personajes actuales o situaciones actuales

Barranquilla Carnival

What is the carnival?

It is a folkloric and cultural event celebrated in Colombia. The Carnival is held annually in
late February or early March.

How well known is it?

It is currently considered the second most varied carnival in the world and one of the best
known internationally.

Does it have any awards?

Thanks to its great cultural diversity, it has been awarded the recognition of National
Heritage and Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, this title was
given to it by UNESCO on November 7, 2003.

What happens in the Carnival?

In this carnival a variety of cultures and folklore of the Colombian Caribbean Coast are
shown, mainly music and dance.

Also in this festivity there are many disguises of all kinds: of animals both native and foreign,
also disguises of black Africans, big-headed people, superheroes and in general all kinds of
disguises that can be made.

In this celebration there are certain traditional costumes, such as the Marimonda, the
Garabato, the Congo and the Monocuco.

What is the history of this festivity?

Actually, this festivity is derived from different celebrations that were very common in the
neighboring land of Barranquilla, Cartagena de Indias.

These celebrations were brought by the Europeans to the New World, and, thanks to this,
they managed to flourish the tradition of carnival among carabalies (Africans from Calabar),
Mandingas (West Africans) and black mines that existed in Cartagena.

This tradition of performing carnivals was shared all over Colombia by the twentieth century,
when the city of Barranquilla, lived in full economic boom and grew demographically, the
reason why the Carnival of Barranquilla was much bigger in this place than elsewhere is
because Barranquilla lacked a colonial past and because the religious festivals were not the
most performed in that region.

What is performed in the pre-Carnival?

Before starting the carnival as such, there are some pre carnival events that officially are the
Reading of the Bando, the Taking of the City, the Coronation of the Queen, the Children's
Carnival and the most important, La Guacherna, this is a night parade that takes place on
the penultimate Friday before the Saturday of the carnival.

Reading of the Bando

With this celebration, the pre-carnival festivities officially begin. This celebration takes place
in the Plaza de la Paz where the mayor of the city hands over the keys of the city to the
Carnival Queen, this is to hand over the power during the carnival season.

On this day the party is given free reign and is read by the Carnival Queen, in this document
is what can and cannot be done in the Carnival and for those attending the Carnival.

Coronation of the Queen

This takes place on the Thursday before the Battle of Flowers, on this day the queen of the
previous Carnival puts the crown on the current queen, this event takes place in the Romelio
Martinez stadium, although there is some controversy because the dress of the queen must
be purchased by family members, making it difficult for people from the popular areas can
apply to be queens of Carnival.

LGBT Carnival or Guacherna Gay

In this event, many members of the LGBT community participate, in this celebration it is
estimated that more than twelve thousand people from this community parade.

Children's Carnival
It is a parade directed towards children, where school and community parades participate,
and the children's Kings are selected, it is customary in this celebration to see mini-carriages
for children, in this parade there are also costumes and music.

Guacherna
This is a night parade and the most important event of the pre carnivals, in this parade
participate folkloric groups, cumbiambas, drums and costumes of candlelight and colored
flowers.
The origin of its being the most important is because, at the beginning of the twentieth
century, the guache, a percussion instrument, was used to call the others and prepare the
dances.

What are the events that take place during carnival?

The events that take place before the beginning of the carnival or before the beginning of
Lent, have a duration of four days, now most of the habitants of Barranquilla and several
foreigners are totally devoted to the collective enjoyment.

Saturday of Carnival / Battle of the flowers

This is the most awaited day, it is a great parade of floats led by the Carnival Queen,
followed by a large folkloric group, many people in costume, cumbiamvbas and comparsas
that were winners of the previous carnival.

This parade is the oldest that takes place in this carnival. Originally it was a walk along the
camellón abello, on this day people make a fight where flowers, streamers and confetti are
thrown to then consolidate in the Emiliano Vengoechea theater.

Carnival Sunday / Great parade of Tradition and folklore.

This takes place in the great parade of tradition and folklore, on this day only traditional
folklore groups, cumbiambas and comparsas of tradition are presented.

In this parade the traditional dance and music that could not be appreciated due to the
sound of the Battle of the Flowers is shown.

Normally always on this day the most seen dances are the popular dances such as the
Caimán Cienaguero or the negritas puloy and on the other hand the traditional dances such
as the diablos arlequines.

The music that accompanies these dances are the cumbias, chandés and fandangos.

Carnival Monday / Grand parade of Comparsas and festival of orchestras and accordions.
It is celebrated on Via 40, where many floats parade, as well as the mixture of many
traditional folkloric elements with tendencies to be reinvented. Also here a lot of music and a
variety of new costumes are presented.

Thanks to this mix of traditional choreographies from Colombia, local barranquillas and from
all over the world, this day mixes many forms of music and dance from all over the world
such as samba, salsa, reggaeton, champeta and electronic music.

This day is also celebrated as the festival of orchestras and accordions, where a great
variety of musical categories and dances participate, and depending on the winner, the
coveted prize of the Congo de Oro is given.

Shrove Tuesday / Burial of Joselito Carnaval

This is the last day of the festivity, where the closing of the festivity takes place, the burial of
Joselito Carnaval. Joselito Carnaval is the representation of the joy of Carnival.
On this day many neighborhoods of the city perform burials of Joselito and it is said that this
character is resurrected on the Saturday of the beginning of Carnival and dies the last day
tired and enguayabado (this phase means drunk) and then resurrected again the next
Carnival year.

People come out of their houses in tears for the death of Joselito.

The reason for this day is a way to represent the end of different carnivals in Ibero-America.

Already on the night of this day, ¨Letanías¨ are celebrated, which are mocking prayers to
current characters or current situations.

The following day, Ash Wednesday begins and Lent starts.
