank
phone calls and urinated on a
neighbors bed the first night we
hung out, I knew it was the
beginning of a beautiful friend-
ship.
One day, we were riding in the
elevator to do laundry when we
noticed a sign that caught our
attention. Dear Tenants! the
note began. Sierra House Man-
agement has been made aware
of a Peeping Tom. If you see
somebody in your window
please call the authorities as
soon as possible.
We couldnt get over the
strange notice in the elevator. As
we were doing our laundry, we
decided to mess with the tenants
of Sierra House by taking down
the notice of a Peeping Tom and
replacing it with something even
more outrageous.
After carefully devising the
most preposterous scenario we
could think of, our note was
ready to be posted in the eleva-
tor:
Dear Tenants,
Sierra House Management
would like to inform you that
there has been a sex offender
masturbating in the laundry
room during the night. It is said
that the washing machines and
driers have been tainted with
semen.
Launder at your own risk.
Thank You,
Sierra House Management
Within 24 hours, the entire
apartment building was talking
about the note. Since the notice
resembled announcements regu-
larly posted by Sierra House
management, nobody thought to
doubt whether or not the laundry
room was actually tainted with
semen.
Instead of quitting while we
were ahead, we took a mammoth
leap in excessive behavior by
replacing our announcement
with one that was less of a
warning and more of an alleged
confession from the owner,
stating in first person that he
was about to admit to his wife
that he has been cheating on her
with teenage boys that he forced
to wear nipple-tassels.
This is ridiculous, someone
shouted in the elevator as they
ripped up the notice. This can-
not be real.
What about the laundry room
one? some girl asked.
I shrugged my shoulders as
the elevator doors opened.
I guess youll just have to
launder at your own risk, I said.
