Festival
presents
wide array
of talent

The Mercyhurst College Literary
Festival brings its second artist, author
Robert Coover on Tuesday April 11.
Coover, winner of the Willaim Faulkner
Award, will speak at 7:30 p.m in the
Taylor Little Theatre. The event is free
and open to the public.
Coover is a professor in the literary
arts program at Brown University. He
is also a renowned American writer.
He has written 15 books and his style
can be described as fabulation and
metaficiton.
Coover has written many novels, some
include “The Origin of the Brunists,”
“The Universal Baseball Association,
Inc.” “Pricksons and Descants,” A
Night at the Movies,” and “Pinocchio
in Venice.”
He has won a variety of awards that
include The William Faulkner Award
and has received the Dungannon
Foundation’s Michael M. Rea Award
for his lifetime contribution to the
short story.
Not only has Coover won awards, but
he has also contributed to the estab-
lishment of the Electronic Literature
Organization (ELO). The Electronic
Literature Organization is a non-profit
organization initiated in 1999 to pro-
mote the creation and enjoyment of
electronic literature.
English professor Dr. Kenneth Schiff,
discussed the selection of Robert
Coover as a speaker and the upcoming
events of the Literary Festival.
Schiff said he chose Coover to speak
because he was quite famous and is
an excellent writer. He thinks that
Coover is one of the major fiction
writers today.
Schiff has read some of Coover’s
short stories and enjoyed them because
they are experimental and interesting.
He hopes and expects that the audience
gains an appreciation of contemporary

MSG elections gives students a voice

The Mercyhurst Student Government
elections for the executive board will be
held on April 5 and 6.
The positions that students will vote
for will include president, vice president
(on the same ticket), treasurer and sec-
retary positions.
Elections will also be held on April
12 and 13 for MSG senior, junior,
sophomore, resident and commuter
representatives.
The voting will take place in the Stu-
dent Union on the dates mentioned
above.
This year there is a formal application
process to be completed in order to be
on the ballot.
In previous years, all that was needed
was a letter of intent.

Tuition jumps 6.2%
Students struggle to keep pace with rising tuition costs

Mercyhurst students may have to
reach deeper into their pockets next
year to accommodate their tuition bill.
According to Vice President of
Finance Jane Kelsey, tuition will hike
6.24 percent from the national average
of 5.9.
The increase, up 1.04 percent from
last year, rounds the total cost for the
2006-07 school year to $27,822 from
the current $26,187.
The new price will include: tuition at
$18,930, room and board at $7,458 and
mandatory fees at $1,434.
According to a release from the
financial aid office, the student govern-
ment fee will remain the same from the
2005-06 school year at $165. Room
rates increased 4.9 percent or $174,
while board rates increased six percent
or $210.
“In many aspects it is like we are run-
ning a small city,” said Kelsey. “There
are necessities that need to be paid:
trash removal, maintenance, water and
electric.”

In addition to this information, a
photograph of the candidate is also

All of this information will be made
available to voters on election day.
Ryan Palm, the current treasurer of
MSG, commented on this process.
“We feel this process is better than the
Letter of Intent process because this
will allow voters to have more informa-
tion about the candidates they are going
to select,” he said.
“Instead of blindly choosing candi-
dates, students now have the option of
reading up on the candidates and making
an informed choice,” he explained.
Palm went on to say that, “Just as in
the presidential or congressional elec-
tion, voters often wish to be informed

Kelsey noted that the increase is also
due to salaries. “We need to increase
salaries to attract and retain very good
faculty,” she said.

choice,” Palm added.
Anyone who plans to run for a MSG
position must fulfill the requirements of
completing the candidate form.
They must submit their personal
photograph and also read the “Rep-
resentative Application Information”
document on the MSG Web site.
Candidates must sign the last page of
this document before April 5.

the First Annual Colloquium of Edu-
cational Research and Teaching on
March 31.
This event will feature a number of
student presentations, panel discussions
and a presentation and question-and-
answer session by mental health expert
John Perricone.

in the Special Education Department,
said that, “the education department

All student presentations are from
Mercyhurst education majors who
have done research on everything from
bias in the classroom, to stereotypes
and socioeconomic status, as well as
a number of presentations on ways to
improve the classroom environment for
both students and teachers.
The panel discussions will feature
students who have chosen to modify
their courses by making them keystone
courses.
A keystone course, according to Auld,
is much like an honors course. These
students have simply chosen to go
above and beyond in the classroom in
order to enrich their experience.

