Childrens in the coal factory:

• Their face and clothe was dirty,

• This shows how unsanitary the coal factory was.

• This picture shows abuse of labor over childrens

• The hand is supposed to symbolize Factories, while the small human figure are childrens.

• Based on this cartoon i would say the author is a progressivist. Since this was the type of pictures they
drew to show people the nagativity of child labor.
 The healing creme of Child labor

Child Labor had a major impact on the economy of the

nation at the time of the industrial revolution. There were some
negative and positive affect of child labor. It helped support
families, but it also took the childhood of children making then
illitrates. There were some reform movement going on at the
time of the Progressive era dealing with child labor. Progressives
were people trying to stop child labor or at least improve the
conditions.

In the year after the civil war known as the “Industrial Revolution,”
many work opportunities were emerging. Factories like petroleum refiniery,
steel manufactury, and coal mine industries were growing. Also the
railroad industry grew as a factor for the nations economy. The rise of
industry increased migration rate to cities for job opportunities. Many
families migrated to cities, who then realized life was not bright as they
thought it would be. Since there was a high rate of immigrants, factories
started hiring workers for low wage. Most workers worked for low wage
struggling to survive. In most situation, all family members needed to work.
Factories hired childrens for a very low wage, which then led to a high rise
in child labor. Childrens worked in conditions that were dengerous and
toxic for 10 to 14 hour a day. An estimate of 1.5 million children under the
age of fifteen were employed in the American industry by 1900. Beyond all
this, children had limited access to education. Even though children
worked for low wage they were able to help supposrt their family eith the
money they made. In some factories children were paid up to $4.00 a
week. Even though it was not enough, it would cover the cost of two
person.

Over the time, the issue of child labor was restricted by the
creation of new law, minimum working wage, and prohibition of children
working in dengerous condition.“Child labor began to decline as the labor
 and reform movements grew.” Two most known contrubitors to the reform
movement were Jane Addams and Lewis Hine. Jane Addams worked with
the Hull House to establish the Child Labor Law, were it restricted what
type of job and what a children can do. Lewis Hine was a photographer
and investigator for the National Child Labor Committee. The Commitee
made reports to the Library of Congress about the work description and
living condition of young childrens. Even though there was a positive side
to the reform movement, most families were being negativly afected by the
movement. Manufacturies started lowering the amount of worker in a
factory so they can still gain more profit. This led to many families loosing
their job and source of money to survive. “Child labor began to decline as
the labor and reform movements grew.”
