King's legacy lives o n in Lowery, others w h o m a r c h e d for Civil^Rights

During much of the civil
rights movement, the Rev. Jo-
seph Lowery stood in the shad-
ow of the Rev. Martin Luther
King Jr.
Like many of the foot soldiers
that marched and rallied in de-
fiance of segregation laws in the
South during the 1950s and
1960s, Lowery helped to bring
the movement to the forefront
of America's consciousness.
Yet much of his work went un-
noticed, overshadowed by the
memory of a beloved martyr.
On Monday, the nation was
observing King's 74th birthday
as a federal holiday. While
many Americans believe there
would have been no national
civil rights movement without
King, activists agree that with-
out people such as Lowery and
others who were not in the
limelight, the war on segrega-
tion could not have been won.
When King needed someone
to deliver the list of demands
to Alabama Gov. George Wal-
lace during the historic march
from Selma to Montgomery, he
turned to Lowery, a respected
Methodist minister who had led
local protests in Alabama.
When King was gathering a
group of ministers together in
Atlanta to form the Southern
Christian Leadership Confer-
ence the group that fueled the
movement Lowery came up
from Mobile to become a co-
founder. And when King deliv-
ered his "I Have a Dream"
speech in Washington, Lowery
stood only a few feet away.
Following King's assassina-
tion in 1968, Lowery was
among those left to carry on the

applying to college, and later to
graduate school, he could rely
on something far more power-
ful than affirmative action: He
could count on affirmative in-
fluence.
After an undistinguished aca-
demic career at New Haven, he
was accepted at Harvard Busi-
ness School.
With the Bush administration
filing a brief opposing the Uni-
versity of Michigan's use of
what Bush calls "quotas," Dem-
ocrats contended that the pres-

his country in order to avoid a
war.
Despite Rumsfeld's com-
ments, he and other adminis-
tration officials continued what
appears to be a march toward
war. Rumsfeld and Secretary
of State Colin Powell said the
question was not whether Unit-
ed Nations weapons inspectors
find a "smoking gun" in Iraq
which they say they have not
but whether Saddam is assist-
ing the international effort to
find and dismantle weapons of
mass destruction.
"The test is, is Saddam Hus-
sein cooperating or is he not
cooperating?" Rumsfeld said
Sunday on Fox. "That's what

own voice was not easy. But
Lowery rose to the forefront,
and 35 years later, he is still
fighting for the economic pari-
ty and social justice that eludes
many Americans.
"The civil rights struggle is
not over," Lowery, 81, said in
an interview at his office on
Auburn Avenue, once the hub
of civil rights activities. "Some
of us are living the dream, but
most people, including whites,
are not. Today's generation
does not have to worry about
lunch counters and sitting at the
back of the bus. But they do
have to deal with police brutal-
ity and getting unj ustly fired and
abused at the workplace. Ev-
erything has change, and noth-
ing has changed."
People sometimes ask Low-
ery if he resents so much of
the attention going to one man.
In a demanding, raspy voice,
he quickly answers, "No."
He does worry, though, that
the message of the civil rights
movement has been lost in the
hoopla. Across the country, the
holiday was celebrated with
concerts, parades and a day off
from school or work. Saturday
night, the King Center in Atlan-
ta hosted its annual $200-a-plate
banquet at a glitzy downtown
hotel. Lowery was not there.
He never has been.
"I think Martin would appre-
ciate the honor and respect. Ev-
erybody does. But that was not
his main thing. I think he would
be disappointed that people
have too much honor-the-
preacher and ignore the ser-
mon," he said. "He was com-
fortable with kings and princ-
es, and with paupers and
pimps. He was man of the
ident, who clearly benefited
from a legacy of preference, is
a flawed messenger to inveigh
against affirmative action.
"It's the inherited advantage,"
said Democratic consultant
Frank Greer. "There is a degree
of hypocrisy with his grand-
standing against Trent Lott be-

an issue which he could have
stayed out of." Republicans
said Bush was standing up for
a core belief.

politics, Bush ensured that
there will be a battle over civil
rights between now and the

war demonstrations in Ameri-
ca and abroad, Powell, Rums-
feld and National Security Ad-

tion's "15 Greatest Black
Preachers" and the NAACP
hailed him as "dean of the civil
rights movement." In addition,
the Joseph E. Lowery Institute
for Justice and Human Rights
was established at Clark Atlan-
ta University, an Atlanta street
was named for him and the At-
lanta Public Schools system
created a lecture series in his
honor.
One of the things that made
the civil rights movement work,
according to some historians,
is that there were many com-
petent people involved in it. And
King, they said, understood that
as well as anyone.
"All of these people were
unique individuals, and King un-
derstood that he was not better
than the others by some incal-
culable measure," said David
Garrow, a historian at Emory
University.
Rev. Lowery was actively in-
volvedfromthe beginning, but
he was less well-known large-
ly by accident of geography.
When Birmingham was in the
news, he was in Nashville, and
by the time he got to Birming-
ham, things had moved to Sel-
ma.
"We have an old saying that
for everyone, voting is a sacred
right. But for us (blacks), it is
a moral obligation. One of our
biggest problems is getting
young people energized," Low-
ery said. "That kind of spiritual
energy has to come from with-
in. And the old people have
failed to give our young people
the kind of stuff they need to
light the fire in their belly. Al 1
2004 election, especially from
those Democrats who would
like to succeed Bush as presi-
dent and thus need to win over
a Democratic Party base that
strongly favors affirmative ac-
tion.
Indeed, administration offi-
cials emphasized that Bush was
addressing only the Michigan
case and not making a sweep-
ing statement about whether
other affirmative action pro-
grams are constitutional.
Affirmative action has had an
uneasy place in American poli-
tics since President Richard
Nixon implemented the "Phila-
delphia Order" in 1969 that in-
cluded goals and timetables for
they said was Saddam's lack of
cooperation.
They said that when weapons
inspectors update the U.N. Se-
curity Council Jan. 27, the U.N.
and the administration will have
to judge whether Iraq's coop-
eration is sufficient to avert
war.
Meanwhile, Rumsfeld and
Powell endorsed a notion re-
portedly being floated by the
Saudis and others that Saddam
should consider seeking asylum
for himself, his family and top
Iraqi officials in another coun-

Rumsfeld told ABC that al-
though he is neither in the White
House nor the Justice Depart-
ment, he "would recommend
that some provision be made so
that the senior leadership in that
country and their families could
be provided haven in some oth-
er country. And I think that that
would be a fair trade to avoid a

travels across the country de-

a half-century ago. He has
spearheaded economic agree-
ments with Shoney's Restau-
rant and the Publix grocery
chain, and he instituted a gun
buy-back program that has tak-
en more than 20,000 guns off
including minorities in federal
contract awards. Now Presi-
dent Bush has staked out his
clearest position to date by la-
beling affirmative action pro-
grams at Michigan unconstitu-
tional because they include
race-based quotas.
Affirmative action is a nu-
anced issue, and the level of
support for it often depends on
how it is defined.
If an affirmative action pro-
gram is seen as imposing nu-
merical quotas, an overwhelm-
ingly majority of Americans

tions have been developed to
facilitate parking and smooth
movement of traffic at Mercy-
hurst College, including the
McAuley Division Complex
and the North East campus.
They are enforced by Police
and Safety personnel and are
based on meeting the follow-
ing objectives:
1. To provide for the most
efficient use of available park-
ing spaces and the orderly flow
of traffic at all times.
2. To ensure fairness to all
members of the Mercyhurst
College community by desig-
nating parking lots at various
campus locations that provides
access to parking and allows
rapid campus ingress and
egress.
3. To fairly and consistently
enforce the rules and regula-
tions for all members of the
Mercyhurst College communi-
ty, and to make everyone aware
that traffic and parking controls
must be a concern to all of us
who live, study and/or work on
campus.
Registration ofa vehicle does
not guarantee a parking space,
but only permits the holder of
a permit to park on the private
property ofthe col lege in avail-
able spaces. The permit assists
Police and Safety in determin-
ing vehicle ownership, in case
of emergency.
Unregistered vehicles are
treated as a visitor's vehicle
until the owner is determined
to be a member of the Mercy-
hurst College community. Iden-
tification of vehicles on cam-
pus is a serious concern of the

The Rape Crisis Center has a
main office and five satellite
offices in the county to make
services accessible to all peo-
ple in need. The center provides
services to over 1600 individu-
als every year, including many
children and adults who were
abused as children.
The agency provides services
in sexual violence. Examples
include indecent exposure, sex-
ual harassment, spousal rape,
rape and attempted rape and
sexual assault of children.
Mercyhurst College commu-
nity benefits from the services

rent vehicle registration sticker.
Failure to park in the assigned
areas, or parking in restricted

assigned to that vehicle will re-
sult in a fine, vehicle booting,
or towing at the owner's ex-
pense. This policy applies to all
members of the college com-
munity.
Anyone who is cited for a
parking violation has 72 hours
from the date ofthe violation to
file an appeal or pay the amount
of the fine at the Police and
Safety Department. Failure to
do so will result in forfeiture of
any right to appeal, under all
circumstances. After 30 days
the amount of the fine will be
charged to the student's ac-
count. The Personnel Depart-
ment will handle the payment of
fines for staff, faculty and ad-
ministration after 30 days have
elapsed.

