PRECEDENT STUDY 5

ARCHITECTURE 2202
Architectural Design II
Spring Semester 2010

A. PRECEDENT STUDY
ANALYSIS:
You should find as much information on your assigned building as possible. Some projects
have more information available than others. Your assignment is to provide an in-depth
analysis of the project from the information you are able to obtain.

Analysis should include:

Concept analysis (building concept and/or architect concepts)
Circulation Analysis
Spatial Organization analysis (public vs. private, etc.)
Building section analysis
Use of Natural Light
Any other analysis relevant and specific to your project

You should communicate your analysis of the project to the class through drawings and
diagrams.

PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS
Your presentation should include both drawings and a model.

Model:
You will create a model to help communicated the design ideas of the project. Your model can
be of the entire structure, or of a portion of the project that is of high significance. Models
should communicate the important ideas and concepts of your precedent. You must build a
portion of your precedent study by hand, but you may supplement the presentation with
computer graphics and 3d models.

Drawings:
Drawings should include floor plans, building sections, analysis diagrams and sketches of the
precedent. Most importantly, your drawings should communicate the depth of your analysis of
the project. Drawings should be composed on no more than (1) 24”x30” board.

Choose drawings and models that best represent the ideas and concepts of the precedent
project and precedent architect.

Evaluation:
You will be evaluated on the depth of your analysis and the effectiveness of your presentation.
Presentations should communicate your precedent to the class through drawings, models and
analysis diagrams. Your presentation should also communicate links and strategies from your
precedent that could be effective and relevant for your own projects.

B. SUSTAINABLE RESEARCH
All of the projects this semester will have an underlying theme of sustainable design. In
preparation for this, each group will be required to do research on a sustainable / green building
topic and present their findings to the class.

Each group will create a 24” x 30” storyboard illustrating their research on an assigned
sustainable topic. The board should be a visual and graphic presentation illustrating the
concepts of the research topic. Boards must include drawings and diagrams created by your
team. Boards may include images, text, precedent studies and a 3 dimensional model if
desired. Each board should also contain a bibliography of sources consulted. You will be
evaluated on the thoroughness of your research and on the composition and effectiveness of
the presentation.

Consider the following questions while conducting your research:

 Why is this topic important?
 What are the benefits of this topic to an architect?
 How can I use these techniques in my own designs?
 Are their any precedents which illustrate clearly these concepts?