You’ve got nothing “Tooloose”

This weekend, Kim McClelland,
the artistic director of the Roadhouse
Theater, opened a chic new store, Kim
miK’s Gallery Tooloose, at 2716 Peach
Street.
The small, inviting store offered soft
drinks as well as finger foods for the
fairly large crowd that rolled through
the doors.
Kim is calling her store a “curiod-
dessey” shop. We’ve all heard of curi-
osity shops before, but Kim wanted to
get a little creative...and she did! When I
entered the store I immediately thought

and authentic Indian artifacts ordered
straight from India and Morroco. In-

Kim has also incorporated clothing
into her store. I wasn’t able to talk with
Kim directly because she was so busy
with sales but I did overhear her talking
with customers.
Kim actually plans on getting many
more clothes into her shop but instead
of putting them up for sale she wants to
totally redesign them. When her clothing
comes in, Kim will, literally, take them
apart and add her own, creative twist to
the clothes.
The store has a very calming feel to
it. Candles and soothing light make
the customers really feel the presence
of what the store has to offer. Large
cushioned sofas, intricate fireplaces and
convenient tables invite the customers
to sit and enjoy the atmosphere.
Although Kim was busy and I was un-
able to speak with her, I got the chance
to speak with her husband instead. Scott
McClelland has been a large driving
force in helping to open the store.
My biggest question for Scott was
where his wife came up with the idea
for a store like this. Only living a few
blocks down the street, Kim regularly
passed the Victorian building and loved
its structure.
“She always told me that she loved
this house so much and she thought it

would be the perfect place to open a
store” Scott said.
The idea of running two businesses
at once was an idea that brought many
questions to mind for the couple, but
Scott knew that this is what Kim wanted
so they went for it.
They were allowed two months of
free rent to renovate the space and
really fix it up for the grand opening.
With new fixtures, paint, molding and
some rebuilding, the store became fully
functional and gives the eclectic space
character.
I also asked Scott where the name of
the store came from. “It was very Mou-
lin Rouge inspired. Kim loved the John
and thought it would be a cool idea
to name her store after him – she just
spelled it differently,” Scott said, and
pointed to the painting on their sign.
“This is a character of one of his paint-
ings too. She loves his designs.”
Scott pointed out to me that there is
really something for everyone in this
store. Gorgeous antiques, contempo-
rary art, exotic incense, unique henna
and goat skin lamps, greeting cards,
calendars, ’60s inspired posters as well
as scented oils and soaps are only some
of the treasures that can be found at
McClelland’s store.
Prices are very reasonable, and I saw
Kim even bargain with a customer. She
just wants people to get what they want
at a reasonabe price. The store will be
open Tuesday through Saturday 2-8
p.m.

Spring and summer fash-

essence of nautical all the way
back to the Navy sailors’

possess a fun, vintage ap-

Most importantly about this
look is to remember not to com-
bine too many nautical pieces
into one outfit (you don’t want
to look like a cheesy sailor, do
you?).
Fortunately, this season there
is a larger variety of pieces to
choose from to get just the right
amout of nautical in your outfit.
A safe bet is simply pairing solid

Two Mercyhurst dance majors
will be living out their dreams
by performing in New York City
this April.

lege in New York to perform a
historic ballet piece at the Shar-

The Mercyhurst dancers will
perform a dance named “Little
Improvisations” that was origi-
nally choreographed in 1953 by
Antony Tudor. Assistant Profes-
sor of Dance C. Noelle Partusch
reconstructed and taught the
dance to the students.
This year’s conference theme
is “Reconstructions of the 20th
Century.” Ten colleges from
across the country are planning
to participate.
“We’re one of the smallest col-
leges going (to the conference),”
said Partusch. Mercyhurst has
one of only two ballets in the
conference.
Partusch said being chosen
for the conference is “a feather
in the hat for these dancers and
the school.”
When asked about the up-
coming performance, Bonfante
said, “I’m a little nervous about
performing in New York City.

is definitely considered a hub in
the dance world.

consists of movements that are
meant to mimic the games and
things the siblings make up in
their nursery.
“The movement itself tells
the story. It’s not just gorgeous
movement with emotion thrown
on top of it,” said Partusch. It’s
not a typical, “accomplished”
piece like traditional ballets, she
explained.
“It’s supposed to look like kids

not created for the novice dancer.

Tudor created the movements
so that it feels very awkward to

accuracy, Partusch is using her
memory, a video and a com-
plicated form of written dance
movements known as Labono-
tation. Every element of the
performance is being carefully
analyzed from the movements to
the props to the costumes.

lege admissions.
In the case of our own institution, it is believed
by many that Mercyhurst does not have a diverse
student body. Whoever makes such a remark is
obviously ignorant of the fact that diversity is not
a black and white issue.
The truth is we have a very diverse student body,
although it may not be obvious by simply looking
at people.
We have international students from all over the
world and students from many different regions
of the country.
On the surface yes, a majority of the student
body come from Caucasian middle class lifestyles.
However, if you actually engage in conversation
with people outside of your safe social circle, you
will soon realize that the variety of which I am
speaking is not far below the surface.
If schools truly want to emphasize a diverse
student body they will look past the box marked
‘ethnicity’ on applications and look at the applica-
tion and interviews to see the individual for who
they really are and not a future statistic that they
will proudly display in the Princeton Review.

Global warming advertisements: Start counting ‘carbs’

Nothing creates a sense of urgency quite like a ticking clock or
speeding train.
In startling ads debuting Thursday, the Ad Council, the group that
created some of the most memorable public-service ads in history,
agitates for action now to slow global warming.
Going straight to the public, the highly respected nonprofit bypasses
the ideological stalemate in Washington and brings the long contro-
versial issue into the mainstream. A successful campaign could inspire
long-needed aggressive action on this growing global threat.
Evidence mounts daily that melting ice caps, unusual weather and
tropical-disease outbreaks are linked to the Earth’s increasing tem-
perature. Scientists increasingly believe the world is headed toward
a tipping point, after which no action may be able to stop flooding,
disease and species extinction. As the world’s worst contributor to
the problem, the United States needs to step up.
Through history, the 64-year-old Ad Council has motivated people
with now-familiar phrases and old friends: “A mind is a terrible thing
to waste,” “The toughest job you’ll ever love,” and “Friends don’t
let friends drive drunk.” It used Rosie the Riveter to recruit workers,
Smokey Bear to fight fires, and Iron Eyes Cody to Keep America
Beautiful.
As in past campaigns, the Ad Council aims to change attitudes
one person at a time, not by lobbying Congress or the White House.
Polling shows that Americans believe global warming is real, but con-
sequences are distant. Even if they want to mitigate climate change’s
effects, they don’t know what to do. The ads prod them into wanting
to act and then show them how.
In partnership with Environmental Defense, the council created a
cute icon a globe, belted with a tape measure to encourage Americans
to count “carbs,” as in carbon dioxide, a main contributor to climate
change. At fightglobalwarming.com, citizens will find easy steps to
reduce harmful heat-trapping gas emissions around the house.
Alone, actions such as running only fully loaded dishwashers and
washing machines seem trivial. But collectively, millions of Americans
pitching in could make a difference.
If every household replaced three regular light bulbs with new
compact fluorescents, the United States could save the equivalent
in emissions of taking 3.5 million cars of the road. Plus consumers
will save money. Although more expensive to buy, the fluorescent
bulbs last 13 times longer. Energy efficiency is the heart of many
of the “low-carb” ideas.
The Ad Council inspired Americans to buy war bonds, wear seat
belts, prevent crime and protect themselves from AIDS. It has the
right message again: Protect the planet.

Why is Facebook so popular with students . . .and now faculty and staff? What’s the big deal?
Sadly I cannot join in all the fun which takes place
on Facebook because I do not have an account. I
can’t say that I’m anti-Facebook because I would
be a hypocrite.
I have a bunch of pictures posted on Webshots.
When I’m falling asleep reading in front of my
computer, I

just bored and
need something to take my mind of how much
homework sucks.
I think Facebook is just a much larger elaboration
on this phenomenon. Instead of a small profile on
AIM, you can have a much larger and funnier one
on Facebook. If you end up spending 30 minutes
just laughing at funny stuff on Facebook rather
than doing work, mission completed. We all need
some laughs everyday and if you can get that off
of Facebook, then it’s not so bad after all.
I’ve also heard of a bunch of people who are
contacted from old friends through Facebook.
When you can hook up with someone whom you
haven’t seen in years because of Facebook, then it’s
served another good purpose as well.
Unfortunately, there is the new controversy about
people other than your friends scoping your profile
online. When Mercyhurst faculty and staff mem-
bers are encouraged to create profiles and check out
their students online, this is a gross violation of our
privacy. Please don’t try and claim that it’s in our
best interests because the last time I checked, I’m
pretty sure most of us were adults and could make
conscious decisions when posting things online.
For the idiotic person who doesn’t know that
anything they place online could be viewed by
anyone (especially future employers), they deserve
any type of repercussions that come from putting
up an incriminating photograph.
It’s really sad to find out that once again the ad-
ministration is overstepping its bounds and claim-
ing that they’re only trying to stop students from
making poor decisions. What students choose to
do in private is their choice, and they are the only
people that have to take responsibility for those ac-
tions. I know I certainly didn’t come to college to
be lectured both in and outside of the classroom.
Ever since Facebook came to Mercyhurst way
back last year, students have been using it as a
forum for expression and recreation.
I even know a few guys who used it to talk to
freshman girls before they even came to campus.

Yes it’s true, and just like any bunch there are a
few bad apples that threaten to spoil everything!
Rather than putting pictures of themselves
playing checkers and doing charity work, these
irresponsible few opted to depict themselves par-
tying and doing other things that people who go
to real college do.
Naturally, the adventurous minds that constitute
the administration at Mercyhurst smelled fun and
wanted to get involved…who could blame them?
It was only after they got past the “Erie winter
sucks” club that the reality of the situation hit
home for them.
After a thorough investigation, they came to
some shocking realizations about Mercyhurst
students. We were not only drinking, but we were
doing drugs as well, and sometimes we took pic-
tures of ourselves doing it.
Immediately they set out on a mission to save us
from ourselves. What would happen if Grandma
Gertrude, Professor Perkins, Sam the Stalker or
anyone else who suffers from name alliteration
saw those pictures or some other important piece
of information? What would happen?!
The truth of the matter is that this is not and
should not be the concern of the faculty of the
college but the concern of the students who
manage a Facebook profile. There are instances
where community among students and faculty are
appropriate and desirable but Facebook certainly
isn’t one of them.
Having gotten this off my chest, I am going to
categorize the nude pictures I posted last night.

Last Saturday the annual Battle
of the Bands took place at the
Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Students experienced the Slam
Poetry of Gary Williams and per-
formances by 10 of Erie’s bands.
Only one band walked away with
the $500 prize though.
Quince.

Zawistoski, rocked the MAC and
walked away with the recognition
they deserve.
Quince plans to use the money
from the competition to record-

Sick of seeing previews for
comedies that trick you into
thinking they are something that
will make you laugh so hard that
your side hurts?
If so, comedian Larry the
Cable Guy who brought you the
famous saying “Git-R-Done” of
the “Blue Collar Comedy Tour,”
will break the cycle of disap-
pointment with his laugh out
loud new movie called “Larry the
Cable Guy: Health Inspector.”
Filled with nonstop politically
incorrect phrases and good ole
bathroom humor, this film is
guaranteed to make you laugh
more than any other standard
comedy of today.
Before the basic plot of the
film, you should be aware that
this movie is definitely of interest
to the Erie audience.
Fifteen minutes before show
time Friday, March 24, “Larry
the Cable Guy: Health Inspec-
tor” was pronounced sold out
for that time slot.
Now to the plot. ‘Larry the
Cable Guy: Health Inspector’
is about a man named Larry
who works in a profession that
demands order and cleanliness
from its clients, but he himself
is anything but.
Larry is a man who is incred-
ibly messy and pretty much flat
out disgusting and who isn’t fond

Mercyhurst Community Club
(with SAC’s help) to raise money
for the Community of Caring.
The Community of Caring
is a shelter in Erie that is for
homeless persons with mental
illness, substance abusers (drug
& alcohol) and anyone in need of
emergency temporary shelter.
Club Vice President Katie Beil
says, “At the event we raised over
$200, which is really an accom-
plishment for our club.”

Jesse Cook responded, “…the
only way to really have a lifelong
career in the music business is to
do it on a worldwide scale.”
Jesse Cook was born in Paris,
and at three and a half years
old moved to Canada, where he
grew up.
His mother had an insatiable
interest in flamenco music, so she
gave her son a guitar.
This was only the beginning of
this fantastic performer’s music
career.
He instantly became a connois-
seur of music, exploring sounds
from all over the world.
His signature style of play-
ing can heavily be attributed to
the percussive approach of the
Gipsy Kings.
To further his studies, Jesse

‘Reservoir Dogs’ explodes on stage

Try your best to avoid pictur-
ing the well-known director
of the “Kill Bill” volumes and
“Reservoir Dogs” in leotards
and Shakespearean ruffles after
this next sentence.

Well, not him exactly, but the
Roadhouse Theatre’s adaptation
of “Reservoir Dogs” certainly
does a great job of bringing his
characters to the Erie audience.
The Roadhouse Theatre re-
ceived special permission from
Tarantino to adapt his mov-
ie script into a stage perfor-
mance.
This year marks the 10th pro-
duction of “Reservoir Dogs”
at the Roadhouse, so if you’re
wondering if the transition from
stage to screen really works, the
answer is yes.
Answering the ‘why’ is more
complicated, but without de-
stroying the mysticism behind
the magic of the theater too
much, there are a couple rea-
sons the show seems to be so
For one, there is a blend of
Tarantino’s film produced ele-
ments and stage-necessitated
changes that make the show
fluid and real…and funny.
Tarantino’s super sounds of
the Seventies musical choic-
es from Roadhouse Theatre’s
speakers are powerful tools that
bridge the gap between the big
screen and the open stage.
Then of course, the actors.
From stature to voice quality,
the actors are able to success-
fully mirror Tarantino’s originals.
The physical likeness of nearly
all the characters to their Hol-
lywood counterparts was really
amazing.
The most impressive resem-
blance of the group was by
artist Mark Gardener, (his art is
on display in the theatre) who
played the role of Mr. Pink.
Steve Buscemi played this
character in the motion picture.
Gardener captured the same
mannerisms Buscemi employed
in the movie with great suc-
cess.
If Mr. Pink was one of your
favorites in the movie, he will be
on stage, too.
Mr. Blonde (Michael Madison)
and fits the role to a tee. From
soda sipping to ear-severing cha-
cha-cha’s, you’ll be impressed
with his performance.
Director Scott McClelland
played the role of Joe Cabot,
and is responsible for bringing
the production to the stage.
While the actors (others in-
clude Rick DiBello, Mike Lech-
ner, Chris Bucci, John Biggie
and Bryan Lechner) all worked
together flawlessly to recre-
ate the tension of Tarantino’s
scenes, there is something to be
said for staging and effects.
The lighting effects and scene
staging only add to the produc-
tion, pulling the audience into
a completely believable and
entertaining experience.
Performances are Fridays and
Saturdays at 8 p.m. until May 6.

‘The Fray’s’ unprejudice appeal

Film, “Paradise Now” examines the bonds of friendship tested in a time of hardship.

“Paradise Now” is a gripping
and timely story of two men who
are recruited as suicide bombers
by a Palestinian organization.
Saïd (Kais Nashef) and Khaled
(Ali Suliman) are childhood
friends who work as auto me-
chanics together in the West bank
city of Nablus.
When a Palestinian man in-
forms Saïd that he and his friend
have been appointed to carry out
a suicide mission in Tel-Aviv,
the two men must spend their
last 48 hours preparing for the
mission while keeping the plan
a complete secret from their
loved ones.
As the impending mission
weighs in on the two men, Saïd
begins having doubts when he
thinks of his girlfriend, Suha
(Lubna Azabal) and her differing
views about the act of violence
against Israelis.
Nevertheless, Saïd and Khaled
decide the promise of a glori-
ous afterlife in “paradise” is a
fair exchange for the suicide
bombings.
As the duo cross into Israel,
the plan goes array, and Khaled

backs out of the mission. Saïd,
however, decides to continue
on alone.
Suha and Khaled travel to-
gether to find Saïd and try to
change his mind before it’s too
late. This is a compelling movie
that reveals the lengths that some
will go to if they believe that their
rewards will be even greater in
paradise.
“Paradise Now” also exempli-
fies the great bond between two
friends and how far one friend
will go to save another. “Paradise
Now” will play on Wednesday,
April 5 at 2 and 8 p.m. in the
PAC.

Upon seeing that commercial
on VH1 for “Artists You Outta
Know” for the thousandth time,
I finally decided to go online and
see exactly what bands VH1 felt
were so groundbreaking.
According to VH1, The Fray
was one of these bands (I’m
sure this isn’t new information
to you if you have watched VH1
for more than 20 minutes at a
given time).
Shortly after all those commer-
cials ran, I read someone describ-
ing The Fray as a cross between
Jimmy Eat World and Coldplay (a
cross between anyone and Cold-
play is going to grab my attention
– I don’t care if the other artist is
Wang Chung).
I knew then that I had to check
this band out.
So, curiosity getting the best of
me, I decided to check out their
album, “How to Save a Life.”
Now I know this CD came out
in September, so it isn’t techni-
cally a new release, but it is good,
so you should know about it.
The CD starts off with the
song “She Is,” which is a nice
opener to the disc, and gives
you the idea of what you are in
for from the rest of the album
as well.
The next track, “Over My Head
(Cable Car),” was the single re-
leased, and is one of my favorites,
along with “All at Once.”
“Over My Head” is a song
that is very easy to relate to for
everyone.
It talks about how even though
you are in a situation that you
think is perfectly under control
and you can come out on top, ev-
eryone else knows that in reality
you are in way over your head.
As everything comes to a
crashing halt you still think that
everything is fine, but then the
reality of you being a “part of the
past / the part that doesn’t last”
in someone’s life finally kicks in.
“All at Once” is a song written
about someone who is trying
to find that “perfect person” to
be with, a situation I think we
have all encountered, either first
or second-hand, being college
students.
The song is saying that instead
of sitting around and trying to
find the person that will offer you
no doubts whatsoever that they
are “the one,” just get out there
and open your eyes.
Someone you see all the time
could be perfect for you but you
may never see it.
Perfection is impossible to find,
and the person you are looking
past might not wait around much
longer for you to make up your
mind – then you will be left with
nothing at all.
My only gripe with this album
is that the CD starts off so up-
beat, but then the second half of
it is almost all slower songs.
They should have done a better
job of mixing the order because
I have a feeling that most people
will never go past the halfway
point in the CD after a few
listens.
The songs aren’t bad, they
are just too mellow to be placed
one after the other in the order
they are.
This band can be appreciated
by anyone – I let someone bor-
row the CD over spring break
and they told me that not only
did they like it, their parents did
as well.
That’s not a statement meant to
deter you from giving this a go,
just to show you how versatile
this band really is. If you like
music, you’ll like this CD.
It’s that simple.

Experience the relationships and tensions couples fight to overcome in “Junebug.”

“Junebug” tells the story of an art curator George’s new wife.

meeting her husband’s eccentric family for the
first time. Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz) is the
high-society British woman who travels to North
Carolina to visit a rural artist who happens to live
near her in-laws.
She is astonished when she meets George’s
family in N.C.
Amy Adams (nominated for an Oscar for Best
Supporting Actress) delivers an outstanding per-
formance as the quirky Ashley, the high-spirited
sister-in-law who is expecting her first child with
her husband, Johnny (Benjamin McKenzie).
This film is an excellent interpretation of the
experience we all face when we meet a significant
other’s family for the first time.
Peg (Celia Weston) is the uptight, critical mother
She seems to want the best for her sons, but
in the process does not consider what they want
for their lives.
The father of the family, Eugene (Scott Wil-
son) is overshadowed by his controlling wife and
spends most of his time secluded from the rest
of the family.
They have gotten used to their everyday life in
N.C. and when George and Madeleine come to
visit, the whole family is turned upside down.
“Junebug” re-examines the relationship between
family and what is most important in life. Mad-
eleine learns more about George and begins to
realize that she must love his family for who they
are and be there for them over anything else.

Asisstant coach pays off for baseball

New hitting coach Tom Cashman overcomes car accident to teach the game he loves at Mercyhurst

Tom Cashman had a promising
future in baseball ahead of him.
He was a top prospect among
several Major League teams, and
was a standout player in his two
years as a starting first baseman at
the University of Pittsburgh.
A severe injury to his domi-
nant throwing and power hand
changed all that.
Cashman is the new hitting
coach of the baseball team at
Mercyhurst and has had an im-
mediate impact.
The baseball team has gotten
off to a great start this season,
and Cashman has played a large
role in the team’s development.
The team batting average so far
is .347, higher than last year’s by
100 points.
Through the first 21 games of
the season, the Lakers have six
homeruns and have outscored
their opponents 154-88.
The offensive production is a
huge turnaround from last sea-
son when the Lakers won with

Two years ago, Cashman, in
his senior year at the University
of Pittsburgh, was one of the
top prospects in college baseball
when a car accident that severed a
tendon in his right hand changed
everything.
The rehab on the injury was
extensive, but Cashman could
not return to the form he was in
when he played at Pitt.
At the time, he was being
scouted by such Major League
teams as the Pittsburgh Pirates,
Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati
Reds, Montreal Expos (now
the Washington Nationals), Se-
attle Mariners, and San Diego
Padres.
Cashman was a junior college
transfer when he went to Pitt.
His baseball eligibility as a Pan-
ther lasted two years.
He went undrafted, but hooked
up with the Mid-Missouri Mav-
ericks of the Frontier League.
The Buffalo, N.Y., native was not
comfortable in Missouri, and his
stint there lasted only a couple
of weeks.
He returned to Buffalo and
remained there until he got an
offer from the Padres to play on
the Richmond Roosters of the
Frontier League.
With a solid performance in the
minors, Tom would have had the
opportunity to play at the Major
League level.
However, his hand injury pre-
vented him from moving up
any further in the professional
ranks.
For the first summer in a long
time, Cashman in 2005 was out
of the game of baseball.
“I was down for quite a while.
Being away from baseball was
something I was not used to at
all,” he said.
By coincidence Cashman found
his way to Mercyhurst College.
Spano was running a baseball
camp last summer, and Cash-
man’s brother was scheduled to
take part.
The summer camp fell through,
and Spano called the Cashman
house to break the news.
Tom Cashman took the call be-
cause his brother wasn’t home.
Spano and Cashman talked
baseball, and Spano invited
Cashman to Mercyhurst in the
fall to help with the team as a
consultant.
After attending several prac-
tices, Cashman agreed to stay on
as the team’s hitting instructor.
The decision has paid dividends
to both the Mercyhurst baseball
program and for Cashman.
“Just to be back around the
game and actively involved has
helped me out a lot,” he said.
“Once I settled in here I started
having fun. I’ve gotten to know
the guys really well and we have
become really close. Hopefully I
will be back next year too.”
Cashman has had a positive
impact on the program in just a
short time.
“Tom is an excellent teacher.
He is very knowledgeable in the
game of baseball overall, not
only as a hitting coach,” Spano
said. “He takes his role very
seriously and I have really gotten
the sense that the players are con-
necting with him. His strength is
the one-on-one attention that he
gives to each player.”
Cashman had a bright future in
baseball, and despite his injury,
his future burns bright now as a
coach in the sport that he loves.
His road back to the game has
not been an easy one, but he did
it all for the love of the game.

Lakers grab a Knight Leisering retires

Shelby Chaney, a three-year
letterman on Gannon’s basket-
ball team, closed out last season
with a win against the Mercyhurst
Lakers.
Chaney will do the unthinkable
(to the Gannon community) and
open next season playing for
Gary Manchel and the Lakers
rather than against them.
Chaney, who has said he is
leaving Gannon due to a dis-
agreement on playing style with
first-year head coach John Reilly
told Duane Rankin of the Erie
Times-News that Mercyhurst is
his new team and he can’t wait
to get started.
“I feel like I am a good jump
shooter and I want to show that,”
Chaney also told the Times-
News.
The Lakers were in desperate
need of a big man down low with
the graduation of Jeff Daisley
and Andy Kubinski and the team
hopes that Chaney will step in
and fill or even improve the Lak-
ers at the forward position.
“I’ve coached against him for
three years and anybody you have
to double team as a scouting
report, shows a sign of respects
and a sign of talent,” Manchel
told the Times-News.
Chaney a 6-9, 240-pound for-
ward, has shown signs of an
above average player while play-
ing for the Golden Knights.
In his sophomore year, Chaney
averaged 14.8 points per game
and was named to the All-GLI-
AC team.
Last season Chaney was second
on Gannon in scoring (12.0 ppg)
and rebounding (9.4 rpg).

to know the secrets of a team
that has suddenly thrust itself
into the national consciousness
with its improbable run to the
Final Four.
“I’m very worn down right
now,” Larranaga said, “but there’s
nothing I’d rather be doing than
this.”
He was asked if he’d be re-
cruiting right now if not for this
strange confluence of players
and moment, this run to India-
napolis.
“I am recruiting right now,”
he said.
Indeed. No matter how high
your recruiting budget, no matter
how many seats you can put in a
new building, nothing gets the
attention of a young man with
a sweet jumper like being on
national television. Mason had
the country all to itself Sunday
when it knocked off Connecti-
cut. Saturday, the Patriots will
again be on center stage, playing
Florida in the first of two na-
tional semifinals.

now would be folly. If they beat

Former Laker playing pro lacrosse

What do you get when you
have 23 men from such differ-
ent careers as college student,
teacher, police officer, firefighter,
coach, and businessman? They
all share a common dream: the
dream of playing professional
lacrosse.
One of those students is Mer-
cyhurst’s graduating senior Mi-
chael McLellan. Not only is he a
student, he is also a professional
lacrosse player for the Arizona
Sting.
Instead of packing up his
bags and moving to Arizona,
he found himself back here to
finish school while also playing
professional lacrosse.
“It is very difficult. I am very
grateful that I have professors
who are understanding when I
miss some classes and have to
hand assignments in late. On the
positive, those long plane rides all
over the country give me plenty
of time to get my stuff done,”
said McLellan.

The Mercyhurst softball strug-
gled with inconsistency at the
Salem Invitational, finishing
with a 2-3 record in the tourna-
ment held Saturday and Sunday
in Virginia.
On Saturday, the Lakers started
the day’s play in a promising
fashion overpowering, Salem
International 6-3. Jacquie Theu-
rer performed impressively in
the opening game, registering
the first homerun of her college
career.
Theurer, a senior, described
the first homer of her career as
a “nice feeling.”
“I was just glad I could help.
Sometimes it’s not the run that
helps, but just getting the team
excited,” said Theurer.
In the bottom of the fourth the
Lakers trailed 2-1 before a burst
of four runs enabled them to
gain full control of the contest
and pick up the win.
The day’s second game saw
the Lakers shutout by a strong
Kutztown team, ranked No. 5 in
the Mid-Atlantic region.
Jen Feret conceded just two
runs in six innings of work, but
unfortunately for the Lakers,
Kutztown’s Stacey Denlinger was
even better, pitching a complete
game shutout.
Denlinger struck out 11 of her
opponents and didn’t allow the
Lakers any easy opportunities to
get back on track following the
Bears early 2-0 lead.
The Lakers failed to rebound
from this defeat and dropped
the day’s final game 3-2 to Ship-
pensburg.
Despite the well-known pedi-
gree of the Shippensburg’s soft-
ball program - ranked 20th nation-
ally and first in the Mid-Atlantic
region - the Lakers came very
close to picking up what would
have been a notable scalp.
However, it wasn’t meant to

from Jessica McNurlen and Me-
lissa Rizzo, their second and third
on the season respectively.
Sunday, the Lakers returned to
action with a bang easily dispos-
ing of Shepherd University 7-2.
Melissa Rizzo performed ex-
ceptionally, supplying two hits,
including a double in a nine-hit
attack.
The Lakers lack of consistency
came to the fore once again as
they dropped the tournaments
final game to West Virginia Wes-
leyan by a score of 5-3.
The scores were deadlocked at
2-2 before Wesleyan scored three
runs in the fourth inning to finish
off the Lakers.
On a more positive note, fresh-
man Jennifer Popinski and Kim
Griffin were both named to the
All-tournament team.
Theurer described Griffin’s
accomplishment as “well de-
served.”
“She’s amazing, she has really
stepped it up this year and has
been a real spark for our offense
as well,” said Theurer.
Griffin felt the weekend went
well but could have gone better.
“We played a couple of good
teams and we were right there
with them, we just couldn’t get
that extra push when we needed
it,” said Griffin.
“We have the ability to beat
any team we play, we just need
to step it up when it matters,”
said Griffin.
The Lakers will begin Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (GLIAC) play on
Tuesday, April 4, with a double-
header at cross-town rivals Gan-
non.
The first game is scheduled for
a 3 p.m. start.

down there that early. I get there

The Mercyhurst College wom-
en’s lacrosse team experienced
another whirlwind week as they
took the field three times and
garnered their first individual
honor of the season.
Tuesday, freshman Breanna
Haggerty was named Division II
Rookie of the Week by Women’s
Lacrosse.com.
Haggerty earned the honor
after scoring a combined seven
goals with four assists in the
Lakers’ wins over Seton Hill and
East Stroudsburg. She scored
four goals and added an assist in
a 20-2 win over the Griffins and
then notched three more goals
and three assists in a 19-6 victory
against the Warriors.
Thursday, the Lakers played
host to Notre Dame (Ohio). It
took Courney Olevnik just 12
seconds to put Mercyhurst on the
board, scoring off the opening
draw when she was able to con-
vert on a feed from Haggerty.
Olevnik scored her second of
five goals at 26:44, off the first
of a Laker season-high six assists
by Kelsey French. French also
notched two goals on the day.
After scores by French and
Lauren Smith gave Mercyhurst a
4-0 lead, Olevnik scored again at
23:31 from Kristen Toomey.
French fed Olevnik again for
her fourth goal of the game at
18:37 for a 6-1 lead. Lindsay
Jackson, Haggerty, French and
Jessie Horeth all scored before
a free position shot by Toomey
with 19 seconds left in the half
gave the Lakers an 11-1 lead.

that each time I get on the floor

“I fly to all the games except for
the ones (we) played in Rochester
in which I drove up. I usually fly
to Cleveland from Erie. From
Cleveland, I then fly to wherever
the game might be.” The team
pays his fares.
“College and pro are different,
he explained. “In college I played
attack. It’s more just an offensive
position where you’re counted on
to produce points.
“Pro is more like hockey, quick
shifts, more of an up tempo
game and way more physical. In
pro we have guys who play spe-
cific positions and in my case I’m
a forward,” McLellan said.
While playing for Mercyhurst
College, McLellan was a great
asset to the team. He played two
years for the Lakers and helped
the team make the NCAA Divi-
sion II Final Four in 2004.
He started all 14 games in

Playing in a summer league
gives him a better chance of
being seen.
“There is a draft like football
and hockey, etc. Playing summer
lax in Canada helps with all the
draft stuff because most coaches
and also general managers have
more access to your games. Gen-
eral managers will usually notify
you about interest,” he said.
McLellan got drafted his first
time around in August 2005 in
Edmonton, Canada, while play-
ing on a summer league for the
Brooklin Redmen of Toronto.
Since the sport of lacrosse
has not yet grown to be a com-
monly known sport, exposure
for college level recognition is
much harder, especially playing
in Division II.
“I think that we knew that he
was going to get drafted, but not
how high. We were happy for
Mike. I think it speaks highly
of him,” said Mercyhurst head

outscored Mercyhurst 11-2 in
the half for a 13-3 advantage at

French opened the second half
scoring to make it 13-4 before the
Panthers erupted for three suc-

way as Adelphi came out with an
18-6 victory.

“Having Mike play professional
lacrosse helps receive more ex-
posure for our program here at
Mercyhurst. It allows recruits to
know what kind of lacrosse pro-
gram that we have here and will
receive here,” Ryan added.
Lacrosse is a growing sport, but
it still struggles for spectators and
sponsorship deals. “Obviously, I
would love to make what a bas-
ketball player or football player
makes, but that will not happen.
I would say I would just like to
see the sport thrive and succeed
because I know it has the poten-
tial,” he said.
“People always say that pro lax
players play the hardest for the
lowest amount and I think that’s
a compliment. Fifteen years ago
this league didn’t exist and slowly
but surely it’s becoming a sport
that people want to see.”
McLellan has advice for college
lacrosse players.
“I would say that playing sport
is a privilege and that each time
you put the pads on you give
your all. You never know who
is watching.”

After an impressive non-con-
ference start to the season com-
piling an 11-6 record, the Mer-
cyhurst Lakers baseball team
opened up their GLIAC play
with a pair of double headers
against No. 13 ranked Ashland
University.
The games were set to begin at
noon on Saturday, March 25, but
were pushed back a couple hours
due to inclement weather.
When things finally got under-
way, the competing pitchers stole

They suffered their first setback
of the season in a hard fought
8-4 loss.
Goaltender Mike Bringley was
spectacular between the pipes for
the Lakers.
His 10 saves that do not nearly
do justice to the quality goaltend-

eventually falling 3-2.
Despite committing fewer
errors than Ashland and out-
hitting them, the Lakers lost a
heartbreaker when Ashland’s
Ron Oneson doubled home the

Lakers failed to score in the bot-
tom half of the inning.
Sophomore pitcher James Lud-
wig took the loss for the Lakers,
after relieving Eric Drobotij in
the sixth inning.

Ashland took advantage of a

The Lakers substituted liber-
ally as the game progressed and
eventually used 34 players of its
37-man roster.
Four goaltenders saw action
with Bringley playing the first 27
minutes to pick up the decision.
In the end, the Lakers walked
3-run third inning and went on
to win by a score of 4-1.
After the weekend’s play, the
Lakers fall to 12-9 on the season,
and 1-3 within the Great Lakes
Conference. As for the Eagles,
they continue a strong season
and are 21-4 overall and 3-1 in
the conference.
The Lakers will continue their
GLIAC play next weekend when
the Wayne State Warriors visit
Mercyhurst for another pair of
double header games.
Wayne State was in action this
past weekend at Gannon, where
the Warriors went 4-0 against the
Knights to move their season’s
record to 5-13.
Action will begin at noon on
April 1.