some thoughts on teaching at
the college level.
Q. How did you end up
teaching philosophy?
A. Well, I first got interest-
ed in philosophy in college, and
I actually got interested in it
through psychology.
When I studied psychology,
i t was the first time I realized
that what we think and how
we act and what we believe
is- it feels like it's just ours,
but actually we've learned it,
we've been taught it.
And so I started realizing
that maybe there were some
things that I thought, that I
believed, that were worthy of
question.
So philosophy kind of
helped me do that, to ask ques-
tions about things that I'd sort
of taken for granted all my

thing, and so 1 did a master's
degree in philosophy and a

Diversity 101 held its third
annual Coat Drive this year.
The Coat Drive is a project
that encourages students and
faculty to donate coats as well
as sweaters, scarves, gloves,
mittens, and even toys and
books to those less fortunate.
Boxes were located all
around campus in main
buildings like Zurn and the
Student Union and in
residence dorms.

benefited the Erie Saint Martin
Center which is located on
Seventeenth and Parade.
The Erie Saint Martin
Center washes the coats, and
collects other donations and
supplies them to those in need
around the Erie community.
One of the members of
Diversity 101 and also an
organizer of the Coat Drive,

have a pretty good turnout
from Mercyhurst. This year
we averaged around 100 coats
and that doesn't include the
sweaters, or gloves."

I have not been seen among
these pages for quite some
time, and yet now I feel that I
can no longer remain quiet.
This sudden change of heart
has come about due to one
friend who reminded me of
Plato's "allegory of the cave,"
and the responsibility that is
implied in it. This responsibil-
ity is that everyone is morally
responsible for trying to help
each other attain a higher lev-
el of thought. This is not
meant to imply any sense of
superiority on my part, but
instead to present a view that
will hopefully force you to
think about my claims and
compare them to your own.
It is a dead campus; intellec-
tual conversation is rare to be
found.
Maybe I just don't hear it,
but if I don't, then that means
others don't either. So my
main goal, week in and week
out, is to present my view on
some subject and hopefully
elicit some response.

that think I am an idiot and

This is the most influential

It's hard to watch 'Chicago'
and not scrutinize over every
frame to see if director Rob
Marshall's musical deserves all
the buzz and praise.
Surprisingly, it does - and
then some.
*Chicago' is the type of en-
tertainment that embraces the
era of movie musical, a time
when "sexy" meant a serenade
atop a piano and cabarets were
speakeasies for the soul. The
movie erupts with a furious,
inspired excitement that never
steers into self-parody or sat-
ire.
If 'Moulin Rouge' brought
back the great movie musical,
'Chicago,' in all its neon glitz,
proves that its here to stay.
/ The Plot: Screenwriter Bill
('Gods and Monsters') Condon
stays true to the Broadway
source material, opening with
the number "All That Jazz" to
set the stage for Roxie Hart
(Renee Zellweger) and Velma
Kelly's story. The former is a
background starlet wanting the
spot light, the latter being one
that has it but faces jail time for
killing her-sister/former duet
partner. Roxie bel ieves an illicit
affair with her furniture sales-

The opening lines of bestsell-
er-list darling James Patter-
son's latest forensic thriller
thrust the reader headfirst into
a spiral of madness, obsession
and communion with the depths
of human malignance. * There are no top 40 hits blast-

er, forensic psycholopgist De-
tective Alex Cross, who was
portrayed by Morgan Freeman
in two screenplays adapted
from earlier novels, is chal-
lenged by death-artist the Mas-

The stakes are raised from
the get-go, as the vicious sex-
ual assault and murder of
Cross' partner (both profes-
sional and private) opens the
book, followed by a savage
animal attack in the parks of San
Francisco. Never to be outdone
by, well, himself, Patterson
pushes the palate of his devot-
ed readers more to the left, in-
troducing a supernatural ele-
ment once more. 1999's When
the Wind Blows features a gift-
ed young girl with wings, and
the author pulled it off then; he
does once more with \ lolets

Wrestlers upset # 14 W e s t Liberty State

This week was a good week
for the Mercyhurst wrestlers as
they took a pair of contests
from fourteenth ranked West
Liberty State and Shippens-
burg. t
Wednesday, Jan. 15, the Lak-
ers upset the fourteenth ranked
team in the country, defeating
West Liberty State 24-21. The
Lakers jumped out to an early
lead after the first matches.
In the 125-pouhd weight
class sophomore Ricky'Ran-
dazzo won by forfeit.
The next match saw 133-
pound sophomore Mike Shu-
mac of Mercyhurst win by de-
cision over Dan Kosek, 3-
2. Freshman Will Tedder then
registered a pin in the 141
pound division to push the Lak-
ers lead to 15-0.
West Liberty State would not
back down though and took the
next four matches and gained
an 18-15 advantage over the
Lakers with only three match-

Junior Steve Warzala has re-
cently been named head of
sports activities for the Mercy-
hurst campus radio station.
Previously a commentator for
men's and women's hockey,
Warzala will continue to broad-
cast the games while also as-
suming other small, manage-
ment-based responsibilities.
"1 do mostly simple stuff to
make sure the radio runs prop-

as the next step in his college
