YELLOW FEVER'S FINGER ON LOCAL FOOTBALL'S PULSE

Edition Eleven

BANNED, BUT WE DONT CARE.

EDITORIAL CONTROvERsy AND KUDOs

In the past couple of editions Park Life has stirred up a bit of controversy. Weve got ourselves banned from the clubrooms of one mediocre second division team who didnt like their dirty knickers being put in print last week, and weve challenged Capital Footballs disciplinary processes. Capital Football have responded thoughtfully below, explaining their process, and that there is a difference between a punch and a headbutt. Quite right too. Cheers to them for responding, and for acknowledging that theyre looking to improve their processes, which have come under unprecedented pressure this season. Good form. Also thanks to all the clubs who turned out in support of Dave Capstick last Saturday at the fundraiser at Four Kings, it was great to see so many of the regions clubs turn out. A bit of a shame there werent a few more from the Valley (although thank you to Barry Pickering for making a donation on behalf of Petone FC), but we know you guys dont get out much. Good luck to all the clubs in the Big Cup this weekend, especially the lower league lads. Upsets ahoy!

In respect of the two examples firstly the male player, not all parties agreed it was a pretend head butt. Law 12 also describes an offence as strikes or attempts to strike an opponent. The penalties decided by the Disciplinary committee were based on Capital Footballs Disciplinary Guidelines. In summary, for Punching the range was 2 match minimum, 8 week maximum, the female player received a mid-range penalty. For headbutting 2 match minimum, 1 year maximum. Male player suspension at the very low end. If anything these ranges do need to be looked in terms of consistency. However, on the basis there wasnt one Disciplinary committee meeting last season, then the ranges havent been largely tested. In addition each offence is judged on a case by case basis, in terms of intent, force used, severity of the offence and injury to the opposing player. It is worthwhile pointing out that both bans would not have even taken place if the players hadnt taken an action that is not acceptable on a football field. Capital Football could then work on what the clubs pay their affiliation fees for and not spend so much time on clubs and their players bad behaviour.

BIG CUP THIRD ROUND 18/19 JUNE

Big Cup is upon us once again, although with most of Wellington having already fallen by the wayside, youd hardly know it. The highlight of the round in Wellington should be the Oranje battle between Wellington United and Upper Hutt at Newtown Park. United coming off a big 4-1 win over the baby Bubbles, Upper Hutt off a 3-0 against Island Bay. United have the talent to edget this one, but itll be close and entertaining. You might find a copy of Parky hard to come by at this game. Petone host Palmy North Marist at Memorial and, having recovered some form, should be too strong for the Central Leagues bottom feeders (Marist), especially after the great comeback against the Bubbles at the weekend. After a 1-1 draw with Rapa on Saturday though, Marist may not be the pushovers everyone expects.

LETTER A WORD fROM CApITAl fOOTBAll

Following [last weeks] article [in Park Life] it maybe worthwhile explaining how [the Disciplinary Process] works. Following the receipt of a Misconduct or Incident Report, Capital Football decides whether the offence should receive more than the mandatory suspension. If there is more than a 3 match suspension, the club can request a hearing of the Disciplinary Committee, or they could just accept the original decision. The [Disciplinary] committee is a 3 person panel who were not involved in the original decision and has at least two independent members. After hearing the submissions the committee can reduce, retain or increase the penalties.

Stop Out play Napier City Rovers at Hutt Park on Sunday. Rovers are in great form (5-0 over Miramar in the last round of Cup, 3-0 over Wests on the weekend), but playing away might level the game a bit. four time Cup winners Rovers should go through. Rapa travel to Palmy North to take on Red Sox Manawatu. Rapas CL form have been sketchy over the last few weeks, with the home draw against Palmy Marist on the weekend the latest poor result. Red Sox are at the top of the Western Premiership, with 9 wins and 2 draws. They beat Team Taranaki 1-0 away in the latest round. Rapa should be too strong, but with them, who knows. potential upset.

Team Moral [sic] Every team likes to win and we all play for the fun of it and the better the team spirit is then the more enjoyable the experience is for everyone involved regardless of the results. Easy ways to promote this is with simple things like post-match drinks, where your players can unwind, revel in their glory or cringe from their mistakes. Team fining sessions are popular and help gather a team kitty for any team functions such as curry nights. Facebook groups are easy to start and are an easy way to connect the team outside of football. A little effort up front makes the season a lot less hassle.

FOOTBALL CENTRAL PREMIER

The biggest winners of the week were Wellington United. Their 4-1 win over Olympic moving them to the top of the table equal on points with Upper Hutt, but with better goal difference. Upper Hutts 3-0 win over Island Bay (Island Bay keeper Henry van Dyk was injured and replaced by an outfield player) puts them into second, and Island Bay fall down to third a point behind, although with a game in hand. These three look like deciding the promotion winner at this stage of the season. Stop Out beat Miramar Rangers reserves 4-1 (Steven Gully getting a brace), but both teams stay mid-table. Stop Out still within striking distance of the top three, but need to be more consistent if they are to threaten. Wharf beat Marist 3-0, with evergreen Mike Greene scoring. The win (Wharfs sixth consecutive undefeated game after a horror start) separates them from the bottom three. Wainui and Wests battled out a 1-1 draw. Wainui are rooted to the bottom of the table with no wins, Wests second-bottom, but team stacking should push them to safety in the coming weeks. Thats bad news for Marist who are only 2 points in front of them in 8th in a clearly defined bottom three. Marist and Wainui in real trouble.

BIG LEAGUE MIRAMAR sTREAKs AHEAD IN CENTRAl lEAGUE

Miramar (1st, 23 points) extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games after sneaking past Maycenvale 2-1 at Davey F. Sutherland (pictured) missed a peno, but The Mar are now 5 points clear in top spot. Olympic (2nd, 18 points) and Wairarapa (3rd, 17 points) remain in second and third respectively despite both losing ground to the Mar after disappointing results. Olympic, who have welcomed back Georgie Barbarouses after his Tour of Cash around Central League clubs, blew a 3-1 lead over Petone to lose 4-3, while the Rapa were held to a 1-1 draw with relegation-bound PN Marist (6 points). Tawa (8th, 12 points) played out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Lower Hutt (5th, 16 points) at Tawas home away from home of Endeavour Park. Tawa are 5 points clear of Palmy Marist, and another win in the last 7 games should make them safe from relegation. The match was notable for a couple of youngsters scoring, Jared Putt (Tawa) and Hamish Watson (Lower Hutt) both starting to establish themselves as regular scorers in the league. Napier City Rovers (4th, 16 points) were the biggest movers over the weekend after dispatching Wests (6th, 16 points) 3-0 in the Bay. Napier leapfrog both Wests and Lower Hutt into fourth place on goal difference. NCR are on a good run of form having won 4 of their last 5 central leagues games, and rolling Miramar 5-0 in the Chatham Cup.
