I am a 20 year old Mezzo Soprano in my 2nd year of
Undergraduate Studies at Mannes College the New School for Music. I was selected as 1 of 12 singers worldwide, ages 19-30 to take part in the Internationale Meistersinger Akademie for 6 weeks in Neumarkt, Germany this summer. This program is a collaboration of the Nurnberg University and The Juilliard School, and the first musical summer program I am attending. This is an immensely special opportunity for me to learn about opera, oratorio, Lied, and melodie. Roundtable discussions featuring invited guest artists, agents, opera directors, and festival organizers are provided as well as daily language studies in German, French and Italian. Some of the faculty include Artistic Director Edith Wiens, Dr. Brian Zeger (Executive Director of the Lindemann Program at the Metropolitan Opera), and Professor Siegfried Jerusalem. Making contacts with the distinguished faculty, their guests, and 6 weeks intensive training in coaching and auditions is ideal for a young singer. We will also be attending the Bayreuth Rehearsals and putting on concerts to be recorded by the Bavarian Radio. I have never been to Europe but I am extremely excited and honored to take part in the inaugural summer of the IMA.
I am planning on flying out of La Guardia into Nuremberg and then taking a
train into Neumarkt. This program is full scholarship, however not all meals are provided. I would use the money to pay for intensive language classes in German offered by the Nuremberg University, which is something I am very interested in taking. I am taking German in school this year and I feel I am grasping the language, so with 6 weeks in Germany, plus regular and intensive language courses I feel I could become conversational in the language. I am in love with German Lieder and plan to make it a huge part of my repertoire. I don’t come from a lot of money; between government and merit scholarship my tuition is very manageable. I wouldn’t have been able to attend a summer program if it wasn’t full scholarship, but I happened to discover a truly remarkable opportunity. Any grant money from the Anna Sosenko Assist Trust would be extremely appreciated.
BUDGET:
