Introduction
In today’s society, the Young Urban Professional aka the Yuppies has played an
important role in the economy of Singapore. To design a living space for this group of
people, Functional and practical strategies need to be adopted not to mention other
residential needs such as networking, psychological, wellness.

With growing pressures on space, Singapore have shown a growing trend of taller
development more and more buildings as high as 20 floors is demolish to make way for
skyscrapers of 40‐ 50floors on the same piece of land. Examples of such development
are Pinnacle @ Duxton.

Area of Investigation
Using the case study of the Pinnacles @ Duxton, we’re going to see how this award
winner residential has explored on the idea of “flexible living” which consist the ability
to change the living space configuration. Furthermore, to explore the language of
modules that defines dwelling spaces. Investigate the issues pertaining to sustainability
in both social and environmental aspects, by exploring notions of “green space”.

Critiques and Analysis

With reference of the case study of the flexible apartment by Gary Chang, it shows that
a small unit could transform into 24 different setting. The advantage of it is that a lot of
spaces are being manipulated and made to full use. However, the house uses a lot of
mechanisms and moving walls. Thus, making the apartment looks complicated and not
visually appealing.

Issues / Questions
From the above case study, we learnt that with the help of flexible living, space would
be fully manipulated. However, not much of sustainability is seen. Also, not many
people like the way spaces are being used. Hence an example would be the pinnacle @
Duxton.

From the Pinnacle @ Duxton, the issues pertaining to sustainability is much being
brought up and emphasized. Blocks of buildings are linked together with Sky Bridge
which are then use as sky garden. With Sky garden, the issue on sustainability and green
space is much tackled. Pinnacle has repeated forms and shapes which underlies the
conceptual and constructional framework of mass social housing system. Hence, it
shows a potential of “modularity”.

open spaces between blocks allow natrual ventilation.

With skyparks, it helps to put more greeneries to the building and furthermore,
residents are able to enjoy great view of the city.

Nice Sky Bridge as link way.

However, the design uses simple stacking unit resulted in monotonous structure.
Furthermore, Units are too close to one another resulting in overcrowding and high
density.

Intention / Process

From the analysis above, we found out that having a sky park is much fond by the
residents and thus, a sky park could be considered.

After attempting to include the sky park, the building would be more environmental
sustainable. However, from the initial plan, the building only has one-way natural
ventilation. With more openings placed through the building and thus, increase in the
natural ventilation.
