DISSERTATION
Covetous to parley with so sweet a frontis-peece: Illustration in Early Modern English Play-Texts Supervisor: Dr. Katherine Acheson Committee: Dr. Jennifer Roberts-Smith and Dr. Sarah Tolmie External Reader: Dr. Holger Schott Syme My dissertation analyzed patterns of visual rhetoric in the illustrated title pages of seventeenthcentury English printed drama. These images raise significant questions about publication practices, politics, and the relationship between the contemporary theatrical audience and the reading public. Furthermore, they represent definite and hitherto unacknowledged emphasis on performance aspects of published drama, thereby communicating distinctive value to their viewers.
